Felted Flower Workshop

Felted Flower Workshop

You may remember I did a post about dyeing silk hankies for a workshop at Pinhey’s Point.  https://wp.me/p1WEqk-j91  Sunday was the class.

I was set up in what was originally the dining room of the house. It was a bit tight with 10 people around 2 tables,

But everyone did fine. Everyone kept thier elbows down and we had a great time.

First, we did a petunia/morning glory. More in general shape than reality.  This is a nice, simple flower for people who have never felted anything before. Not a great picture, but it was the only one I could find that I had uploaded before. I used to be terrible at naming my pictures. I am much better now. Makes it much easier to find what you’re looking for.

Once everyone had their flower done, we had a break. The museum provided a great snack table for our break. We all felt very spoiled.

Then we moved on to the silk hanky flower.  I explained about what they were and how they were made, and everyone had to pick a colour. It was so hard to choose.

They learned how to make the stems and the stamens for a more complete flower. Here they are doing the dry rolling to compact it before wetting.

Then it got busy, and I was running around the tables helping people. It is always tricky getting the stem and stamen centred on opposite sides. But everyone managed.  The biggest problem was with stems not sticking. We had 3 with stems totally detached and one partial detachment. I think it was a combination of felting the base of the stem too hard at first and pulling it away when moving the stem to a different position to rub the flower. All but one had felting needles at home with instructions on reattaching the stem after it’s dry. I gave a needle to the last person and explained how to use it to fix the small area that was not attached properly.

No more pictures until the end. All in all, a great day. Everyone seemed happy, and there are definitely some new addicts in the making.

I have no idea what the white spot is. It is on the original in my phone.

  1. You must have been exhausted running around those tables to keep all the students on track! However it was worth it as they all look very happy with their flowers.

Have you checked your camera lens for a tiny spot of moisture or dust?

Yes, lovely snack, very healthy … but did you wish you’d brought some butter tarts? 🙂

  2. Oh bother, I was hoping you were going to show us how you used the silk hankies in the making of the flowers. I’m still trying to work it out.
Your class obviously got the idea and are very happy with their results. I thought the morning glory/petunia was great, they are both flowers that I love (and I also love the bindweed flower – which is a white morning glory – though not when it has taken over my garden).

  3. It looks like a fun class even though a bit crowded into the space. Plus you had two men in the class, amazing 😉 Everyone looks happy with the results.

It looks to me like there was a mirror in the other room/hallway that looks like a white disc in the middle of the photo.

    1. Yes the 2 men were a surprise. They both seemed to enjoy themselves. I think there must be something very reflective out in the hall. It just looks so odd, like it happened in the developing but there is no more developing.

  4. Everyone, including the 2 men, look happy with their finished flowers. The fact that a couple of stems didn’t attach, means that your students actually learnt some extra tips in addition to your main instructions!

You certainly must have been exhausted working the tables in such a tight space.

Wow, you were amply supplied with a ‘healthy’ feast happily enhanced by the brownies and coffee!

Your spot – could it be light or sunlight….if you look to the centre above the door lintel, there appears to be a circular ‘hole’ within a timber frame that might be letting light through to a glass fronted picture (or mirror) on the opposite wall. Maybe if you revisit this venue you can check it out and come back with the answer!

    1. It was a tight space and I think I got my exercise going round and round. I will have a look at the spot when I return. I think we may do flowers again in the spring. They had 5 people on the waiting list. But they are almost ready to close for the season. As we got near the end of the class it was getting dim in the room. There isn’t much electric light and what there is, is yellow. Probably to give it a more authentic feel. But the spot does seem to line up with the window above the door bouncing of something across from it.

  5. Busy class Ann, and you have coped so well with all the demands of having a completed article by the end! They all look very satisfied with their flowers, I think you must have been exhausted. Excellent snacks. I agree with Antje about the white spot/light, sometimes little things on photos really can puzzle a person!
