I managed to get  couple more scarves done this week. I forgot to get shots of them before I wet them but here they are finished and drying. I lightened them so they are more the colour they will be when they are dry. I had to be fast taking the pictures, the breeze was blowing again and my son had to play interference with the turkeys who were too interested in what I was doing.

I started another with the last of the scarf blanks I dyed. I will have to dye some more. I need to add some purple to the inventory.

The other thing I did this week was skein my hand spun yarn so I could get it washed. I want to sell it in small skeins for people to use as embellishments in wet felting.

I have to decide how much yarn to put in a small skein. I measured the yarn I put on the green scarf, The scarf starts out just shy of 8 ft. long. I was surprise how much yarn I used; 404 inches/ 33.66 feet/11.2 yards Or 1026.16cm/10.26 metres. So I think maybe 12yds/11meters in a skein. Some will be shorter because there isn’t 12 yard total but the length will be on each label. What do you think? Pricing it is the next problem.

This week I finished the hat I showed you just started last time and of course the matching scarf is now dry. I really like how the way the texture of the scrunched up silk pieces  turned out.

I used some of the dyed silk I showed you last time to make some scarves this week. I did the orange one with silk scrunched up on it as well and some yarns meandering over everything.

The next 2 are still wet. I finished them last night, just before writing this. I tried to lighten them up so you get a better idea of what they are like.

I seem to be in a sparkly mood. Everything has a synthetic sparkly yarn on it. I hope other people will like them too. I am going to have to do a proper inventory to see what I need for the fall shows.

I finished up some textured felt this week. First the pieces I started last week to cut up. They are the wet ones at the bottom of the post. https://feltingandfiberstudio.com/2016/07/26/making-some-progress-and-free-give-away-reminder/

They turned out great. I am sorry for the quality of the pictures but the pictures are taken in full sunlight as that is all I had.

This one has so much depth. The yarn is quite sparkly. I am surprised It didn’t flash back more in the sun.

I liked this so much I decided to make a scarf and matching hat.

The scarf is now drying.

Lastly I did some silk dying so I can make some scarves for the fall shows.

The green one on the left will probably get over dyed. It is two shades of green but they are to close. I will probably use some navy blue on part or it.

I can’t believe the summer is half over. I still have so much to do. How are you doing with your summer felting plans?

I’ve made a couple of camouflage inspired pieces lately. I think it must be one of my favourite ‘themes’, I know I’ve made a camouflage hat and drawstring bag, a shoulder bag, a notebook cover or two, and a felt cuff and coin pouches (I still use that one in the photo, 4 years on). Maybe it’s because I really enjoy doing  felt layouts, choosing all the colours of wool and embellishment pieces. This first one uses some strips from a camouflage patterned silk scarf:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI got a small kids’ weaving loom not so long ago, and finally had a go recently. One of the things I tried was pencil roving waste from World of Wool. I’ve tried weaving and felting with it before, but had to do it ‘freestyle’, this was the post about it: https://feltingandfiberstudio.com/2015/06/08/pencil-roving-mats/  I think it was a bit ‘closer’ using the loom, and I left the edges longer, but it looked pretty much the same really:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI really like the pencil roving waste, it knits nicely and felts nicely. I’d use it more if I had more colour variety.

Now that I have the multi nuno sample pieces I made, and have some reference for how a lot of my fabric pieces felt, I thought I’d sort out some pieces to use. I’ve got quite a few pieces cut or torn, in various sizes and made a start with a piece of a woven pink scarf I got from a charity shop. I always put far too much effort into choosing the colours to go with the fabrics, you can’t tell, but the felt under the scarf actually has 3 different shades of pink, plus a few wisps of turquoisey blue:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI thought the pink scarf and this next piece would make nice coin purses, though I’ll probably use just a plain piece of felt for the inside section of the coin purse. This is a piece from a spearminty peacock scarf:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI never did get around to making new fimo buttons, so I might have to look in my button box. I like how this flower turned out, I tried hard to get it thin and also wispy on the edges:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis one was made using a batt I blended from the Botany lap waste I mentioned last time, I blended the pale pinky lilac with some of the grey, it made a kind of pale lilac/lavender. I added a few wisps of lemon and tussah silk.

