2025 Spencerville Fiber Festival

2025 Spencerville Fiber Festival

Yes, I think it’s spring, or at least a good attempt at spring.  We have had thunderstorms, loss of hydro overnight, more rain, the daffodils have joined the crocus, scilla and lungwort and now the trees are budding! Even the portable forest has started its spring migration! (it’s sneaking a pot or two across the driveway, finally arriving in its summer location.)

In the yearly calendar of fibre festivals near Ottawa, we have had in February, the Chesterville spin in, which is a fun, small event to help get us through the remains of winter and top up our fibre hoards, if they have started to dwindle. In April, the Peterborough Weavers Guild holds a large fibre festival that is about a 3-hour drive away from Ottawa, but is worth the trip. This year, I was out of commission for both of these and was very disappointed not seeing fibre friends or topping up the fibre hoard.

The third fibre festival this year was in Spencerville, a small town well south of Ottawa, almost to Highway 401. It’s in the Drummond building, so we will meet you there.

Glenn grabbed the book he was reading, and we headed off.  It usually feels like not that long a drive, but this year the seat belt and one of my incisions were arguing loudly by about 20 minutes out and just got more livid with each other the farther I drove. I also think they moved the town further down the highway, it seemed so much longer a drive than I remember. (Good thing I didn’t try to go to Peterborough)

We arrived early and found that there were already a few cars with people waiting to go in. As Glenn pulled out my walker and camera, everyone else got out of their cars, and we all headed in to line up inside.  (I was more interested in the washroom.) This is not a big hall, but the sale had a good selection of finished goods, equipment, Yarn and fibre. There were also demo tables from the Kingston Weavers Guild and the Knitters Guild. Most of the aisles accommodated stopping and chatting with friends you haven’t seen in months, but still not blocking getting into the booths.

3 Let’s pay our $5.00 entrance fee and head in to see what the vendors have brought for us this year.

4.1- As we entered the hall

4.2 Luna Spinning has woodworking, spun yarn, fibre and crochet tools

4.3 Janet Whittam does weaving and basketry, you may remember her work from other shows too!

4.4 This was Krys Dallaire’s first time selling and had a very nice booth. She was selling Ile de France cross North Country Cheviot (close up showing crimp), Bluefaced Leicester cross North Country Cheviot (the bag being purchased), Fin (the dark fleece that came home with me) and North Country Cheviot (bags on the shelves). She was also selling maple syrup!!

4.5 Yvieknits Yarn had lots of yarn and a bit of fibre; she also had these lovely examples of knitting with her yarn.

4.6  You have seen Top of the Whorl spindle at a few past festivals too. They had some new spindles, spindle cases and lazy Kates for spindles. This is also where I found Naalbinding needles.

5 at the Top of the Whorl, a drop spindle lesson was happening.

There was a vendor selling punch tools,  including a couple of images set up as a “Try Me” sample. Ann, Carlene and I all tried it, I wonder if either will add a new fibre art to all they do?

6.1-6.3 Ann and Carlene try the sample. The loops are created on the back of the side you are working on. The different punch tools make different-sized loops. It was a bit like needle felting but with less need for band-aids.

7 Ann was interested in the rug hooking techniques, which gave a lot of textural elements depending on what was used with the rug hook.

Let’s keep looking around, ooh, do you see this hiding on the floor in the next booth?  It is mostly yarn but has some wool wash, wool pellets for the garden and plastic project bags, but hidden beside the table was a lovely fleece.

8 It’s labelled as a fleece of Gotland Finn Cross, it was so soft to touch, I was very tempted.

Let’s keep going (before I buy it without seeing all the show)

9.1- I missed the name of this booth, but it had a mix of tools and supplies for weaving, felting, and knitting. Ann seemed very interested in the knitting pattern cards. I wonder if we could do that for felting? Maybe shapes of resists or book resists for the wet felters?

9.2 Pretty String Yarn Co., lots of colours to entice you into knitting

9.3 Sheeps Ahoy. They have the most beautiful patterns that remind me of Philosophers wool who closed many years ago. I wish I could knit

9.4 Crazy about yarn, they use themes to create their Colour ways.  I think the purple was one of the galaxies, and the ones behind her are part of the planets series.

