Plans, Shopping, Lambs and Flowers

Spring is so busy and we have a lot going on. First, even though it is already the 13 of May I have just picked out a piece of felt for my May slow stitch page. It is thin and soft so it will probably need some stabiliser on the back when I am done. There is a little sparkle that the camera is not picking up.  I have picked some things to stitch on it but I will keep that for when it’s done.

Also only in the planning is another spiral. I am thinking of using some locks on this one.

Next was shopping. The first fibre show of the year for me was last weekend.  Well, if you don’t count the shopping at the spin. It’s called For the Love of Fibre.  It’s a small show but lots of great stuff. I picked up a small amount of 2 colours I don’t have, just to have them. What better reason could there be? I am sure Jan will have lots of pictures to show you

and 2 art batts. this first one just screams summer beach and will probably get used as is with a few embellishments.

This one I don’t know. I may deconstruct it and use it in a picture or spin some. I don’t know yet.

And some lovely dark brown Gottland locks because I can’t resist locks. Well, actually, I resisted a lot of locks, despite Jan’s best efforts to get me to pick other colours too.

Next, we have lambs, there are about 20 in the barn and maybe 10-15 sheep waiting to have their lambs. We now have 2 in the house. 2 I showed you  Sven and Henna and now we have Jett. Poor Jett. his mom likes him but won’t let him drink. he has sharp teeth or rather he had sharp teeth. We used a fine emery board to gently file them but Mom was not willing to take a chance, so he had to come in. He has only been in a couple of days and hasn’t worked out drinking from a bottle yet. We are working on it.

Here the 3 of them are in their outdoor pen.

And now for some inspiration. Spring is so inspiring. My front yard has very little grass, mostly it has violets. Most are the standard purple ones.

But also some white and purple ones, and some purple speckled ones.

I think the speckled ones are my favourite.

And soon there will be lilacs. I can’t wait to smell them.

I hope your spring is going as well as mine.

  1. Lots of exiting things, Ann. To me the second art batt is asking to be a slightly impressionistic water scene – a pond maybe. Think Monet. But then I’m very fond of a slightly impressionistic water scenes! Your new fibres are all lovely and I’m very impressed you’ve got your lambs in care in a very nice range of colours too. How clever!

  2. Love your choice of batts & yes, I can see a Monet style picture too.
Those locks are just inviting my fingers in to massage them 🤪 how could you resist Jan’s encouragement to buy other colours!!!

Looking forward to seeing your stitched additions for your May page.

Your violets are beautifully varied of which my fav would be the pale one.

Oh those lambs….they are so cute. Jett’s mother has my sympathy….I remember teeth clamping down around 5-6months….but sharp teeth too….ouch!!!

    1. Thanks Antje Monet seems to be what we are all seeing. It took a lot of effort to resist buying more locks, I do love them so.
I am hoping to get the may page started tonight, finger crosses.
Violets are one of my favourite flowers. They are very tenacious.
I sympathize with Jett’s mom too, poor thing the other one is fine. Each lamb usually picks a side and stays with it so the other side wasn’t sore. It has made him leery of sucking too so its a battle to get enough food into him at the moment. The other two seem to feel we are starving them.

  3. The felt reflects the colours in the garden in May beautifully so your page is off to a good start! We totally get why you bought those two batts 🙂
Those lambs keep you busy don’t they? Hope Jett works out how to drink from the bottle soon.
Oh the scent of lilacs is heavenly – bet you bury your head in that shrub soon.

    1. The garden is really taking off now. I have mostly stuff you just ignore and it grows.
The batts are just so summery aren’t they.
Yes, the lambs are keeping us busy. The older two could probably go to the barn but that would leave Jett alone so we will keep them in for now.
I love the lilacs too. I cant wait to cut some for the house.