You may remember that I am getting a new drop spindle http://feltingandfiberstudio.com/2015/12/23/i-am-getting-a-new-drop-spindle/ I couldn’t  decided  on what colours I wanted so I decided to make several pieces of nuno felt with silk throwsters waist on the felt side. If you don’t know, throwsters waste is a waste by-product of reeling silk. It is all sorts of very short silk fibers and threads. It dyes up lovely.

I picked out some small scraps of silk I had and then some wool and throwsters waste. As usual when I start felting I forget to take pictures. This one is laying out the wool on top of the silk.

Here they are finished. Both sides of each. Forgive the quality of the photos. The only camera I have is my iPhone.

sample 2a sample 2b I normally like purple and orange together but this one ins not doing anything for me.

sample 3a sample 3b I go back and forth on this one. I am not sure I like the bright colours on the wool side.

I thought I’d get my sewing machine out this week and make a few things with offcuts, samples and test pieces. The first thing I made was a large notebook/diary cover. The main part only took a couple of hours, but then all the little fiddly bits, straps, flaps, attaching them and sleeves etc all seemed to take about another 4 once it was all added up. I got through quite a few cd albums making it anyway! This is the front with the clip closed:

I am still working toward my up coming show. I have been making some short ruffle scarves that should work well inside winter coats. I use a template to get the proportions right and have them shrink to the right size. You can see the template below the scarf below and you can see how much it shrank.

Here are the 3 I have done. In the first one you can see the ruffles and then all rolled up looking like hand weights.

I also taught a slipper class last week end. I couldn’t find my sample s so had to quickly make a couple. I made little boots for my grandson. her they are stuffed with plastic and covered in some pantyhose ready for the washer and the finished pair.

I tried the heart shaped template. It was on the Forum but I can’t find it right now.

They are not fulled enough but I needed to stop to have them dry in time. It was good really because they could feel the difference between Fynn’s fulled slippers and mine. I will stuff them and put them through the washer. I am sorry to say I forgot to take any pictures at the class.

And lastly another inspiration picture. The leaves are now starting to fall so now the ground and the trees  match and it is time to play in the leaves.

I had a fairly productive week I made 4 cup cozies.  They need their buttons and elastic loops but I should get that done this week. I need to sort out if they are narrow enough to go through the handle on a coffee mug. If they don’t fit I will make them for travel mugs without handles.

Here are some close up pictures. The top two have throwsters silk waste. The bottom left is a silk scarf and the right is cotton cheesecloth.

I also got the inklette loom warped to make a strap.

The weaving is not great but it is getting better as I go.

Lastly I had t very nice ladies to may studio to learn to make nuno felt scarves. As usual I was busy with the students and forgot to take pictures until the end.

I blended some fine 18.5 micron Merino recently to make a scarf for my Dad for Christmas. I used what was left of a blue/purple/green blend I’d made for another scarf, and ran it through the drum carder with more green. This is one of the batts:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI had to go into town on Wednesday, so I wanted to try out a scarf I’d bought from a shop there when I last went, so I could see if it was worth getting more, since they were only £1 each. The batts I made for my Dad’s scarf were the perfect colour so I ‘borrowed’ some of them to try a piece out:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThose of you who go on the forum will have seen this piece, it’s a sample I made using some georgette fabric I got from Abakhan last time:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI knew from other similar fabrics I’ve used that it would only attach loosely, the weave isn’t particularly open, and one part of the bottom edge didn’t attach at all. Even though I was fairly certain it would felt like it did, I like to just try a sample on top without wisps etc at first to get a good idea of how it felts, sometimes fabrics like this attach well around the edge if they are quite frayed.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI haven’t decided what I’ll use it for yet, but I did make it big enough to make a coin/zipper purse out of, I thought that might look nice.
