Nuno and Almost Flower Brooches
Now that I have the multi nuno sample pieces I made, and have some reference for how a lot of my fabric pieces felt, I thought I’d sort out some pieces to use. I’ve got quite a few pieces cut or torn, in various sizes and made a start with a piece of a woven pink scarf I got from a charity shop. I always put far too much effort into choosing the colours to go with the fabrics, you can’t tell, but the felt under the scarf actually has 3 different shades of pink, plus a few wisps of turquoisey blue:
I thought the pink scarf and this next piece would make nice coin purses, though I’ll probably use just a plain piece of felt for the inside section of the coin purse. This is a piece from a spearminty peacock scarf:
It has great ripples, this is a closer view:
I made a start on a few flower brooches, I was trying out some buttons:
I never did get around to making new fimo buttons, so I might have to look in my button box. I like how this flower turned out, I tried hard to get it thin and also wispy on the edges:
This one was made using a batt I blended from the Botany lap waste I mentioned last time, I blended the pale pinky lilac with some of the grey, it made a kind of pale lilac/lavender. I added a few wisps of lemon and tussah silk.
I have a feeling it’s going to be hard to find a button to match that!

I agree – the colours you lay under the fabric need to be carefully chosen.
The pink is pretty and I love the ripples on the blue.
The flowers are great! I really like the thin, wispy effect.
You’re going to have to get your Fimo out I think to make special buttons for your felt pieces.
Thanks, Lyn 🙂
If we get some cooler days, I might get the fimo out, in this heat though, it will be impossible to play with! One of the felters at the wll being centre made a gorgeous felt button today over a real one, I might give that a try.
That’s a good idea Zed.
I love the peacock piece. Great colors and texture. Why not make a clay button for the last flower?
Thanks, Marilyn 🙂 Clay clay or fimo clay? I did have some air hardening modelling clay a while ago, but it could be anywhere!
Great pieces of nuno Zed, they’ll make nice pouches. I agree with the comment on Facebook, I think a Mother of Pearl button would be perfect.
Thanks, Ruth 🙂
Yeah, that was a great idea wasn’t it? I hope I have something, all I can think of is some fake plastic ones though.
I really like your peacock piece. Top stitching or beads would look interesting on the flower brooches.
Thanks, Marylou 🙂
I hadn’t thought of beads either, I have tons of them. I can see a mess of beads and buttons in the near future!
Great pieces. If it was me I think I would go for an opposite colour in the last flower but a cluster of beads would be nice too.
Thanks, Ann 🙂
I hadn’t thought of opposite colours either, I’ve got a lot more options now!
Nice nuno pieces and flowers! Over the weekend I actually felt brave enough to start playing with the gorgeous blended batts and some of the fabrics I got from you. So now I have a number of very colourful felt pieces that I plan to turn into cuffs/bracelets. Just need to decide on buttons… 😉
Thanks, Zara 🙂
I was wondering about making some cuffs too, I’ve only done a few. I’m looking forward to seeing your pieces 🙂
Very pretty!
Thanks, Matthew 🙂