  4. That’s a gorgeous piece of felt you’ve picked for your next page.
Those 2 bats are wonderful too. I can definiteluy see the sea/beach in the first and the second says Monet to me – lots of lily pads on a pond in breezy weather.
(having written that, I’ve just gone back and read the earlier comments and we seem to be in tune.)
Poor Jett. He is lovely but I can understand mum’s reluctance to let him near her teats – once bitten ….?
Love the violets. They are one of my favourite flowers. When I was a child, I used to have picnics in a spinney which was carpeted in bluebells and violets. I’m not ashamed to say I dug up and brought home some of each – there was no law against it in those days. I still have their decendents in my garden today, though sadly the bluebells are being converted to Spanish ones.

    1. Thanks Ann, I hope my plan for the page works out. your memory sounds heavenly. we don’t have wild bluebells here. I googled them and there are 9 species in Canada. Its sad about the bluebells. I read the Spanish ones have no scent. I have heard people talk about violets having scent but non of mine do.
Monet seems to be the theme for batt 2.

    1. Thank you. I found them in a wild area and dug some up. They have spread slowly since then. Maybe stealing flowers form the wild is an Ann thing to do. LOL

  5. I’m looking forward to seeing your May stitching. It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through the month. Your batts are gorgeous and the lock look like your new baby Jett. Too bad about his not eating well, hopefully, he will get it figured out soon. I have wild violets around me and I don’t think they are as big as yours. Plus, I only have purple, although I have seen the white ones in other areas around me. Besides the daffodils, I have let my beds be taken over by whatever ‘wildflower’ wants to grow. The weeds are winning the war!

    1. Thanks Ruth. It was hard picking batts there were so many nice ones. I hope he figures it out soon too. weeds are just flowers in the wrong place. So if you like them they are wild flowers. I like to plant things that are invasive together and them the fight it out. so far the only non survivor is the mint I planted.

  6. Anne, I am in love with sweet Jett. I always find myself drawn to the dark coated sheep…maybe something to do with the nursery rhyme, and my grandmother’s own stories of her sheep.

Those batts are dreamy! I was excited to learn more about batt creation at John C Campbell. Batts prepared with spinning in mind, are generally more lofty looking in presentation. While art batts tend to have more chunky details, and the dramatic inclusions, we all love to see. (Like the batts you’ve shown.) We discussed opportunities available for those who create batts, and label them, by purpose intended: eliminating buyer remorse later.

There’s always more to learn in our felting and fiber pursuits! Happy Spring and belated Mother’s Day to all.

    1. I love black sheep as well even if they are sun bleached by fall. The batts are nice. I think the first one would spin easily but the other one has some big chunks of things in it. Sometimes its better to split them in layers to work with.
I have heard of the John C Campbell school. It sounds like a fun place to go for classes. Always learning is part of the fun.

  7. Lovely batts you got, Ann! And those Gotland locks are lush (I love locks and Gotland is one of my favourite breeds so I’m very jealous 😉 )

Those lambs are adorable and just make your Spring extra special, don’t they? I hope little Jett thrives and grows to do all sorts of sheepy antics!

    1. The batts and the locks are lovely Leonor, I am looking forward to using them. Lambs do make spring special but they are also a lot of work. Jett is getting a bit better at the bottle. he will get there. Then the three of them can get into mischief together.

  8. The colour of those 2 batts are to die for. Love them.
The lambs are so cute and that never changes, each year they are tugging our heart strings.
My white and dark violet lilacs are nearly over now, but were glorious in the sunshine, and the sweet violets are just so lovely.
Looking forward to seeing what you place on your May page.

  9. Sorry Ann, catching up on all the lovely posts so I am rather late reading my backlog.
Spring brings newness and hope and these are the vibes I am getting from your post. I love the colours of all the fibres in the batts. I suspect the real challenge is leaving things behind at these festivals. Envy here, I wish the Star Trek transporter really existed!
Your little lambs, now they would be top of my list if I could be whirled across the ocean, although I would most likely have them accompany me to the festival. They are so cute and huggable. (that’s just the city gal in me coming to the fore).
It’s so lovely to see the start of regrowth in the garden. It will no doubt, supply loads of inspiration for your creations.
