Samples for my Valentines class.

Samples for my Valentines class.

I was asked to give a Valentine-themed workshop, specifically hearts. No surprise there. This is a short evening class. I am teaching in person in Ottawa at my guild on Feb 7, 2024. https://www.ovwsg.com/events/event/2407-felted-hearts/I had no pictures to put with the workshop so I had to create something. I decided on heart-shaped baskets with rope handles.

I started by finding a heart shape on the internet and sizing it up to about 6 inches across. I decided to do one this size and one bigger to end up at 6 inches.

they will fit nicely onto my rolling mat. I need to keep an eye out for a bigger one of these. This one is supposed to be for drying dishes. It might do for one person for their lunch dishes.

I decided on one in red and one in this year’s Pantone colour of the year coral pink. The colour doesn’t show well wet but you will see it when it’s dry

Next was adding embellishments. Coral pink is one of my least favourite colours so I added some sari silk in the colour Salsa. It is primarily red with bits of other colour in it.

The red looked pretty plain so I added a pale pink heart

Next of course was all the rubbing and rolling and cutting it out and rubbing and rolling and fulling. The red one is now 6 inches across and the pink one is 4 inches across.

I rolled a couple of snakes for handles. The idea was to poke holes in the hearts to poke the snake ends through and tie a knot. the pink one was okay, but the red one wasn’t long enough so I just felted the ends in. Jan thinks they should have a bell on the tip but I am not sure. I think I will offer them to the student but I don’t think I will add them.

And here they are on Jan’s new photography backdrop which I am sure she will be telling you all about in a later post.

Tada!

I like the picture of the pink one best. The angle is good. The red one is more from over the top of the heart. The chocolate hugs are some Jan gave me as a librarian present. Perfect for a Valentine’s photo shoot.

  1. I love these Ann. Just think what great wedding favours they would make – you could go into business!
Regarding your rolling mat, many years ago I bought a couple plastic/rubber (not sure which) of car mats – black – the sort which sit in the foot well to keep the carpets clean and unworn. I got 2 for £1 in a Pound Shop. They had similar ridges to yours but were probably twice the size. Something to keep your eyes open for?

    1. I hadn’t thought of wedding favours. I think maybe a bit smaller though. Not sure I would want to make 200 of them. I have a couple of car mats that are bigger but they are also more aggressive. I do used them for fulling larger thicker things. Maybe If I find some cheap ones at a discount store they will be more like the dish mat.

  2. What a lovely Valentine’s bag! The size, shape and colours are perfect and the snake handle worked well. Maybe adding the bell is one step too far?

Ann’s idea of wedding favours is worth considering 🙂

Jan’s background looks good and the colour would enhance most items.

    1. Thanks, I think I will give them the option of a bell if they want it. I don’t think I will go in to the wedding favour biz. Besides making hundreds being boring I don’t think I want to deal with stressed out brides.
the back grounds are good . I just bot mine and I think Jan got some more so we will have to do another photo shoot.

  3. Nice project for a Valentine class and I particularly like how the coral pink has turned out with those added fibres. I’m in the “no bells” camp too. They look finished to me as they are.

    1. I hope the class gets enough people to sign up. We have a lot of great classes at the guild this year its hard to pick. I was pleased with the way the pink one turned out too. The coral worked fine as a base colour.

  4. Your heart bags are really cute Ann. I’m with you on not dealing with brides or making hundreds of the same item – you would see me run screaming loudly. 🙂 Pink is not my favorite color but I think the pink one is more interesting with the sari silk fiber added. Your handle solution looks better than the idea of the tied knots. More work, but better end result. The new photo backdrop does show the wool off nicely. It looks like it has a matte finish??

    1. Thanks Ruth. I like the pink knot handle better than the other. I think I might have liked the red attachment if I had felted them in from the beginning. I will let them decide which they would like to do.
The backdrops are matte. I did see one with solid colours that had the option of matte or shiny and another that was double sided, with one shiny and one matte. I think mat is best for us. Its hard enough without having the shine bouncing back too.

  5. Looks Grate!!! Have you forgiven me for suggesting you do wet felted harts for valintines day? at least i didnt suggest anitomical 4 chambered harts just think of the book resist that would need!!! i am glad you enjoyed the chockolets but i thot you might save a few to show your class.
the next set of backgrounds came. i have to design a way to store them flat rather than rolled. i am thinking foam core, coroplast or masonite with a hinge and probubly elastic straps.
PS you can always put the bell in with the chocklets so you know if anyone is sneeking into them?

  6. What a sweet idea!💞 I agree with the others about wedding favors, but shower favors might work well. You could suggest your class participants have a look in their button boxes, for a decorative connector option. I have so many buttons, I have been looking for ways to use them!

I never thought of using a rubber kitchen mat for rolling: genius idea! I have some solid shelf lining could work in a pinch for larger projects? (I have occasionally wondered what fiber would do if left to its own tendencies with a piece of that hole-y stuff) 🤔 I guess you could use it for a mini upwolfing project? 😉

    Enjoy your class, Ann.

  7. These are so sweet (get it!) Ann. I think they are a lovely for a workshop and your students will be delighted with the results. I know you mentioned that you are not a fan of the colour coral but the additional embellishments takes the surface with a different level.
Now I want to drop everything, fly over and take the class.
    Have fun!
    Helene
