Diamonds and Dolls

The title of this post is misleading: although there are several diamonds in this story (in shape, not in value!) there is only one doll. Apologies for this, but “Many Diamonds and Just One Doll” just didn’t sound as good a title to me. Let’s begin with the first, shall we? The diamonds If you use yarn in any way in a crafting project, chances are you end up with leftovers once you’re done. What to do with the lovely…

I did this during our March break. The schools are closed for a week. iws going to do this at home but then thought what the heck it’s a small project and Monday is our socials at the guild. Back to Dragon’s Wings

I must make design decisions for Dragons wings. I considered the aerodynamic properties of creatures who are propelled by Magic or possibly a lot of hot air. Should the wing be thicker to trap more air thus giving him better lift with air displacement? Alternatively, would thicker wings add too much weight and should I look at a thinner more gossamer wing structure to keep his overall weight down?  He has those industrial strength hands and feet so maybe not…

Mr. Mer does a few quick stretches to start the New Year

January 8th, 2022 It’s the new year and like a new crisp white piece of paper, it’s all possibilities as you hold your pencil above it and wait to decide which way to go. Will it be a drawing of a landscape, will I work on a sculptural idea, will it be a note that I shouldn’t forget something, too late I likely have forgotten it since the paper is still blank. I have things I want to work on…

2D felted landscape workshop

Saturday, Feb 11th, 2023, was the date scheduled for the next 2D felted landscape workshop at the local guild. Before Xmas we had a lot of workshops have to reschedule. Either the weather was against us, or the instructor or the students had caught the flu going through town. (Technically that is better than covid but it still sounded awful.) In the aftermath of the sudden arrival of winter the weekend before, I had been left fighting Glenn’s generosity (he…

Recycling, upcycling…..and how one thing leads to another

It’s that time of year when there are lots of Christmas fairs coming up & I need to make some festive items.  Recently, I picked up some Christmas-themed small wooden blanks (for tree decorations, or maybe gift tags) very cheaply in a charity shop. I started doodling on them with acrylic pens and found I was enjoying myself – it made me think about the recent popularity of adult colouring books.  Good for mindfulness. Some examples of the painted blanks –…

Getting in a Spin

Creative Fibre in New Zealand are hosting a series of workshops next weekend, one of which is a beginner’s spinning workshop with Pat Old. She is quite the celebrity in NZ spinning circles but I’m not sure if that is also true internationally…. have you heard of her before? I dithered about signing up for this class because one of the prerequisites was that you need to bring a wheel in good order, bobbins and lazy Kate. I wasn’t sure…

Felting Surfaces & The new game, “What is that smell?”

A short bit more about felting surfaces As you may remember from my last post, I wanted to look at some of the types of felt pads but had not yet got my hands on them. Well, this week 2 examples have arrived! I hope you won’t mind and will join me as I investigate. The felt pads from the descriptions and images seem to come in 2 main types. Thick felt pad; the photos look like industrial Felt, which…
