Year End Review and Giveaway Winner

Year End Review and Giveaway Winner

I’m always surprised when I look back on the year and see I achieved more than I thought, even this year when I know I haven’t had the opportunity to make things as often as previous years. I’ve had quite a lot of changes this year, including an additional 2 people in our household, so I’ve had less space, and less time to make things. And, like I mentioned in a blog post not so long ago, production anxiety has made it difficult to just enjoy making things. Luckily, I have the Well Being centre sessions which help with having a nice space to be productive/creative in and the time set aside nearly every week to do it. I liked Ruth’s idea of splitting the year’s creations into two slide shows, so I’ve borrowed it! Here are some things I made in the first half:

The plan is for a couple of people at our house to move out before too long, and, I don’t want to count my chickens, but I’ve pretty much redesigned the spare room in my head to be my new studio! It’s a great room too, upstairs and facing South-ish, so it gets more ‘daylight’ than any of the other rooms at this time of year. I started working on a nuno workshop during the Summer, but just haven’t been able to get very far without space or light for taking photos and video, so hopefully, I’ll be able to work on that before too long. As well as liking Ruth’s idea for the slideshows, I like the recommitment to a daily dose of fibre too. I’m sure I must spend at least 5 minutes a day doing something to do with fibre, so I’m going to start keeping a log of what I manage. It might make me feel less like I’ve done nothing! Here’s a slideshow of stuff I made or did during the 2nd half of the year:

E-Book Giveaway

E-Book Giveaway

I haven’t done a Giveaway for a long time, so I thought the festive/holiday season is a good time to do another one! So this week, I’m doing a giveaway of my e-book, The Right Fibre.

It isn’t a project based book – I don’t tell you how I think you should use fibres, it’s an objective look at them. I profile 20 different embellishment fibres, and show lots of photos of how they look after felting in various ways, so it’s easy to compare them with each other and see similarities and differences.

There is also a section detailing various things which affect the way a fibre will felt and look after felting, so by the end you have the information you need to choose the right fibre and give you more control over the outcome.

For more information, have a look at the full blurb on my blog. To win a free copy of The Right Fibre, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post. If you’d like to spread the word through your blog or facebook etc, it would be very much appreciated but it isn’t a requirement. I will randomly draw the winner 8 days from now on Monday 31st Dec 2018, so please check back to see if you’ve won. Good Luck!

EDIT: SORRY! I completely forgot to link to the blurb on my blog! Thanks Ann 🙂

Giveaway Winner and a Couple of New Things

Giveaway Winner and a Couple of New Things

A couple of weeks ago I announced an embellishment giveaway.  I used a random number generator and I’m pleased to announce Meterrilee, Terri Simon is the winner.  Terri please email me or PM me on the forum with your address.  Congratulations and have fun with the embellishments! I look forward to seeing how you use them.

Since I have been traveling during the holidays, I haven’t been doing much felting.  Although I did finish a couple of small projects before the holidays.

I had been given some nice glass picture frames that have been sitting on my dresser.  I’ve noticed they scratch the wood when moved for cleaning.  So I decided to make use of some “unknown” fiber batts I’ve had sitting around.

I embellished one side with silk hankies and bits of teal bamboo.  The mat is spongy which is perfect for the glass frames to sit in.

Here’s a closeup and then the back. The nice thing is I change the look by flipping it over.

I also keep a bunch of little things on my nightstand so I made a holder for them as well.

The outside is embellished with some silk hankies.

I folded the top down.  It gave it a finished look and a bit more stability.

I hope everyone had a pleasant holiday and a Happy New Year!  Again, congratulations to Terri!

Year End Giveaway

Year End Giveaway

This year we’ve talked a lot about embellishments whether they were new fibers or scraps and saw a lot of samples.  A little embellishment goes a long way.  So, I decided to go thru my embellishment stash and choose ten different types that someone may like to try.

20161205_165943-1-1

There is approximately 10 grams of each.

Starting with the left hand row from the bottom up:  Ramie, Hemp, Milk Protein and Texas Mohair.

The second row:  Black Tussah, Yak and a multicolored silk Tussah.

The last row is Tencel, Mulberry silk and degummed cocoons.

Please note the Texas Mohair and the cocoons contain some VM.

I’ll mark each bag with the name and weight.

A couple of years ago I made a “sampler” book cover with a bunch of embellishments as a reference.

