Creativity is a Verb

Creativity is a Verb

This isn’t a new book, but one that I have enjoyed reading numerous times. Creative is a Verb: If You’re Alive, You’re Creative by Patti Digh was published in 2011.

Creative is a verb cover

This is the description that is on Patti Digh’s website about the book: Your life is the work of art. Following up on her successful Life Is a Verb, and in the tradition of Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, Patti Digh here presents a book that leads readers by both heart and head to acknowledge, reinforce, and use their own creative spirit. Creative Is a Verb is a book for everyone, whether you say, “I’m not creative” or “I’m just a dabbler” or “I’m an artist.” Original artwork enhances each essay, contributed by artist/followers of the author’s blog, 37 days. Thirty-three related essays are organized around six overarching themes that guide readers beyond the fear of creativity to embrace their inner artist. As the author says, “If you’re alive, you’re creative.” Among the themes: “Be Ordinary,” “See More,” “Get Present,” and “Catch Fire.” Each essay is followed by creative exercises for the reader, allowing her to apply the principles of each story to her own life.

I’m not always one to do all the “exercises” in a book but I was certainly inspired by the essays and the quotes that are scattered throughout the book. I really like the way she tells who the book is for:

“This book is for everyone who courageously creates their life as a work of art, sometimes beautiful, sometimes messy, sometimes painful, sometimes mundane, and always an expression of their unique vision; for everyone who notices the color Chartreuse and crazy clouds wherever they go; for everyone who makes art from stones, from trash, from loss; for everyone who longs to climb back into the marvelous; for everyone who yearns to reclaim their creative spirit, their art spark and for those who want to jump into their yearning and walk toward their obstacles. Yes, I mean you.”

Does that sound like you?

Coppery Felt and Fimo

Coppery Felt and Fimo

Do you remember the coppery bronzey felt piece I posted about last month? I cut that up recently and started to make a glasses case and purse out of it. I have so many cut out or part made up items at the moment, I think I’ll be working on them all year 🙂  I did actually finish the glasses case though. This is one side of it:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd this is the other side:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI used some gorgeous hand dyed cotton perle 5 from Rainbow Girl on etsy. The variegated colours work perfectly. I also managed to do quite a lot on the purse. I managed to sew it all together already.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI still need to choose the right button, which always takes forever, and sew the buttonhole.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI’ve also been working on a Fimo tutorial the last few weeks. Taking photos has been harder than ever, it’s been really dark, stormy and rainy, which is nice but not great for taking phtotos inside. We did get a few really bright sunny days, so I worked on the opposite side of the house to the sun and managed to get a lot done, or so I thought. When I downloaded the photos, what looked good when I set up a shot, didn’t look good once hands were in the photo! I thought Monday would be perfect for working outside, it was bright but cloudy, but also really windy, so back indoors. I did get quite a few good photos all in all, including this one, which captures perfectly my attempt to get rid of the dent I caused when I released the camera from the tripod without holding it first!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd here’s a sneaky peek at one of the other pieces I worked on:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI’m nowhere near finishing it yet, but when I have, I’ll put it for sale on etsy, it won’t be expensive, but I want to put as much in it as possible, so if anyone has any ideas, suggestions or requests, if it’s something I know about, I’ll do my best to include it 🙂

Nuno Challenge Experiment One

Nuno Challenge Experiment One

The second quarter challenge over on the http://feltandfiberstudio.proboards.com/ is mine but I have yet to start. Today I started. Months ago I made a shrug jacket and then died it blue. It would not stop bleeding. I rinsed it for days. Changing the water several times a day. I reheated it in vinegar water and still it bleeds, so I gave up. with all the work  it has great texture.

blue experriment 2 blue experriment

To get the great texture it shrank a lot. It will no longer fit anyone.

blue experriment 3

Next I unpicked the sewing. Not an easy task. The stitching was really sunk into the felt. Next it was into the washer. I have a front loader. I hope it works well it isn’t as aggressive as at top loader. I have shrunk a sweater down from an extra-large to a child’s small in it so I had high hopes.

Here is the finished twice washed piece. The red piece is the original finished sized before all the rinsing and  washing. The coke can is for size reference.

blue experriment 4

Here are the close-ups. The texture is much tighter and the piece is much stiffer.

The biggest surprise was that there are definite lines of wool on the silk side. I am imagine it’s where each rows of wool overlapped. I only laid the wool in one direction for this piece.

