Two samples finished and some Canadian Weather
Before talking about felt, I just wanted to share with our friends who have mild winters. It is March here in Central Canada, and there is very little snow left. But as I said, it’s March, and March is a fickle month. This is what I woke up to last Saturday.
March 29 snowfall.Followed by freezing rain overnight Sunday.
March 30, freezing rain on top of snow.Do not be feeling sorry for me. This is fairly normal here. We expect it, but I am envious of you sitting out in your gardens enjoying the spring flowers.
Now some felt. I finished up the pink sample for the book-resist workshop. I finished the pages 2 different ways just to show them. I think it might look nice with a light inside.
I made a second sample using a football shape. It is smaller.
The resist was fiddley to get out because I didn’t want a hole in it. So, didn’t want to cut a hole in the end.
After removing the resist, I sewed up the hole.
Stitching up the hole
Stitching after fulling. Here is how it looks finished. I am really pleased with it. The stitching was resistant to being pulled out, but I did get it out.
I may have to make another one. I may just have to stitch on this one. I have the wool ready for the next sample. I hope to have it done for you to see next time.

Wow Ann, so much snow. We are currently enjoying a week of sunshine with all the mid-spring flowers out (daffodils, tulips, hyacinths etc) plus all the trees are in blossom. That said we have been know to have snow, but nothing like you.
Your book resists have turned out well. Your ‘rugby’ ball started as 7in what was the finished size? It definitely reminds me of a seed.
I’m sure your students will have some fun getting their fingers around these resists 🤪 When is your course?
Xx
We are used to all the snow. I am sure Ruth gets much more than we do here. We had some rain, so it is all gone again.
I will have to remember not to call it a football shape when write about the shapes. It is well felted but it finished 6 inches long. Not a lot shorter but I did keep stretching it so that probably why.
I am not sure when I will have the course ready. I had been thinking of it as an in person class but I think an on line class will be good too. It will take a while. I want to make the samples then go back and make them again to take detailed pictures. I need to figure out some better lighting. I have lots of shadows at the moment.
I definitely couldn’t be doing with your weather Ann. I’m a hot house flower, I can’t stand it too cold, but not too hot either. It always seems strange to me that our weather is milder than yours as we are I think slightly nearer the North Pole than you are. The results of your frozen rain have appeared on the news over here.
I find your felted shapes fascinating, especially the rugby ball shaped one (our footballs are round!)
Looking forward to seeing how your next one turns out.
Ann
Hi we are used to the crazy weather. I hate being cold too. I have good coats and hats to keep we warm. I don’t know how you all live with the dampness in the UK. Your weather is milder because the winds come up from the warmer climates, then it goes up across the arctic and then down on to us and the jet stream goes up the the Arctic and drops down on us from the west. that probably more than you wanted to know. LOL
I really like the rugby ball shaped one too. I will have to remember to use that instead of football. I am hoping to have time to make another one this weekend.
It looks like your class ideas are coming along well. I hope you are able to make it into an online class as we really need some new ones.
We had snow yesterday (4/3) but it was less than an inch. They had 4 inches on the mountain and it’s sunny today. So it’s our last day of skiing today, hope the snow stays good 😉
It is coming along. I am joying working on it. I need to work on writing the next part, “week 2”. I hope your snow stayed long enough for you to get a few runs in.
Love the rugby ball – it’s a perfect seed pod and a gorgeous colour. The pink one is interesting having some sides flat and some hollow – but why am I thinking octopus?
Both samples are brilliant and are sure to inspire your students.
Yup – we’ve got 22C and wall to wall sunshine – just going out in the garden for a cuppa – not rubbing it in 🙂 Downside is that we haven’t had rain for a while and everything is parched.
Thanks, I really like that one too. the colour is from World Of Wool its called Antique. I was thinking more jellyfish, but I would puff them all up for that.
I am looking forward to 22c and sitting our under my apple trees.
Weather is amazing I think; I would not be happy to have snow now, and have the spring bulbs all buried in the white stuff!
I love the pink sample best, it looks amazing, and a little led light would be a magical present for a little girl.
I have pictures of my daffodils making buds and surrounded by snow, they went on to bloom. Some of the spring flowers are pretty tough.
Yes, I will have to try a light inside to see what it looks like.
I’m here looking out at a wonderful blue sky and my better half isout on the lawn mower – the land has woken up big time here Ann. I can’t imagine still having snow – March would be the latest we would get a little flutter – and then we would be talking about it for the rest of the year!
Love both takes on the book resist. I always love the way that the shape changes, depending on where the join is. The light inside the pink version will be magical. You might like to try nylon thread when sewing up, something I learned from Marjolein Dallinga at a workshop years ago when she came over to us from Canada. It doesn’t felt and it is easy to remove.

No green grass here yet. Even the sheep aren’t trying to escape to pasture yet. Yes, nylon is much easier to pull out. Unfortunately the thread was in the house and lazy me was in the studio. I am looking forward to trying some different shapes. I need to make a paper model for one, to see what would happen when I cut it. I don’t think it will work the way I want. Right after the 12 other things I want to do today.🤪
I loved to see your two samples, Ann. Both look magical and organic, so just what I love most!
Luckily you have colours to look at in your wool stash, with so much white still around in your landscape! I guess some snow is a wonderful novelty, but months of snow are maybe not for me!
Thank you. Yes winter is very magical at the beginning but not so much when it returns after all melting in the spring.
