May and June and the Moose Bag

May and June and the Moose Bag

The last time I showed you my May page, I just had a little to go.  Once I finished the stitching I cut away most of the stabilizer so I wouldn’t have to rinse it as much to get it all out of the felt.

colourful felt with stitching and wash away stabilizer

And this is it all done. It’s a bit sparse but I like it well enough.

Hand made felt with stitching. tulips, MOM, maple leaf and crown for Queen Victoria's birthday.

The tulips are for the tulip festival we have every year. Many are sent as a gift of thanks from the Netherlands.  The Dutch Royal family was in exile in Canada during WWII. We designated part of our hospital as part of the Netherlands so Princess Margriet would be born on home soil.

The maple leaf and crown are for Queen Victoria’s Birthday. She gave us self-governance so we have a holiday.

And of course Mother’s Day, at least here in North America.

I picked out a new piece of felt for my June page. I have some ideas for June. I was thinking I may do some more needle felting this month along with the stitching but I am not sure yet. I like the way the fiber goes across leaving lots of the white background showing.  I did this a long time ago but I am pretty sure the fibres are silk. The other thing I am not sure of is which way is up. the difference is more pronounced in person

The other thing I did was add some yarn to the antlers of my moose bag. I think it is all I will do. I like him the way he is. Not very ambitious but there you go.  I may add something to the other side of the bag. The yarn is handspun silk. I am not sure how well it will stand up to being on the bag.

  1. The May page isn’t sparse at all – it’s just right! The new colour background is apt as the month is often referred to as ‘flaming June’. The red yarn looks good on Mr Moose’s antlers 🙂

    1. Thanks Lynn. I like it better looking at the picture now. it ended up ans a nice pyramid. I hadn’t heard it called flaming June. I looked it up and its a painting. how odd is sounds more like you are cursing at June.

    2. Funny thing Ann – I didn’t know it was a painting! I was brought up to believe it referred to the lovely weather we usually get in June – often it’s the warmest and sunniest month. 🙂

  2. I love that Moose, whether or not he’s been added to as Jan does it, or just revealing how good a skein winder he makes.
It’s difficult to decide which way up your June page should go, but I think perhaps having the white bit showing at top right might be better. It really depends what you are going to add to it, so perhaps you could draw out what you are going to do and rehearse various positions and layouts?
I too think that your May page is just right. It doesn’t need to have anything else on it in my view.

    1. Thanks Ann, I like moose too. I do have some ides for June but haven’t decided how yet. I will have to do some sketches or play on the computer to see where to put things.

  3. Ann, your May page is just great as is and nicely balanced too. Thank you – I have learned some historical facts along the way about the Netherlands.

Your yarn winder is likewise good as is!

Your June background will provide you with various opportunities – it simply depends on how you want to represent June in stitch….I look forward to seeing your next calendar month creation.

    1. Thanks Antje. I am happier with May now I see it on here. Its made a nice pyramid. I am looking forward to seeing what I do with June too. School ends this month and I am looking forward to not having to get up so early and having more time.

  4. I did not know the Netherlands link with Canada. Thanks.
I like your stitching and the way that every motif has a connection.
The next sheet for June – I think the picture on the right is the ‘right way up’ – to me anyway!

    1. I am glad you learned something about the Netherlands. Especially with all the commemorative stuff going on right now. I think you maybe right about the correct way up. I like looking up what is special about each month before deciding to stitch it.

  5. Thanks for the history lesson, I didn’t know about the connection between the two countries either. Your May page looks great and I love the simple addition for your moose bag. I think either way will work for the June page but it will depend on your additions. I look forward to seeing what you do for June. (Hint – my birthday is in June) 😉

    1. Thanks Ruth. June is a popular moth for birthdays. It is my birthday and my daughters. I noticed 2 other members here have June birthdays too.

We would love to hear your thoughts!
