Hand Stitching

Hand Stitching

Adding hand stitching to a felted surface is quite simple. You don’t need to be an accomplished embroiderer to add hand stitching and the needle moves very easily through felt. There are many different types of threads that can be used and depending on the look you want to achieve, consider whether a shiny thread such as silk or a thread with a matte finish such as lace weight wool would provide the most attractive alternative.

The type of needle to use will be determined by the thickness of the thread that you choose. A good choice for needles is to get a mixed pack of embroidery needles so that you’ll have a variety of options. If you have trouble threading the needle, choose a needle with a bigger eye.

Simple stitches such as back stitch, blanket stitch, seed stitch or chain stitch can make beautiful additions to your felt masterpiece. Massing stitches together such as seed stitch or French knots can add needed color or texture to your felt. Even just using long straight stitches to add line to your composition might provide just that detail that is needed to complete your design.
