New Felted Hat in Progress

New Felted Hat in Progress

If you are on the forum you may have seen the resist for this hat in the daily dose of fiber thread for this month. daily-dose-fiber-october-2017

I used wool in 3 layers because I wanted most of the shrinkage to be around. I wanted some height to play with.

After I cut it open I worked the edges and the rest as normal but near the end I also cut the top part of the right hand curled brim. I worked those edges to get them sealed. the rinsed all the soap out and let it dry because I was out of time for a few days. Today I finally got some time to work on it some more. I wet it all down and popped it onto a regular hat block and twisted the two long cut pieces around each other and then curled the ends around some tiny “pool noodles” I over exposed the picture trying to get the twist to show but the wool is just to dark.

Then I put in two sloped folds and pinned them with the little double pins. I found them after spending half an hour trying to fined my T pins that I gave up on finding. I am sure they are somewhere that was logical at the time but isn’t any more. I am not sure how that happens but it happens to me all the time.

It is now drying. The hat is sitting on another flat toped hat block and the pop bottle is holding the rim up so it dries in a better position.

When it is all dry I will take a picture of it again and show it to you.

Have you been working on any new designs lately?

Early Celtic Art Challenge Project Begun

Early Celtic Art Challenge Project Begun

I finally had a little time to begin working on a piece for the 2nd Quarter Challenge. Ann chose the Early Celtic art period and so I followed the links that she gave in her post. I didn’t realize there was a difference in later Celtic art (which is what I always think of when I think Celtic) and earlier art. I have been wanting to make a hat for a while now. Not sure why but I haven’t made one in quite a while so I decided I would research hats from the same time period and add an early Celtic design to the hat.

I found my design on the Ancient Celts site that Ann recommended. Then I researched hats in that same time period and found the Pileus. Now I am not sure that Celts wore this type of hat but it is from the same time period and was made from felt. It actually was worn by freed slaves and is conically shaped with no brim.

So here is a printout of the design, I used the bottom one. And then I enlarged it to fit the brim of my hat. I drew it by hand and then used permanent pen so I could see which line I was to follow.

As you can see from this closeup, I changed my lines as I went along, drawing with pencil first.

Here it is after cutting it out. And again, I didn’t follow all my pen lines. If I felt that I had drawn an area so it was too skinny, I cut to give it more width.

Here is the resist I am using for the hat and the design where it will go along the brim.

I then pinned it down to prefelt so I could cut it out.

I folded the prefelt into two layers so that I would have prefelt pattern all the way around the brim on the front and the back of the resist.

And here it is after I cut it all out. These hats traditionally are white with minimal decoration. So I am going to make the hat white too. So it will be white on white. If the pattern doesn’t show up well enough, I will do either hand stitching or machine stitching to outline the Celtic pattern.

The plan is to make the hat to prefelt stage and then stitch the cutout prefelt on to the hat to hold it in place better. I don’t want to have to worry about the pattern shifting around when I am felting it. So next time, I will hopefully show you the finished hat.

Spiked Hat Class

Spiked Hat Class

Last month I taught the spiked hat class at the Ottawa Valley Weavers’ and Spinners’ Guild. I had 6 wonderful students. Some did hats with brims and some did hats with folded up bottoms. As usual I did not take as many pictures as I should.

Notice how she is putting dots on the inside of the hat so they will show later on the outside.

And lastly the finished hats. one person did not get the spiral for the spike to warp around in finished in class. I offered to stay but she said she would do it at home. I would like to see a finished picture of it. the paten around it was quite nice.

group-shot group-shot-2

Everyone liked making their spikes and learning how to attach them and then shaping in the swirl for it to lay in.  The spick does need to be tacked in place so it stays put or when you bend over it falls out. All in all a good class.

Hat Classwork

Hat Classwork

In September, I took Teri Berry’s first Concertina Hat Class online.  Unfortunately, I didn’t finish on time due to taking another class and travel.  But I’ve completed the first two hats.

Here is the Concertina hat with some silk embellishment:

I probably could have added a couple more folds, but I kind of like it the way it is.  Of course, my favorite colors.

The next hat was the Snail Hat which was a bit more complicated, but fun to make.

Drying on the hat block:

Finally dry and shaved.

Teri is offering the class again November 4.  I highly recommend it.  There was a lot of creativity, sharing of ideas and fun.  For more information or to register:

As you can see no two hats were alike.  Sign up and have some fun!

The Finished Hat and Some Scarves.

The Finished Hat and Some Scarves.

I finished the Hat I was teasing you with last week. Now you know what I did with the spike.

