When good marketing backfires
Since I sort of stumbled upon the career of Indie Dyer of Yarns and Fibres pretty much by accident, I never imagined how much time I’d be spending on wool festivals unable to peruse or purchase a single item. Frankly, it’s both refreshing (no money spent, yay!) and a bit weird (all that temptation just out of reach).
As a vendor, I obviously have my setup prepped in a way that will hopefully entice buyers. I also need people to remember who I am among the sea of other sellers, so I got myself a decently-sized banner at eye level. I’m a smart cookie, I think to myself. Well done, me.
Then I take it a step further to really make sure people can see me from a distance. I decide to start wearing yellow – it’s easy to spot, and I bet there aren’t manny people looking like a hyper lemon at festivals (or anywhere else for that manner). I go all out, even my glasses are yellow!
Marketing-wise, that’s sort of when I proverbially shot myself on the foot. My garbs got so popular that I started being known not as Eleanor Shadow but as The Yellow Lady! Drat…

I actually had to change some of my website’s text to include “also known as The Yellow Lady” so the search engines could pick it up!
Since I brought this upon myself, I have now embraced it to the point of just having finished a new pinafore to wear when I’m vending. Do we like?

Lots of pockets, easy to spot from afar, job done! I’m pretty chuffed to be debuting this in Inverness in a couple of weeks.
The yellowness has stuck so much that on the rare occasion I visit a festival as a buyer, people ask me why I’m wearing black. For those not in the know, I’m a goth. Ah, the irony.
What’s the most outrageous garment you have in your closet (that you’re happy to share)? 😉 Let me know in the comments section.

That’s too funny Leonor! I love the “Yellow Lady” marketing.
It is making me rethink my drab farmer blue jeans and t-shirts.
When in doubt, go Outrageous! 😀
Very clever – very eye catching! The new pinafore and crocs look better than the dungarees and give you more acreage, i.e legs, upon which to display goth colours 🙂
The bib area would look good with your name and logo on it? In black of course.
Good luck with Inverness – let us know how you think the new look worked.
We don’t have any outrageous things in our wardrobe – the closest we could get to outrageous would be the Carmen Miranda hat Annie wore.

Thanks! I really like the pinafore and it will definitely help me use the bathroom better and quicker…
A friend is making me a few magnetic name tags, so I’ve left the garment bare on purpose! It shall be filled with pins (one of which helpfully says “neurodivergent” so people know what to expect 😉 )
I hope Inverness works out, it’s a brand new show! Fingers crossed.
Love the Carmen Miranda hat! Now all Annie needs is the bikini 😀 (Btw, did you know she was Portuguese?)
No – didn’t know she was Portuguese! Yes, bathroom will be easier with pinafore for sure.
What yummy stuff you’ve got on your stall Leonor.
The pinafore looks great and I agree with Lyn, you should have your logo on the bib.
Nothing much outrageous in my wardrobe, but I have been seen in our street dressed as a parrot and also as a black poodle, thanks to SNADS’ wardrobe. 🤪
Ann
Thanks for your kind words, my stall is an ever-evolving WIP but I’m really happy about my progress 😀 Who knew I’d ever be organised enough to have a full stall?
I’m not adding any ID on the pinafore on purpose, I’ll have some magnetic badges with my name and pronouns made up soon! This way I can also eventually wear it when I’m out and about (although this might be a tad too er, yellow for daily use…)
A parrot and a black poodle in the street? PHOTOS! 😀
Love the yellow. Your pinifore with all those pockets is just what everyone needs, I have an outrageous bright sun yellow summer dress that I wear for dyeing in the summer. It has spots of other colours now. I have the most boring crocks in the world, they are khaki brown. I would not do a show without them. They are the best when on your feet all day. You need one of Jan’s needle felted name tags. I hope you have a great show.
Thanks, Ann! Yellow is such a balm in a world of beige 🙂
I’ll be honest, I disliked crocs on principle when I saw them for the first time, and flatly refused to ever think of wearing them for years… until my other half bought a pair of his own and wouldn’t shut up about them. Now I’m a convert!
Jaaaaan, Ann says, I need one of your tags! Hint, hint, nudge nudge 😀
That made me laugh, Leonor. Canary yellow is not at all how I picture you. It certainly is eye catching so I think your marketing has paid off. And your stand looks wonderful. So many gorgeous things and beautifully presented.
I’m not big on outrageous outfits though I did buy a rather striking second hand, full length, padded shouldered black leather coat when I was in New York last autumn. It’s lovely leather (a little scuffed) and was only $25 so I couldn’t resist it. Now I just need to find the opportunity (or maybe the courage) to wear it.
I know, right?! People who know me from “the normal world” are flabbergasted when they see me in yellow, it’s hilarious 😀
Thanks for the kind words about my stand, it’s a constant work in progress but I love where I am right now.
Lindsay, are we swapping roles? A full-length leather jacket sounds just like the thing I’d wear. I’m super glad you got it, $25 is a steal! Now plan an outing and take it with you, take some pics and share them with us 😀
OOOO Leonor, I hav just laughed so much! As Bob Ross would have said, a happy little accident. Believe me, it will pay off and I suspect all the other vendors are kicking themselves that they did not think of it first. Love the video – there’s a lot of hard work gone into your display and your wares, best of luck in Inverness.
The dyslexia in me misread Lyn and Annies comments and what I saw was that the pinafore would give you more cleavage (it read ‘more acreage’). I love the pinafore and the idea of adding the pins. I also love the colour choice, yellow is one of those colours that puts a smile on everyne’s face and, if that means increased sales ….. excellent choice madam.
By the way, thanks for fixing Mary up. I sent her over a few of your locks for a course she is doing and told her all about you in the process. Lovely woman.
Now for outragious outfits. I’m gone very boring these days but I have sewn some interesting pieces when I used sew for the burlesque community. But that’s another story.

