Wool Landscape with a Red Tree

Wool Landscape with a Red Tree

After finishing my embroidered tree, I needed a new idea for my next gallery piece. I took a look through my pile of sketchbooks and found a few options that might work for a wool “painting”.

I decided to use this watercolor painting for inspiration. Now to find the right colors to create this idea in wool.

Work table with variety of wool colors and hand carders ready to mix wool colors.

Here’s my work table with my wool choices ready to mix. I used the hand carders to mix up some “variegated” colors. I find that using a dyed wool that is solid really doesn’t look much like nature, especially the greens. The solid colors look really flat. Most of the wool I am using here is short fiber merino and it mixes very easily. I don’t card it completely so I have a mix of two to three colors in each little batt.

Here’s the colors I mixed up. I was thinking of using some orange locks on the tree but ended up not using them. The brown is pre yarn that I will use for the tree trunk. The plan is to do the majority of the scene with the wool and then add a few free motion machine stitched details.

Here’s the scene after laying out the wool. I can see why some people like to just cover this with glass and be done. It has such a wonderful texture and looks like real foliage.

Here is the piece after wet felting. The felting definitely flattens the scene. Now to decide where to add the stitch details. And not to over-do it. I always feel like I do a bit too much stitching on pieces. I’m planning on just adding some branches to the tree and a few light and dark highlights. But that’s for my next post.

  1. This definitely another great landscape in the making Ruth. To be honest, I’m not sure which I prefer at this stage, the “just laid out” or the felted one. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.

    1. Thanks Ann, I do like the “just laid out” look but not sure it’s practical even if you put it under glass. Next up, stitching.

  2. I like the tree the way it is, it is still very textured. I think its the green on the right is what needs more texture but I am looking forward to see what you do with stitching. It always amazes me. I do wonder sometimes if we are looking at our work to close. We need to step back and look at it. Like a lot of art work is not meant to be looked at from 2 feet away.

    1. Thanks Ann, the tree is looking pretty good but I’m just adding a few extra branches so I won’t change it much. I agree that the green on the right needs work so we’ll see how it comes out. There is a tendency to look at the work too close. It’s why I hang my pieces on the wall so I can stand back. The other way to look from a distance is through thumbnail photos.

  3. I love the colour combo, very autumnal vibe going on. It will be a gorgeous picture, and I’m looking forward to seeing the next episode.

    1. Thanks Marie! It is very autumnal, I tend to gravitate to that it seems but I have always loved autumn. We’ll see how the stitching goes.

    1. Thanks Karen, perhaps all those color studies and paint swatches have helped 😉 I’m hoping the stitching will be a good addition.

  4. I am very late to the party Ruth, apologies. Things have been a bit hectic since hubby’s 95 year old aunt fell and broke her wrist in March. She has no immediate family. she was finally discharged from the hospital last Friday so we are now endeavouring to settle into the ‘ne normal’. She is doing well.
I love that with wool fibre, that it can be mixed and by doing so, it’s possible to add so much character and life to the colour. I love what you are doing here and I suppose the joy of being a late comer is that I don’t have to wait for the next episode. I can already predict that this is going to be just gorgeous!

    1. Sorry to hear about your hubby’s aunt, Helene. I hope that she is better, is she living with you? Or nearby?

I too love that you can mix the wool and create a more natural look. It really helps with landscapes for sure 😉

    2. Thanks Ruth. She is an independent lady who has been so all her life. A great walker too so we hope she can get back to that. She lives about an hour away, given traffic etc. Care staff will call 3 times daily and we will be with her too.