Denim Notebooks

Denim Notebooks

I remembered recently that I have a huge bag of denim scraps, so when I was thinking of making a couple of new notebook covers, I got it out and had a look through. I wanted a really ‘worn’ and ‘used’ look to it, so I chose pieces from where pockets had been taken off, and pieces from the seams and hems. Once I’d torn strips to the size I wanted, I removed the extra threads and then sewed them onto a base piece of denim. Then I added a delrin clip so I could close it.

bookFor the second one, I wanted a slightly less ‘scruffy’ look, but didn’t want it too neat, so I used strips torn from where a pocket was taken off, so I’d still get some darker patches.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI also added a delrin clip to close this one too

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI did like the look of it, but it looked a little bit too ‘neat’ still, so I put it in with a load of laundry then hung it in the sun to dry.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI think this looks much better now that the frayed edges are softer

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI just wanted to say thank you to everyone who comments on Facebook when my posts are published there. I hope you don’t think I’m ignorant for never replying, but I don’t have a facebook account so I can’t, but I do appreciate the comments, likes and shares, thanks 🙂  I’d also like to apologise in advance for not commenting on flickr. The new changes are really not good for me. I have dodgy vision and the new ‘design’ is a violent visual onslaught for me, it gives me a headache to try to use it and causes my vision problems to get worse. So I probably won’t use it much until they change it back or I’ll go to ipernity with everyone else.

Felted Flowers

Felted Flowers

It has been busy around here as we are starting at a new Farmers’ market this weekend and we have been getting ready. This was difficult because they hadn’t sent us any thing about being accepted until a few days ago. There has not been much time for felting but I have managed to do a little. I made wet felted flower pins last year. They sold fairly well but the ones I had left seem tired looking so I am sprucing them up by needle felting some lines on them.
flowers

The other exiting thing is that a couple of weeks ago I wont the free give way from world of wool on face book. they sent me a grab bag of wool. The yellow and the purple seem to be silk but I am not sure because the didn’t label the different “balls”. It was a real surprise to win because I never will anything. the wools are great colours and will get put to good use.

Nuno Felting Experiments

Nuno Felting Experiments

I started thinking about Ann’s challenge right after it was announced in April but this is the first time I have been able to start working on the challenge actively. I wanted to try several different ideas I had for nuno that I hadn’t tried before. One was to try a cut prefelt shape sandwiched between two pieces of silk, the second was to try using rows of cheesecloth attached by felting and the third was to use locks as embellishment on nuno felt.

Pre Yarn Layout - BackI started with the largest piece that will be used on a project for an exhibition planned in October. This is the back side of the silk where I used preyarn to give a branching effect.

Layout FrontI then flipped the silk over and applied merino wool mixed with a variety of other fibers including silk noil, cashmere, angora, tencel, flax and banana fiber that I had carded into batts over the last month.

Added LocksNext came the locks which I added randomly over the surface. These were hand dyed Wensleydale locks and they are pretty coarse so I was wondering how they would migrate through the silk. I used 5mm silk gauze that I had previously hand dyed.

Finished Green Nuno

Here are the end results. I got lots of texture which I really wanted.

Texture Green NunoThis is the back side. You can see where the locks migrated through in the spots that look more yellow. No problems migrating through the silk.

Pre Felt on SilkMy next attempt was with the prefelt. Here is the shape that I cut out and I used some silk I already had. I did think to myself, this is 8 mm habotai silk and I don’t know what kind of wool is in the prefelt as I made it several years ago. Will it work? You should always listen to yourself.

Pre Felt SandwichI covered the prefelt with another piece of silk and then felted the piece by rolling. The fibers were migrating but not very quickly and not evenly. I kept working at it but it was slow. Next time I do this it will be with 5mm silk gauze and merino prefelt.

Finished SandwichHere is the result. I got a lot of ruching which is expected with 8mm habotai and all of the prefelt design is not attached. It would have worked better if I had listened to that little voice that warned it might not work.

Orange Pre FeltNext up was the experiment with cheesecloth and prefelt.

Hand Dyed 90# CheeseclothThe prefelt was another left over piece with unknown wool content. Here’s the cheesecloth. It’s 90# so pretty close weave for cheesecloth.

Cheese Cloth Strips

I ripped it into strips.

Ruffle Layer LayoutLaid it on the prefelt and then added a little bit of wool on the base of the cheesecloth that I wanted to felt in.

Wet Down and Plastic LayerI then wet that section down and covered it with plastic.

Second LayerThen I added another layer of cheesecloth and a bit more wool. Wet that layer down, covered with plastic and repeat.

All Layers Wet Down and CoveredThese are all the layers ready to start rolling.