9.5 Studio De laine Cactus Yarn Studio, did you see the support chicken kits? She always has such interesting packaging.

10 We spotted Carlene and compared loot. We also saw a few others who showed off their finds.

There was a nice mix of things for sale, it was nice to see the new vendor with 3 different breeds of sheep. I had been hoping for the Lady who had the 3-D printed spindles at the Almonte fibre festival, but no luck on those. They’re not as pretty as the ones from the top of the whorl, but I would not want to leave one of their pretty ones in the back of the car for emergency spinning, but the 3-D printed one would work perfectly for that. Each spindle has its purpose, or just because it’s pretty and you really like it! That’s a good reason to get another spindle, too.

By early afternoon, I was wiped, and it was time to head home. Last year, we had seen the mill by the river, and I wanted to stop and take a few shots before the long drive home. I was captivated by the reflection in the river and the architecture when something large swooped past my camera.

11 Reflection of the barn in the river water

We drove around the mill building to see what it was.

12.1 Great Blue Heron waiting for lunch to come over the dam and be delivered to him or her.

12.2 Heron, waiting to select the entrée to dinner.

12.3 Spencerville Mill, the Heron is in front of the trees on the other side of the river, just left of the concrete at the far end of the dam.

We stopped in Kempville to have a very late lunch, and so I could take my meds. We finally got home and brought in my bags of loot! 5 paper bags and one big plastic bag. Yes, someone else bought the grey Gotland/fine,  but one of the black fin fleeces followed me home, it was just too nice and soft not to buy it! She said she will be shearing soon, in case you desperately need one too!

13.1 My purchases that followed me home.

13.2-13.3 It was definitely a fibre-focused shopping day, and there seems to be some similarities in colours too. I was trying to push out of my comfort blue, but seem to have only shifted over one to mainly green with a bit of red/orange and of course blue.

So what did or would you have gotten today? I probably overdid it, I am extra achy and about to face plant the keyboard, but it was so much fun to see everyone and add more fibre options to my hoard. But now it’s time to crawl back into bed in hopes I will be able to make it to the guild meeting on Monday. If you are in the area next year, you might want to add the Spencerville fibre festival (The Forecast Calls for Yarn and Fiber)  to your places to visit. I will hope to see you there!

PS Monday, I made it into the guild and opened the library, I even got some work done, but didn’t last all the way to the meeting. I am wiped and quite sore. I am heading to bed now. I hope you have enjoyed this shopping trip! If you saw anything that you really want to track down, check with the event organiser. I fear I may have missed a booth, but I really am too tired to figure that out, so before I do face plant the keyboard, it is off to bed. Have fun and keep felting… maybe a heron?

  1. What a fabulous show – it would be impossible to come away without buying! Your haul looks fab – delicious colours. The Mill is in a beautiful setting that’s so calming.

Your photo of the heron reminded me of when my husband had a koi pond and he saw a heron flying off with one of his large koi in his beak. That was an expensive fish supper – can you imagine the language I heard ?

    1. Thank you both! it was a fun show and so many tempting things. i do think i over did it since i am still sorer than before i went, but it was worth it. it was so nice to see everyone too. i hope you enjoyed the vertual shopping! (its cheeper than actual shopping).
i remebered the mill from the last time we went and hoped to get a cuple good shots of the water and the mill. i did not expect the Heron. i wish he had been a little closer but i maxed out the zoom on my camera and got a few shots.

OH my, stolen Koi? quite a few years ago, it was a lovey sunny spring day with birds in the sky. i walked out of a grocery store into their parking lot and had a koi drop at my feet out of the blue sky. i had thot it had been stolen from one of the local ponds in Kanata, but now i feer it may have been your husbands missing fish!!
i grabed up the poor fish and rushed him to the car. i found a water bottle and a plastic tub which i quickly put him in. when i got home, we pulled out the old cat TV (a small aquarium), set it up and got the poor fish in. he was very stress and had wonds on his side. after a few weeks he was looking much better, and seemed quite healthy. unfortnatly the cats had also noticed there was a new program on the Cat TV. Someone tryed to change the chanal by unpluging the air pump. it did not go well for the fish. i am so sorry.

  2. It looks like you had a good time/got a good haul despite overdoing it. I love seeing herons like that one. It’s great to catch them on their fishing expeditions. And the koi stories are interesting.

    1. Yes Ruth it was fun and i think worth the increesed grumbling afterwords. (i am still suspisous that they moved the town farther down the high way than it use to be!) there was a lot to see i hope Carlene will show us her loot, She had 3 big bags when we saw her!
it was a wonderfull suprize to see the heron. growing up there was at least one on the lake at my parents cottage. he was lovely to see but we had to cleen up the dock often after his visits (our dock was not a public bathroom, i should have put up a pictogram for him!)
i had no idea Koi could fly! dropping out of the sky like that was probubly quite a supirze for both of us.

