A Summer Round Up

A Summer Round Up

As I sit down to begin this post the sky has darkened and the rain (fingers crossed) is about to fall, heaven knows we need it, but what a fabulous summer it’s been so far here in sunny Lincolnshire! I don’t know about you but I tend to not do too much in the way of creative stuff through July and August as there are too many distractions and this year the intense heat has made me feel very lazy so lots of time spent relaxing, reading and watching creative videos. Consequently I’ve now got a table of projects I want to finish and a head full of others I want to start!

A couple of projects I did do this summer are two wet felted vessels. The first one, inspired by a shrivelled seed pod, was made at the İFA Region 8’s Summer School in Arnesby near Leicester. Our region encompasses several counties and is so spread out we struggle to get our İFA members to attend. On the other hand we have a regular group of creative ‘non members’ in the locality who are more than welcome to come along to our events, and thankfully they do! It was a busy and fun two days…..

My seed pod began life as five leaf book resist measuring 27cm x 36cm and various colours of Merino and Corriedale fibres.

It’s final shape was formed after lots of pushing and pulling and using strong clips to get it to stay as I wanted it.I decided to keep the opening as tiny as possible and, as a consequence, the resist had to be ripped to shreds in order to remove it! I’m wondering about adding some hand embroidery here and there in the shape of circles using a dull gold thread, I think it’s lacking something but is that it?

The second vessel was started last Friday when I was working at the Usher Gallery in Lincoln. I’d seen a post somewhere mentioning they were having their second Artist Studio Day and inviting local artists to apply. If successful it meant I would get the use of a table in their ground floor workspace and get to spend the day with four other artists. It sounded like a great opportunity and I’m so glad I applied! Only four artists turned up on the day and unfortunately one of those had to leave early. My other two companions were both painters and it was nice to get to know a bit about them and watch them work. We had a few members of the public come in to see what we were doing but for most of the time it was very quiet which allowed us to focus on what we were doing.

Knowing I wouldn’t get finished, but would need to get my vessel to a stable state before leaving the gallery, meant I needed to do a bit of prep the day before. So I decided on a size, cut my circular resist and made this piece of prefelt combining threads, fabrics and fibres to cut up and use as surface decoration.

By the time we had to leave I had a stable prefelt that looked like a pizza and could be folded into my bag….it was too large to carry it flat!

One of the Summer pieces I’ve yet to finish is an Iris which I started at the end of July. This is going to be for the Lincolnshire Textile Groups Bountiful Botanicals competition taking place in October. I’m creating it from hand painted Tyvek fabric and wire and the flower will be approximately 30cm dia by 115cm tall. I’ve just got the leaves to do now and then I’ve got the perfect spot for it in my lounge when it’s finished. I don’t want to reveal too much before the competition so this is a sneak preview for now…..

Finally I’ll leave you with some images from this year’s fabulous Asylum Steampunk Festival. As ever there were some outstanding costumes, some very strange costumes and some that looked like they’d missed the theme altogether but it really didn’t matter! There were steampunk enthusiasts represented from all over the UK and from various European countries. One lady said she had come over from Hong Kong especially to join in the festival! The atmosphere is the friendliest you could imagine and the whole Cathedral Quarter was buzzing!

True to form I didn’t make time to create a costume but this year I did dig out a long skirt and a waistcoat as a (very) token gesture in order to wear my oversized steampunk dragonfly brooch.

  1. You look as if you’ve had a wonderful summer. I can relate to not doing too much during July and August, but at least you haven’t wasted your down time. I did – I spent too much time binge watching on my laptop.
The image of the fibres you used for your seed pod shows some very yummy colours, the seed pod too, gorgeous, and I love the prefelt you used for the other vessel and the way the bits of it look in your finished “rock pod”.
I can’t wait to see the finished Iris. The images you’ve shown us look very intriguing and your colour choices are wonderful.
The steam punk folk look as if they are enjoying themselves. I was studying the full head masks the “pirates” were showing/wearing and then looked at the picture immediately to the right with the couple and the photographer. I had to look really closely to convince myself that he wasn’t wearing a mask too – I think!
Your costume looked good and I love that dragonfly brooch.

