Australian Wool Show And A Winner!

Australian Wool Show And A Winner!

This is a guest post from Sue B. (chookie on the forum) who recently visited the Bendigo – Australian Wool Show. She does apologize for the quality of the photos as they were taking on her phone in crowds with moving models. Thanks for sharing Sue!

Fibre anyone?  3 days at the Bendigo – Australian Wool Show saw me both exhausted, spent out and very satisfied. With seven sheds of crafts and handiwork plus so many fibre and craft sellers/suppliers and demonstrators of everything from sewing machines to felting rollers, it took all of three days to see everything. Not counting the sheep judging of every breed in Australia plus some goats, shearing, sheepdog trials and all the tents with outside sellers selling everything from food ,clothing to tractors and all in between. Another large marquis was given over to education and many higher education facilities had stalls plus some student work in the fields of wool and wool craft or wool fashion. I was so busy looking I often forgot to take pics. LOL

Eco dyed entry in the Wool Craft Section – one full shed contained entries for all types of wool craft and all under glass so it was hard to avoid reflections in the images – my apologies for them.

This entry was knitted and felted and contained all one needs in one bag.to go crafting –  ingenious.

On day one I was lucky enough to catch the Wool Fashion Parade with felting, weaving and knitting  – and sometimes all on one garment – what fun and so well done. Unfortunately with the compere speaking and me taking pictures I didn’t get the details written down, but here are some catwalk images – sorry about the quality – I was using my phone and above and around spectators when I could get there. The theme for the entire show was based on May Gibbs Books “The Gumnut Babies”. Each catwalk entry was themed to this subject.

Odds & Ends

Odds & Ends

I’ve got several announcements today. The first is that our shop here on The Felting and Fiber Studio is open for business. There are tutorials and e-books by Zed and I. My book, The Complete Photo Guide to Felting, is also available but it doesn’t make much sense to ship it overseas as it costs as much for shipping as it does for the book. I will be adding more tutorials as I get them completed. These are the original projects that were meant to go in the book but were not included. So I have more that will be on nuno felting and wet felting.

In case you don’t read my personal blog, this is another entry I made for Ann’s 2nd quarter scrap challenge. It is inspired by my recent trip to Hawaii.

The second announcement is that I have started working on my next online class which will be stenciling, stamping and playing with thickened dye on felt. I plan on having the class ready to go in the fall. I have been carving some sample stamps. This is the first one. I developed this stamp from a photograph I took behind our house several years ago.

And here is a second one that I used the idea from one of my sketches. I developed this design from a set of curtains.

Original Leaf Sketch

This is the original sketch of the design.

aa wet felting FOR BEGINNERS 3 PART COURSE

The last announcement is to remind everyone that our Wet Felting for Beginners Online course is always available now. If you’re just finding us, this is a great class to learn wet felting. You can sign up here.

Oh and Happy Friday the 13th!

Upcoming Course Opportunities

Upcoming Course Opportunities

For those of you in the northwest United States and Canada, I want to let you know about a couple of upcoming fiber art courses. I’m excited to announce that Gail Harker is coming back to Montana to teach Level 1 Experimental Machine Stitch. The course will be held May 18-22 in downtown Kalispell, Montana. The deadline to sign up is March 18th. If you are anywhere close, it will be a fun class so I hope you’ll join us.

The photo above shows one of the pieces I created in that class when I took it in 2009. Here is a PDF about the course:

Brochure_L1M_Montana

The other news is that I am planning on teaching at Olds Fibre Week in June in Olds, Canada (just north of Calgary). I have 5 classes on the schedule including nuno felting a scarf, wet felting a phone sleeve, wet felting a cup cozie, wet felting a cat cave and wet felting a pair of slippers. There are also some other really interesting looking classes on the schedule for spinners, weavers, natural dyers and a few more felting classes. Registration for Olds Fibre Week opens on March 8.

purple scarf layout web

In preparation for teaching, I have started making samples. This is the starting layout for a nuno felt scarf that has a bit of extra cobweb felt on each end.

purple scarf layout with embellishments

Here’s the layout after adding silk noil and ramie. I used merino and ramie from Big Sky Fiber Arts that Karen so generously gave me. I used a 5 mm silk scarf that I ice dyed about a month ago.

Here is the finished scarf. The top left photo shows the wool side and the top right shows the silk side. You can better see the ice dyeing effect on the silk side but it does show in person on the wool side as I laid the wool very sparingly to get more of a cobweb type effect over the entire scarf. The bottom two photos give you a closer view.

I do hope you’ll consider attending one of these courses. I’d love to see you there.

UPDATE: Due to unforeseen issues, I will not be teaching at Olds Fibre Week 2016 after all. There will be other felting classes available as well as spinning, weaving, knitting, dyeing etc. Hopefully, I will be able to teach there in 2017.

Experimental Screen Printing Online Class

Experimental Screen Printing Online Class

I am excited to announce that the second module of Embellishing Felt with Surface Design Techniques – A Mixed Media Approach is scheduled for January 22, 2015. The second module is Experimental Screen Printing.

Samples of Screen Printed Felt

All of the felt in the photo above is a screen printed sample that I made during my preparations for the class. In this class you will learn how to make your own screen and print board, learn how to thicken dye and steam the felt after screen printing and numerous screen printing techniques. For more information about the class and to sign up, please see the class information page.

I love to experiment with different techniques and I will show you how to screen print but also encourage you to experiment with combining various techniques. You will learn how to create printed felt or silk that is uniquely your own. I will show you how screen printing is easy to do and how you can use items from around the house to create wonderful printed surfaces.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to leave me a comment. I hope you’ll consider joining me for the course as it is going to be a lot of fun. To sign up for the course, please fill out the contact form on the class page here.