Glad I made you laugh! What are we for, if not amusement for our friends? 😀
A couple vendors have indeed already told me they were sorry they hadn’t thought about this, so I’m patting myself on the back for my cleverness. I should trademark it!
Haha, more cleavage?! I sure don’t need any more help in that department, thank you very much! Thanks for the laugh.
No, thank *you* for telling Mary about me! Her custom dyed locks are drying as I write this, everything should be on its merry way to her on Monday. She sounds lovely indeed and I hope she loves her purchase.
I now desperately want to see burlesque outfit photos!! xx
Great idea – you can always look for Goth pins for your pinafore – or wear a tiny little bit of yellow on your Goth outfits – good luck. BTW your booth looks Awesome!
Thanks, Pat! I often wear dark blue lipstick when I’m vending, so that already gives people a hint that I’m not just The Yellow Lady… My favourite makeup story however, is of one lovely girl I met in full goth makeup during a show, I asked her about her favourite band and she was only into pop! I was so confused, haha.
Thanks for your lovely words about my booth, it means a lot! 😀
Wow a canary yellow Goth….that is definitely unique & so you. Brilliant marketing indeed and yellow is a happy sunshine colour….so hopefully it will be reflected in your sales. Good luck in Inverness. Visitors will be reeled in to your awesome set-up spoilt for choice. I
Your pinafore is so practical in every sense & should you ever have an opportunity to buy at a venue, will easily allow you to revert to incognito black.
Nothing too outrageous in my wardrobe although as a student I wore a men’s satin stripe dinner suit to a London event. Unfortunately 4 weeks later Diane repeated my attire! Sadly I could never wear it again as it was no longer unique & I would be ‘copying’. I was lucky that many folk knew, and actually acknowledged, that I had set the trend 🤪
Don’t say Canary Yellow Goth too often or I’ll have to change my website’s keywords again 😀
It’s indeed a fun colour and you bet people really can see me from a distance. It helps with sales for sure! Hopefully that’ll also happen in Invernerness.
I’m loving how the pinafore came out. I’ve since added a tiny tab to a corner of the top pocket, that’ll allow me to clip a tiny project bag if I ever feel like knitting whilst vending. Let’s see if I’ll ever make use of it…
Diane stole your idea, how unfair! I bet you looked both gorgeous and dapper in that suit xx
I love the yellow outfits, and your dungarees are lovely. I made my daughter a pair of yellow linen capri style pants in 2023 (just checked year), she still wears them!
Yellow makes the heart happy! I’m super happy your daughter has a pair of yellow trousers, I made my mum and I matching ones too (in yellow and black, are you surprised?!) 😀
Great marketing and your yellow gives you just the “pop’ you need. Glad it’s working for you 😁