    1. Oh you weren’t the only one binging this Summer, I did my share of it on YouTube Ann but the past two months have felt like one long holiday so I didn’t care!😁 One of the artists at the gallery was working with transparent tissue papers and her Gelli plate to create source material for her mixed media paintings. I’ve been hooked on watching gelli print videos since then and I can feel a printing session coming on very soon.
Those seed pod colours only happened because I wanted to do something different (for me that is) so deliberately didn’t allow myself to take my favourite neutral/paler colours with me to Arnesby, it also meant I had to fight the urge to buy those colours while I was down there too!
My favourite of the vessels has to be the rock pod and fortunately I’ve enough of the prefelt left to make a couple of smaller versions.
Oooops….no, the photographer wasn’t wearing a mask. Maybe a trip to Specsavers Ann?😳 I can see your problem, for some reason the Steampunk images wouldn’t expand so I will pop back on to WordPress later and put that right. My outfit was very subdued, and I beat myself up about not making a proper costume, but my brooch got a few admiring comments so that was nice.

  2. Your vessles are amazing and I particularly like the rock inspired one. I only just spotted you as we walked past so still never got to see your wonderful dragonfly. The weekend is the most inclusive festival ever. We met a lady from New Zealand who had come especially for the festival and joined the squadron. And of course Rena and friends from Japan.

    1. Thanks Jo, I’m upscaling my vessels with our exhibition in mind.
The parade was wonderful and you all looked so happy, the festival has such a positive vibe! Its fantastic how far folk are prepared to travel for this event. I’ll bring my dragonfly next time we meet up.

  3. Love your pods Karen and also your pre-pod pizza!
The festival, from all the photos & comments, appears to be a venue not to be missed….maybe next year.
You might have not dressed up to the nines but that meant your bug brooch took centre stage….fabulous.
Looking forward to the full emergence of your iris

    Xx

    1. Thanks Antje. If the festival is held in Lincoln next year and you get to visit you won’t be disappointed. I say “if it is” because there’s talk of it maybe moving venue to make it more affordable for those taking part. I will update you when I know for sure.

    1. Thank you so much.
I love playing with prefelts and textures so my rock inspired collection is growing! The texture you can achieve from heating Tyvek is also gorgeous, especially when painted with metallics.

  4. You probably looked the bees knees in your outfit with your dragonfly!

Yes the summer is not a good time to be indoors felting – understandable – at least the classes made you do something!

The iridescent colours of your iris are beautiful – looking forward to seeing the whole thing 🙂

    1. Thanks Lyn. There’s something very uplifting about felting as a group, we never fail to have a good time!
The iris should have been finished by now but the days have filled up with other jobs so I’ve got nothing creative done! There’s always tomorrow🤞

  5. I seemed to have missed this post as I had company and then went to our annual art retreat. It looks like you have been having a fun summer. The pods are great and I like the colorful seedpod. Not sure it needs anything else added. The rock pod is gorgeous too. And the steampunk looks like a really fun gathering. I can’t wait to see the flower in all it’s glory.

    1. Yes it’s been a lovely summer over here Ruth, I don’t remember a better one weather wise! I still feel the coloured pod is lacking texture so it will get tweaked at some point.
Hope you had a great time at your annual retreat, I know you will have!

  6. Those pods are beautiful. Karen! However, that flower will take the cake for sure – the details alone look amazing and I can’t wait to see the whole thing!

The steampunk event looked like a lot of fun. As someone who just finished re-listening to The Time Machine by H.G. Wells, I thought it was perfect timing for me to look at those amusing and wonderful costumes.

    1. Thanks Leonor. You would love the Steampunk weekend! I wonder if you have anything like it in Edinburgh? I haven’t listened to The Time Machine so maybe I should do that sometime.

    2. I haven’t heard of anything Steampunk-y here in Edinburgh, sadly. We do have witchy things such as Beltane celebrations and Samhain, and I do see some people dressed up. Fewer cogs in those costumes, though 😀

The Time Machine is a bit odd for my modern sensitivities… I prefer the film with Guy Pearce 😉

    3. I love any excuse for dressing up, my bride of dracula costume hasn’t seen the light if day for a few years though…. probably apt!🤣

We would love to hear your thoughts!