Australian Wool Show And A Winner!

Australian Wool Show And A Winner!

This is a guest post from Sue B. (chookie on the forum) who recently visited the Bendigo – Australian Wool Show. She does apologize for the quality of the photos as they were taking on her phone in crowds with moving models. Thanks for sharing Sue!

Fibre anyone?  3 days at the Bendigo – Australian Wool Show saw me both exhausted, spent out and very satisfied. With seven sheds of crafts and handiwork plus so many fibre and craft sellers/suppliers and demonstrators of everything from sewing machines to felting rollers, it took all of three days to see everything. Not counting the sheep judging of every breed in Australia plus some goats, shearing, sheepdog trials and all the tents with outside sellers selling everything from food ,clothing to tractors and all in between. Another large marquis was given over to education and many higher education facilities had stalls plus some student work in the fields of wool and wool craft or wool fashion. I was so busy looking I often forgot to take pics. LOL

Eco dyed entry in the Wool Craft Section – one full shed contained entries for all types of wool craft and all under glass so it was hard to avoid reflections in the images – my apologies for them.

This entry was knitted and felted and contained all one needs in one bag.to go crafting –  ingenious.

On day one I was lucky enough to catch the Wool Fashion Parade with felting, weaving and knitting  – and sometimes all on one garment – what fun and so well done. Unfortunately with the compere speaking and me taking pictures I didn’t get the details written down, but here are some catwalk images – sorry about the quality – I was using my phone and above and around spectators when I could get there. The theme for the entire show was based on May Gibbs Books “The Gumnut Babies”. Each catwalk entry was themed to this subject.

I finished my triangle scarf this week.

The silk side

There wasn’t that much shrinkage as it is very cobwebby on the wool side.

I finished the prefelt for the building on a Picture I am working on.

I cut some circles to make little earbud pouches.  Sorry I can’t right now remember who had this great idea to use scrap piece for felt for this. I want to keep my square credit card reader in one.

I made 2 pieces specially to cut up.

I love the way the silk throwsters waist seems to hover on the felt even though it is well attached. The blue one isn’t firm enough so I will rewet it and full it some more.

I also started 2 more. I laid the wool out first. The first one I used on large piece of silk  on top . I added the roving so you could see the colour. I wanted something a little more “masculine”.

peice for cutting dry

The other one I want more texture from the silk so I had to wet the back ground so the silk would stay where and how I put it. I then added some synthetic yarn and put tiny amounts of wool to bridge it and hold it down.  I really like how it looks so I think I will make a scarf in the same design. It is very dark in the picture because it is wet.

So that’s been my week in felt.  I hope you have been able to play with some fibers too. Don’t forget to enter the draw for a free hat class.

First Quarter Challenge and Giveaway Winner

First Quarter Challenge and Giveaway Winner

I actually got an early start on this quarter’s challenge for a change! In case you missed it, here’s Ruth’s original post: http://feltingandfiberstudio.com/2016/01/02/first-quarter-challenge-2016/  I’ve used flat resists before, mostly for surface design, simple cases, and a few bags. I have made a few 3D items with flat resists: some bird pods, a few hats, and even a supposed seed pod which looked like the rib cage of a dead animal, but I think I’ve only tried a vessel once and it was a bit flimsy. So, I thought I’d try a vessel again. I decided on a flower shape, I can’t find the actual resist, but it was basically a flower shape:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI used some 27 mic coloured Merino batt I bought from wollknoll and used some silk hankies over the top. This is how it looked from above:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHow the underneath looks:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd a kind of side view:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis is where the silk hankie was thicker:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd where it was fine:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd this is a close up of the batt texture:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIf I did it again, I would make the shape more curvy, where the petal shapes met, it was a sharp V shape and the vessel is too thin there, and in some places little holes. This is looking through the vessel opening at a thin patch:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWell, thanks everybody who entered the fibre giveaway, and thanks for the nice comments, I did read them all! The winner is: Jennifer Ralph! Congratulations, Jennifer. I will email you for your address to send the fibres. Please reply as soon as you can, if I don’t hear from you by Friday night, I’ll re-draw.

I decided to use a random number generator to pick the winner. http://andrew.hedges.name/experiments/random/ this one was really easy to use. The winning number was 50, Janet Danielson Larson. I will send you a private message on face book. Look in the requests part of the messages as we are not facebook friends.