Checking LayersIn the middle of felting, I did check the layers and did a bit of rubbing over the added wool.

Finished Layers

And here’s the result. Layered cheesecloth in rows that have been nuno felted in to the felt. They are very sturdy and you can’t pull them off.

Side View Cheesecloth LayersHere’s a side view where you can see the felt on the bottom. This would certainly have been simpler if I had just sewn the layers of cheesecloth down with the sewing machine. I’m not sure what the benefit of felting them would really be. But I guess on a three-dimensional piece that could not be sewn. it might be useful.

I enjoyed these experiments and have to think up some more ideas. I do have another idea floating around using Zed’s idea of nuno and resists that she showed earlier. Hopefully, I’ll have some time to try that idea out as well. Have you done anything for the nuno challenge? We’d love to see so please post it to Flickr or the forum.

Mixed Media Piece From Felt Scraps

Mixed Media Piece From Felt Scraps

Last year I was talking about sorting my felt and fibre scraps into categories. I sorted my felt offcuts by size ranging from long and wide to short and narrow. This photo shows them. I was trying to work out what to do with the smallest pieces. I wondered how it’d look if I just pushed them close together on top of a piece of fabric and sewed them into place. So, I tried. I started in the centre with some red pieces, and they worked alright, so I added more. I kept to similar colours and added some pieces of fabric too because I liked how the nuno felt pieces looked. I also added some art yarns for a bit more texture. I kept adding and sewing until the red section was done, then I worked on the blue part and did the green part last. When it was finished it looked like this:

mixed mediaI kept turning it around, folding it, measuring it. I made sure the piece of fabric I worked on was big enough for a book cover, but the finsihed piece was too thick for that. I turned it over, folded it again and measured a bit more, then decided I could make a book cover out of it if I cut it and used different felt for the inside flaps. So, more measuring, hunting for felt and sewing of felt to fabric. This is what the inside looked like before I’d quite finished the bottom edge:

insideAnd, this is what it looked like once all the edges were finished:

outsideI’m not sure whether I prefer it with the red part on the front:

redOr whether I like the blue better:

blueI had quite a good sized piece left over, and I actually really like the green part the best, so I thought I’d use it for a gadget/camera/phone case. This is one side:

backI don’t feel so odd now for saving all the tiniest bits of felt scraps ‘just in case’  🙂

Finding your Creative Side

Finding your Creative Side

Questions, ideas, head space

Just mainly thoughts today, or not 🙂

I know we’ve probably  had this conversation before but I do have so much trouble sorting out my ideas, my mind runs rampant sometimes with everything I want to do and I find it hard to make sense of it all. I don’t think theres a single day ( or minute) that goes by without me thinking of different ideas and sometimes  my head swims and its so frustrating that when I actually sit down to do something I go blank lol  I have so much trouble getting things out of my head

So my question is  how do you get your ideas from your head to work through your hands

I want to do everything and because of that everything gets so jumbled and then I get so annoyed and frustrated that I have walk away for a while,   I said to a friend once that I feel like I should open up the top of my head, let it all out , close it and start again lol  Wish i could do that, so how do you all do it.

I think I know the first thing Ruth will say and that’s   JOURNAL JOURNAL JOURNAL lol so yes im finally about to that, but first I have to make one that suits me and here it is ,  see the blank cover !!!!!!!!!!!!

journal

After that little rant i have been just trying to make small things to keep me busy, our life is pretty stressed at the moment and i will explain that on the forum but for now here’s just some small things i did make !!

This little box and books are from a tutorial by Luthian at her Altered Alchemy blog, i really love her work so i decided to try one of these, orginally in copper but i thought i’d try first with some card stock, its only about 1 inch big and i had fun, then had to make some little books to go with it, made from leather.

card box

Then thanks to my friend i scored a piece of copper so made a real one, trickier but so much fun again

copper

Next i made a sheet of silk paper and then !!!

paper

I wanted to make some sort of  book of it,   i used skewers for the binding and stitched in place

silk book2

It has 5 pages and i have no idea what to do with it now lol i know thats not a good pic sorry,

silk book

So can you see my dilema,  if i could work on one thing at a time and get it finished properly i would be so much happier but i seem to flit from one thing to the next because i cant wait to try everything,     any thoughts !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately only 2 of my pictures of the displays turned out

the first is a cowl by  Mireille Gagnon Moes who got honorable mention.

There was also a banquet with a fashion show and no of that turned out. it was dark and no one would stand still for a second to take the pictures. I was a failure as a photographer but I hope you like the pictures that did work.