I also finished this scarf. It has a antique colour wool base and then a thin layer of mixed brown on top and then some brass/coppery silk hankies stretched over it all.

I was thinking it might appeal to men as well as women.

I’ve started 2 more scarves. You will get to see them next time. I may get one more done but then it’s time to start ironing and tagging everything for the coming weekend. the show info is here http://mvtm.ca/fibrefest-2016/   It is always a bigger job than I think it will be.

More, Getting Ready for My Upcoming Show.

More, Getting Ready for My Upcoming Show.

My show is coming up fast. It is September 10-11. in Almonte Ontario.  http://mvtm.ca/fibrefest-2016/ I dyed some more silk for scarves. Concentrating on purples.

4 slik scarves 3 silk scarves

I did get 2 scarves finished. The orange one with the yarn on it that I showed you before wetting last time. It needs ironing but I really like how it turned out. The finer yarn shows up much more in person.

This one has silk top on it and silk throwsters waste but I couldn’t get the throwsters waste to show up in the pictures.

I also started a hat that will go well with one of the scarves or by it self.

It’s cut open now and had another roll, then my knees wanted a rest form standing. I will show you the finished hat next time.

Hat ready to felt.

I want to get several more scarves done and a couple of hats and well a ton of other stuff I probably don’t have time to do. Oh well, I wouldn’t want to do anything different this time. LOL

A Hat and Some More Nuno Scarves Finished

A Hat and Some More Nuno Scarves Finished

This week I finished the hat I showed you just started last time and of course the matching scarf is now dry. I really like how the way the texture of the scrunched up silk pieces  turned out.

hat and scarf

You will have to forgive my pictures as I was taking them quickly because I was cuddling my granddaughter while my daughter was getting her brother to bed and forgot it was my turn to post

I used some of the dyed silk I showed you last time to make some scarves this week. I did the orange one with silk scrunched up on it as well and some yarns meandering over everything.

orange scarf 2 orange scarf

The next 2 are still wet. I finished them last night, just before writing this. I tried to lighten them up so you get a better idea of what they are like.

green scarf blue scarf

I seem to be in a sparkly mood. Everything has a synthetic sparkly yarn on it. I hope other people will like them too. I am going to have to do a proper inventory to see what I need for the fall shows.

Textured Felt and Some Dyeing

Textured Felt and Some Dyeing

I finished up some textured felt this week. First the pieces I started last week to cut up. They are the wet ones at the bottom of the post. https://feltingandfiberstudio.com/2016/07/26/making-some-progress-and-free-give-away-reminder/

They turned out great. I am sorry for the quality of the pictures but the pictures are taken in full sunlight as that is all I had.

This one has so much depth. The yarn is quite sparkly. I am surprised It didn’t flash back more in the sun.

I liked this so much I decided to make a scarf and matching hat.

The scarf is now drying.

The hat is just ready to cut open. I will show you it finished next time.

Lastly I did some silk dying so I can make some scarves for the fall shows.

orange pink silk blanks

The green one on the left will probably get over dyed. It is two shades of green but they are to close. I will probably use some navy blue on part or it.

I can’t believe the summer is half over. I still have so much to do. How are you doing with your summer felting plans?

Felt Hat and Flower Delivered.

Felt Hat and Flower Delivered.

I did finally got the commissioned hat and flower finished. I decided to make two hats so she had a choice. One I put silk hankies on the other I left plane.

This one has the silk hankies. It was hard to get a good shot that showed the silk.

And the plane one

pink hat 1

I thought the plane one was …. to plane, so I added a silk band. I twisted the long piece of silk and then folded it in half and let it wrap around itself like yarn. You can see it in the final picture below.  After trying both on and looking in the mirror Rebecca chose the plane one and the lily flower. She really is a hat person they both looked great on her.

Here is a picture of all the finished flowers.

I needle felted the layers together and then the needled the leaves into position. Then using invisible nylon thread I added the large safety pin. I sew through all the layers of felt in the center just to be sure it all stays together.

An Order for a Hat

An Order for a Hat

I had a lovely meeting with Rebecca last night.  Rebecca has  several of my hats and wanted to order a new one. She wore a purple hat I made so I would recognise her.

Rebecca in purple hat.

She wanted a hat similar in shape as another one she has in turquoise.  She brought it along and I took some pictures so I wouldn’t have to rely on my memory.

She also ordered another flower in orange to go with it.

And of course I had her model it as well.

Rebecca in turquise hat

She is a very good hat model.  This is the colour she chose for her new hat.

She said I can add things to it if I want to. So now I will have to have a little think. I will have to find my dye pot too . I have no orange wool for the flower.
