Ruffle Scarves

Ruffle Scarves

This week I have been working on some short ruffle scarves. They go just around your neck. I need to build my inventory for the fall shows.

I lay them out in the usual ruffle configuration. I have a template under my plastic so they are all the same and one end isn’t smaller than the other. This is the class I will be teaching at Almonte fibrefest this September. http://almontefibrefest.ca/workshop/ruffle-scarf/

I do not have many in prosses pictures. I got into a groove and forgot to take them.  This is what thy look like finished but wet. These ones are nuno felt as well. The purple and turquoise one is an upcycled scarf someone gave me. I wasn’t sure how it would work but it felted right in.

and dry,

I think they look like dumbbells when you roll them up for storage. I hope people like them. They are nice inside your coat. You can leave them up like a tall collar to keep the wind out or fold them down over you coat. Either way the are warm and fashionable. I almost forgot to tell you I will put a button on each one.

Nuno Felt Scarf Class

Nuno Felt Scarf Class

I had another delightful day teaching some ladies to make nuno felt scarves. I made a slide show of the scarves. For some reason I only got one shot of the last one.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

And finally a group shot of the ladies and their scarves all finished.

It was a fun day I love seeing how different they all turn out.

One of the students, Renee sent me a couple of pictures she sent so  ma pop ing them in now.

Nuno Felt Scarf Class

Nuno Felt Scarf Class

A few weeks ago I taught a nuno felt scarf class. As usual I had great students and we had a lot of fun.

I have grouped the 4 scarves into galleries so you can see the progressions.

These first 2 the students opted to leave a lot of the silk showing. This style always floats nicely when finished. The silk sort of puffs up when it is caught by the air.

The next 2 used more wool. This first one reminds me of water and sailing.

This last one has the most wool. When talking about design I was talking about how people tend to work along the scarf  like a landscape forgetting that the ends will hand down and if you want your flowers the right way up you need to make them the other direction. I think this one turned out especial well.

All in all I think they all turned out fantastic. People know what they are coming to do but they are always so surprised and pleased when it actually works. It is one of the best parts of teaching.

More nuno felt class.

More nuno felt class.

I taught nuno felt scarves again on Sunday. I wasn’t as good with taking pictures but I will show you what I have.

This lady Had to leave early. She was going to finish at home. I am hoping to get her to send me a picture of it finished and I will insert it if when does.

I didn’t get one of this one finished either

I can’t remember if  she added more or not. She had to leave before she finished but she said she will send me pictures today. I will insert them when she does.

This is the last one. We stretched 2 white silk hankies very thinly over the whole thing.  The last picture is of the scarf dry.

That’s if for classes for me until mid January. Now I will have to do some felting of my own to show you.

The Finished Hat and Some Scarves.

The Finished Hat and Some Scarves.

I finished the Hat I was teasing you with last week. Now you know what I did with the spike.

I also finished this scarf. It has a antique colour wool base and then a thin layer of mixed brown on top and then some brass/coppery silk hankies stretched over it all.

I was thinking it might appeal to men as well as women.

I’ve started 2 more scarves. You will get to see them next time. I may get one more done but then it’s time to start ironing and tagging everything for the coming weekend. the show info is here http://mvtm.ca/fibrefest-2016/   It is always a bigger job than I think it will be.

More, Getting Ready for My Upcoming Show.

More, Getting Ready for My Upcoming Show.

My show is coming up fast. It is September 10-11. in Almonte Ontario.  http://mvtm.ca/fibrefest-2016/ I dyed some more silk for scarves. Concentrating on purples.

4 slik scarves 3 silk scarves

I did get 2 scarves finished. The orange one with the yarn on it that I showed you before wetting last time. It needs ironing but I really like how it turned out. The finer yarn shows up much more in person.

This one has silk top on it and silk throwsters waste but I couldn’t get the throwsters waste to show up in the pictures.

I also started a hat that will go well with one of the scarves or by it self.

It’s cut open now and had another roll, then my knees wanted a rest form standing. I will show you the finished hat next time.

Hat ready to felt.

I want to get several more scarves done and a couple of hats and well a ton of other stuff I probably don’t have time to do. Oh well, I wouldn’t want to do anything different this time. LOL

Nuno Felt Scarves and Some Yarn

Nuno Felt Scarves and Some Yarn

I managed to get  couple more scarves done this week. I forgot to get shots of them before I wet them but here they are finished and drying. I lightened them so they are more the colour they will be when they are dry. I had to be fast taking the pictures, the breeze was blowing again and my son had to play interference with the turkeys who were too interested in what I was doing.

