Another Great Nuno Felt Class

Another Great Nuno Felt Class

Last weekend I had my last scheduled nuno felt class until the fall. I had 6 enthusiastic women attending and we had a great day.

Earlier in the week I died some more scarf blanks so everyone would have lots to choose from. I use the scrunch dye technique with MX/fiber reactive dye, from Paula Burch’s site. http://www.pburch.net/dyeing/lowwaterimmersion.shtml

Everyone had fun doing their layout and being creative with fibers. It always amazes me how different they all are.

Of course, there was always all the usual rubbing.

All in all, a wonderful day with wool and silk. Not quite as much fun as playing myself but still fun. I really like teaching and seeing the amazement on people’s faces when it really works.

  1. Looks like a really fun class, Ann, with a great variety of lovely results. Your students certainly look like they enjoyed it. Quick question, what size and type of silk scarves do you use?

    1. Thanks I always love to see what people do with design. they start out about 12 inches/30 cm wide and 6 feet/182cm long. So it fits on a 6 foot/182cm folding table.

  2. As you say, 6 people with 6 very different creative ideas for the layouts and all happy with their scarves 🙂

The combo that surprised is the blue/black/green/grey. The layout was very understated but the finished scarf is chic.

  3. Beautiful scarves, you have some wonderful colours for their scarf making fun. My favourite scarf is the last photo in your post.
How long are the pieces of silk for the scarf, and how much shorter are they when completed?

    1. Thanks, it is nice isn’t it. They start out about about 12 inches/30 cm wide and 6 feet/182cm long. So it fits on a 6 foot/182cm folding table. They shrink about 4 inches/10cm in width and 12 inches/30 in length. We control the shrinkage by laying the wool to shrink more in width then in length to keep them as long as possible.

  4. That is the great thing about teaching is seeing the students when they have created something awesome out of loose wool. It’s such a magical process to see when you first do it. Looks like you have a bunch of happy students with beautiful scarves.

  5. What lovely scarves, no wonder your ladies look so happy.
I agree that it is the wonder and excitement which happens for new students when they see what they have achieved that keeps us going back to teaching.
Do I see the ladies using Tupperware lids to rub their scarves? I wish I could remember what I did with mine, it was really handy.

  6. A fabulous collection of scarves, all so very different. Your students look delighted with their efforts and must have been amazed at how the finished piece changes from the initial

  7. Lovely job. I especially like the moody blue scarf. Well done students (and teacher).

  8. Wow Ann, your students had the most delightful colours in your silk scarves to inspire them. They certainly did not disappoint. I was so excited to see their layouts and their results are so beautiful. Lovely photo of a very happy group of students!
