Denim Notebooks

Denim Notebooks

I remembered recently that I have a huge bag of denim scraps, so when I was thinking of making a couple of new notebook covers, I got it out and had a look through. I wanted a really ‘worn’ and ‘used’ look to it, so I chose pieces from where pockets had been taken off, and pieces from the seams and hems. Once I’d torn strips to the size I wanted, I removed the extra threads and then sewed them onto a base piece of denim. Then I added a delrin clip so I could close it.

bookFor the second one, I wanted a slightly less ‘scruffy’ look, but didn’t want it too neat, so I used strips torn from where a pocket was taken off, so I’d still get some darker patches.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI also added a delrin clip to close this one too

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI did like the look of it, but it looked a little bit too ‘neat’ still, so I put it in with a load of laundry then hung it in the sun to dry.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI think this looks much better now that the frayed edges are softer

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI just wanted to say thank you to everyone who comments on Facebook when my posts are published there. I hope you don’t think I’m ignorant for never replying, but I don’t have a facebook account so I can’t, but I do appreciate the comments, likes and shares, thanks 🙂  I’d also like to apologise in advance for not commenting on flickr. The new changes are really not good for me. I have dodgy vision and the new ‘design’ is a violent visual onslaught for me, it gives me a headache to try to use it and causes my vision problems to get worse. So I probably won’t use it much until they change it back or I’ll go to ipernity with everyone else.

    1. Thanks, Lyn 🙂
Yeah, I think I’ll have to wash the first one too now, plus the other one smells so nice!

  1. As usual, very nice use of fabric scraps. Personally I like the second one because it has that pocket piece that I would find useful for cards or notes. I love things with lots of pockets.

    1. It was probably just the pic on my computer. It still looks great without the pocket. I do love hidey places! However, it just encourages me to carry more stuff around. 🙂 It was hard to tell how small the new ones were. I guess I just assumed they were close to the size of the book covers. Nice job!

    2. Thanks 🙂
With the clips you can still jam lots of stuff in!

  2. Denim makes a wonderful cover. It is more sturdy than most fabrics. And we all love that frayed look that it gives. Really nice. Because of cataracts, I have trouble with some colored prints on dark backgrounds. Or those neon colors just run together. So, I can identify.

    1. Yeah, I probably should have bought denim needles for my machine first 🙂
Dark backgrounds give me trouble too.

  3. Love your denim notebooks 🙂 I have a bag of denim scraps waiting, doubt they will turn into anything as wonderful. You have made good use of that sewing machine.
I am not a fan of the new flickr either, had not herd of ipernity, will have to check it out.

    1. Thanks, Jane 🙂
Heh, I really have put that poor machine through it a bit.

  4. I love your notebooks, I have a pile of denim bits leftover from bag making projects and am off to play right now. Thanks once again for sharing 🙂

    1. Thanks, Wendy 🙂
I’ll look forward to seeing what you make 🙂

  5. Love the notebooks Zed, is there any fabric, fibre, bits and bobs you dont have lol I dont like the new flickr either, it was a shock to my eyes to when i went in so i can only imagine the trouble you’d have with that. If we complain enough they might change it back ???

    1. Thanks, Kaz 🙂
A few years ago I gave almost all my fabric stash to a local school, thinking I’d never use it again! I’d forgotten I had the denim until I found a loose pocket and went to check if my bagful of offcuts were there 🙂
There have been tens of thousands of complaints to flickr, but they’re not interested, they want people uploading snaps from phones, and they’ll get revenue from advertisers, though why they don’t realise most people have adblock is baffling.

    1. Thanks, Ann 🙂
It’s probably the fabric most of us will have spare most of the time.