I started another with the last of the scarf blanks I dyed. I will have to dye some more. I need to add some purple to the inventory.

orange scarf start

The other thing I did this week was skein my hand spun yarn so I could get it washed. I want to sell it in small skeins for people to use as embellishments in wet felting.

Yarn washed and hanging

I have to decide how much yarn to put in a small skein. I measured the yarn I put on the green scarf, The scarf starts out just shy of 8 ft. long. I was surprise how much yarn I used; 404 inches/ 33.66 feet/11.2 yards Or 1026.16cm/10.26 metres. So I think maybe 12yds/11meters in a skein. Some will be shorter because there isn’t 12 yard total but the length will be on each label. What do you think? Pricing it is the next problem.

Textured Felt and Some Dyeing

Textured Felt and Some Dyeing

I finished up some textured felt this week. First the pieces I started last week to cut up. They are the wet ones at the bottom of the post. https://feltingandfiberstudio.com/2016/07/26/making-some-progress-and-free-give-away-reminder/

They turned out great. I am sorry for the quality of the pictures but the pictures are taken in full sunlight as that is all I had.

This one has so much depth. The yarn is quite sparkly. I am surprised It didn’t flash back more in the sun.

I liked this so much I decided to make a scarf and matching hat.

The scarf is now drying.

The hat is just ready to cut open. I will show you it finished next time.

Lastly I did some silk dying so I can make some scarves for the fall shows.

orange pink silk blanks

The green one on the left will probably get over dyed. It is two shades of green but they are to close. I will probably use some navy blue on part or it.

I can’t believe the summer is half over. I still have so much to do. How are you doing with your summer felting plans?

Making some progress and free give away reminder

Making some progress and free give away reminder

I want to remind everyone you only have a few days left to enter the free draw for a spot in Terri’s Concertina Hat Class. The last day to enter is July 28. Just follow the link. https://feltingandfiberstudio.com/2016/07/16/online-felted-concertina-hat-class-with-teri-berry-in-august/

I finished my triangle scarf this week.

There wasn’t that much shrinkage as it is very cobwebby on the wool side.

I finished the prefelt for the building on a Picture I am working on.

prefelt for picture.

I cut some circles to make little earbud pouches.  Sorry I can’t right now remember who had this great idea to use scrap piece for felt for this. I want to keep my square credit card reader in one.

I made 2 pieces specially to cut up.

I love the way the silk throwsters waist seems to hover on the felt even though it is well attached. The blue one isn’t firm enough so I will rewet it and full it some more.

I also started 2 more. I laid the wool out first. The first one I used on large piece of silk  on top . I added the roving so you could see the colour. I wanted something a little more “masculine”.

peice for cutting dry

The other one I want more texture from the silk so I had to wet the back ground so the silk would stay where and how I put it. I then added some synthetic yarn and put tiny amounts of wool to bridge it and hold it down.  I really like how it looks so I think I will make a scarf in the same design. It is very dark in the picture because it is wet.

So that’s been my week in felt.  I hope you have been able to play with some fibers too. Don’t forget to enter the draw for a free hat class.

Triangle Nuno Scarf

Triangle Nuno Scarf

I saw a Knit triangle Scarf that looked interesting and thought I could do that with nuno felt.

pfeilraupe01_medium

If you would like to knit it here is the link. It is available in several languages. http://alpis-farbenrausch.blogspot.ca/p/strickanleitunen.html

I wasn’t sure of the finished length but I was thinking about 6 feet.  I cut a piece of silk 4ft by 8 ft. and then cut that corner to corner to make 2 scarves.

I cut the slits first, inserting resists to make sure they holes stayed open.

triangle scarf 3

The first layer of wool was one of my own batts that I split in to thin layers.

triangle scarf 1

Then more colours, well shades of purple mostly

triangle scarf 4

Then I added some silk top and throwster’s waste. Mostly purples again and I used some turquoise for pop.

triangle scarf 5

6 feet seems to be the right length. I think you could do it a bit smaller if you wanted or if you are petite.

scarf 2 scarf1

All in all I am very pleased with it. I may iron the folds in to it but I haven’t decided yet. I will add a picture on the mannequin a little later. I don’t want you all to be waiting for the post, thinking I have forgotten about you.

Here is the scarf on the mannequin.
