A little Progress on the Workshop and Some Nice Yarn.

A little Progress on the Workshop and Some Nice Yarn.

I have finished the first draft of the resist workshop. 6 pages, and I haven’t added any pictures yet. I printed it out, and I am working on the first sample. I will add notes to the draft and add in anything I missed. The first sample is a circle resist.

stack of wool resists
All stacked and ready to go
stack of resists and rubbing tool
Time to start rubbing

That is how far I got, one set of all the surfaces rubbed. I am going to have to find my studio microwave and set it up so I can reheat these when I get back to them.

The only other fibery thing I have done lately is spin on my drop spindle. I do this mostly when I go to guild socials. It’s a nice, portable way to work.

Here are some balls I made earlier,

The dark pink has some silk in it, I think it came from Louet a long time ago.  The light blue and purple is from a batt I bought at a fiber show. The other three I made on my blending board. They are meino and sari silk. I like the pops of colour and slight slubbiness it gives the yarn.

Now, I am working on a sample pack from World of Wool. I got it last year. I am just getting to it now. They no longer sell this wool. It is Merino and Stelina (metallic-coated nylon). The Stelina is very sparlkely.

I did the yellow first, mostly for a change. I don’t do much yellow. It is hard to get the sparkle with the camera but there is lots of it.  As usual, I found it stuck to several things when I pulled my laundry out of the dryer. It really does get everywhere.

That’s it for my fiberiness for the last little while. I hope everyone is coming out of the winter blues and into the joys of spring. I am looking forward to being able to sit in the garden, in the sun and enjoy my felting and fibers among the flowers and bird song.

  1. Good job Ann getting your draft written and starting your sample.
From above it looks like you have 2 ‘stacked’ circles that will give you 4 book resist ‘wings’ or have I mis-read it….should I be seeing 3 ‘stacked’ circles to give you 6 ‘wings’!

Your yarns look totally ‘delicious’. What will you do with them all? And what a great activity at your socials.

Sparkly bits everywhere. Oh yes, I bought a sparkly charity shop jumper, thinking it would add something extra to my imagined felt work – it certainly added something extra….to ALL my laundry as it had spread around the washing machine drum….all over me, because I’d shaken it vigorously….which I then spread here and there all over the carpets. It never made it to my supplies….it went straight back to a charity shop 🤪

    1. HI there are 3 circles so 6 wings. Its hard to see with all the plastic in between.
I do enjoy spinning, its an odd hobby for someone that doesn’t knit or crochet but they are fun to add to felt. The sparkle does travel, not quite as bad a glitter but far enough.

  2. Hmmm, I wonder where you’re going with the circular resists, can’t wait to see what’s next with them.
Your spinning is great Ann, I’ve never had the patience to master spindle spinning, I spend too much time bending down to pick the d***d thing up off the floor. 👿
Those World of Wool fibres are gorgeous, and they would be even without the sparkle, though I have to admit I prefer them unspun (as is my wont). I think I would be more inclined to felt them so as not to loose the beautiful blends.
Sparkles do get around, and I have similar problems with organza threads – every Panto season I find them everywhere.

    1. I am not sure where I am going with the resist other then the general shape it makes. I did drop it a lot when I first started. I don’t drop it often now. not spinning for any particular reason makes it less stressful. I wonder how much other tread is around but we don’t see it because it doesn’t shine.

  3. What a shame that the lovely sparkly wool is discontinued!
You’re making good progress on the workshop – it’s an uphill slog but worth it in the end.
We’re starting to notice an increase in birdsong and it’s sometimes warm enough to sit for a cuppa in the garden – it won’t be long before we’re moaning it’s too hot! 🙂

    1. I am not sure why they discontinued it. It was more expensive than the other sparkly things they have so maybe not popular enough. We had a dusting of snow yesterday so we are a ways away form sitting out yet. You are right we will be complaining its to hot soon.

  4. Great job on the workshop (this definitely could be an online class even without videos), you are making good progress. I look forward to see how you will shape your final piece. The yarn is scrumptious. I dislike sparkles strongly for all the reasons that people have already listed. It’s like glitter, bad stuff.

My daffodils are coming up, still a few more weeks until they bloom though. That’s when I declare spring, when the first daffodil blooms. But it’s supposed to be in the 60’s this week and today is our last day of skiing most likely.

    1. I am hoping to make it work on line, fingers crossed. sparkles do seem to spread trapping them in the twist should help.
No flowers up here yet but the maple sap is running. It’s just the right weather for it, just above freezing during the day and just below at night.

  5. The saying is true Ann. Give something to a busy person if you want to get things done. That busy person is you! I am delighted to see that you are making progress with your workshop. You are certainly breaking the back on it.

Your spun fibre is beautiful and I love all the bright colours, full of optimism. Spring has definitely arrived. All our daffodils are up now, their arrival definitely heralds warmer times. Very glad to say goodbye to the winter.

    1. LOL every time we have a spare 5 min we put 20 min of work in it. March is a very changeable month here. It can’t decide if it wants to be wither or spring.

  6. I like a bit of sparkle too Ann, have you tried the Glitzy range from WofW? It’s Merino with Trilobal Nylon and there are some lovely colour options. I’ve used it in several projects and not found it a problem with shedding the sparkle. Having said that, I’m not spinning with it so maybe that makes a difference?
I notice you are using one of my favourite (no expensive spared😉) felting tools!

We would love to hear your thoughts!