Remember, the course will begin on Friday, January 22, 2016. There will be four weeks of course material and then an extra 2 weeks to access all the course materials and videos. I will be available throughout the full six weeks to answer questions and provide tutor support. The cost of the course is $45 US.

If you have someone who still is looking for a good idea for a Christmas present for you, wouldn’t this make a nice present? Just have them put your relevant information in the contact form and I will bill them for your class and send you an e-mail notifying you of the gift.

I would appreciate it if you would share this on social media to spread the word. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who participated!

Before I had surgery I felted a couple of small things.  The first was using the roving I had dyed for the 3rd Quarter Challenge to make a pod with cuts showing other colors underneath. I had used a lot of coarse fibers and decided I liked the rugged look so I didn’t shave it.

20150716_152736 20150716_153335 20150716_152805 20150716_15275520151210_110954

The next was a gift for a friend for her 70th birthday.  Another pod, but slightly larger.  I made some batts first. I used sparkly yarn as well as silk and milk protein for embellishments.

20151003_13023120151007_145056 20151007_145047

If you look closely you can see the sparkly yarn inside.

20151007_145109

Then to get into the holiday spirit I made a poinsettia flower with the intention of embellishing it later.

I used very thin prefelt, cut out the leaf shapes and used layers of saran wrap to separate them.

20151030_165533 20151112_113028

While I’ve been recuperating from surgery, I’ve been working on some small projects.  I finished the poinsettia by adding beads and adding stitching to the leaves and petals.

20151115_130411 20151114_141015_edited-1It’s now hanging on a wall to add a little holiday cheer to the house.

What have you been doing for the holidays?

Notebook Winner and Another Free Design

Notebook Winner and Another Free Design

The winner of the felt notebook is Rhonda Lynn! Rhonda Lynn please contact me with your snail mail address at laneruthe at gmail dot com and I will send you the notebook. I used a random number generator to pick the winner and the number was 11. So congratulations to Rhonda Lynn.

Back in October, I told you about a project I am working on with Deb Stika using her contemporary and modern designs. So I am posting another free design today in PDF format that you are welcome to use in your work. I would love to see if you make anything. Last time, Teri Berry made a beautiful nuno felted creation from one of the designs. You can see her piece here.

Psychedelic 1

This next design is in the Psychedelic category.

Psychedelic 1 - Hand Stitch

This is Deb’s hand stitched representation of the design. The background fabric is a piece of screen printed fabric that I made several years ago.

Cut Back Felt Machine Applique - Psychedelic Design 1

And this is my machine stitched cut back applique made with two layers of felt. Since several people thought it would be a good idea to have some tutorial aspects in the proposed book, I did a short tutorial to show you how I made this.

Water Soluble Taped to Paper Design

I started with the printed design on paper. I then taped down water soluble fabric over the design and traced it. Use a regular pencil, not a colored pencil. Colored pencils have wax that gum up your sewing machine needle.

Two Layers of Felt

I then chose a couple of pieces of screen printed felt in different colors. It helps if the colors are different either in value or hue.

Water Soluble with Design on Felt

I placed the design over the felt and then…

Water Soluble Fabric Pinned to Two Layers of Felt

pinned it down. It would probably be better to baste all the layers together but I was being lazy and it actually didn’t shift that much with stitching.

Stitching Outer Edge

I then began free motion stitching the outer edge. With free motion stitching you need to use a darning foot, lower the feed dogs and set your stitch length to zero. I stitched all the lines at least twice over.

Close Up Free Motion Machine Stitching

Here’s a little bit closer view of the stitching.

Stitching Inner Lines

Then I started working on the inner lines. I made sure to stitch in place at the end of each inner design to lock the thread and then just moved the needle to the next spot. At the end, you have to trim off all the threads that are between the stitched designs.

Still Stitching

And then I stitched, stitched and stitched some more. It took a while.

Ready to Start Cutting Back

I cut off the excess threads and trimmed off the extra water soluble fabric from around the edges.

Water Soluble Dissolved

Then I soaked the piece in warm water to dissolve the water soluble fabric. Then I let the piece dry completely. I forgot to take any photos of the cut back process. While carefully looking at the paper design, I decided which areas to cut out. Use a sharp pair of embroidery type scissors and cut inside your stitched lines. Only cut the first layer of fabric or felt as close to the stitched line as possible. But don’t cut through your stitching.

Cut Back Complete

And here you can see the green beneath showing where I cut out portion of the upper blue felt.

Dense Free Motion Stitching

I then did some really dense stitching on the “black” part of the original design.

Cut Back Felt Machine Applique - Psychedelic Design 1

And this is the result. I think if I was going to mount this piece, I might cut around the outside of the design to give it more definition. But I am leaving it how it is for right now. So here’s another mini challenge, use this design in your own work with whatever media you choose. You can increase the size of the design if you’d like or leave it as it is. Have fun!

The Whitefish Fashion Collection

The Whitefish Fashion Collection

I have written several posts about my interpretations in fabric of The Whitefish Fashion Collection that was originated from sketches by Nanci Williams. The exciting news is that is has all come together. We have the book!

Book Cover

If you’re interested, you can purchase a copy on Amazon. The opening of the exhibit was on August 6th and the show will be up for the entire month of August at The Purple Pomegranate in Whitefish, Montana. So if you happen to be in the area, please stop in!

Nanci Williams

This is Nanci, the consummate people watcher and creator of the delightful sketches on which this book is based.

WF Fashion Collection - 1st Sketch by Nanci Williams

This is the very first sketch that Nanci drew and the collection has grown from there. I ended up making a total eight pieces for the show and the wonderful news is that I already sold one of my pieces.

If you’d like to see more of the sketches and more about the book, you can visit The Whitefish Fashion Collection blog. I am going to try and get video of the opening and will post that there soon.