  3. Thanks for the shopping trip Jan, lots to see and drool over.
Luna Spinning’s turned wood thingys looked interesting, and so did their yarns. I loved those beautiful Top of the Whorl spindles, both the painted whorls and the ceramic whorls shown a bit further down (at least that’s what they looked like, though I suppose they may have been support bowls).
Card Decks for felters sounds a good idea for us to have a go at – hmmmm – puts on thinking cap!!
Pretty String Yarns – those blue/green/mauve skeins look mouthwatering; as do the red/purple balls from De laine Cactus Yarn Studio, and the dark skeins that Carlene had bagged.
Definitely time to turn for home by then – had I been there I’d have had my arms full too.
What a surprise to be photo bombed by a heron – one of my favourite birds. I did a couple of needle painted herons before I found felting. I have promised myself to needlefelt one one day fairly soon (it’s on the list).
I hope that you’ll soon get over the day out and the driving. I should think that just looking at your haul of goodies should help with that.
    Ann

    1. Your welcome, i hope you can join me on another shopping tip soon. Furgus fiber festival is on the 31st of May, i have never been to Fugus! Cangames (and felting) convention is in 2 weeks i wonder if there will be any other felters at Cangames this year? and what will i work on?

Luna ussualy has some amazing spinning boles this odd pice of wood was very captivating, i am not sure it would work as well with the natural edges but it would hold quite a bit of candy for you while you spun or knit!
Top of the whirl had Ceramic support spindles and small boles to hold them. the long tubes were for holding your support spindles some fiber and it had the bole in the lid to spin in. fabulous travel idea.

      i am looking forword to seeing what you come up with for us with the card idea! maybee you could make a set for Fiber Poker, pull a card for each catagory;
      1) types of fiber (include angora or only use fibers from local sheep, include pet fur),
      2) colour (monocromatic, inclued red, use only black and white, natureal colours only, use your favorite colour)
      3) a spicific techneque (use a resist, cracked mud teckneek, include an armature), and
      4) an other cattagory (like adds beeds, or use fethers, incude found object, inclued yarn).
its a good way to stimulate creativity if you are stump for where to start. we would pull 4 and then could repull one especialy if you got conflicting instructions or you realy hated one card.
it was a good show and i was tempeted by the yarn too, but realy i am no good at knitting. i am still working on Naalbinding and it was lots of fun! only one needle to keep track of!
the heron was a suprize! i wish he was closer but he seemed to have a dinner reservation on the other side of the river. i maxed out my zoom to sneek up on him!
its wednesday now and i am still getting stabs but not as lowd as monday so we are going the rite direction! i am not shure if i am going to make it to all 3 days of Cangames but its not too far away in Ottawa and i will bring a table and my walker so not so much standing and walking around. hummm maybe if i start makeing miss mer a boyfrend she will stop hiding and reapear? or maybe more picture felting? or maybe some spinning a cuple of those new braids are just begging to be spun!

  4. Thank you for taking me along to that wonderful show. Gorgeous wool, and I love the knitting that was on display. I learned to knit when I was young, and mainly did Aran patterns, but not done very much lately. I have to ask – what is a support chicken? Just seems so odd.
I really enjoyed reading this post.

    1. OH Marie i am so envious of your knitting skills! i keep trying and failing. brain and hands just wont agree which way i am to wrap the yarn around the needles. there were some very nice fleeces and all that colourfull yarn! it was tempting me to try again! (or get back to weaving)
ah, the chikens. i started seeing them a few years ago. they are Emotional Suport Chickens. they are easyer to travel with than a more animated type of Chiken. i understand the live ones are a real thing for emotional suport animals? but the knit ones are better travelers and dont have to cleened up after. i think i would like an emotional suport dinosore. but chickens are desendents so i gess thats close.
i am hopeing to go to a new show to me in Furgus, at the end of the month, we can see what its like together!

  5. A happy post Ann that I enjoyed reading. I’m so glad that you are now getting out albeit you are sore (try using a cushion between seat belt and delicate areas….it worked for me, as it literally cushions everything!)

Amazing items on display, I’m surprised you didn’t walk away with more! BTW thanks for the virtual tour….you saved me a bundle 🤪

Great camera shot of the blue heron. It must have been quite a surprise went it shot past.

    Xx

    1. Thank Antje, it was a fun day. i got home drop stuff on the bed and climed in beside it shure i would photograph it all in just a moment….. i woke up and the sun was leaving. i slept most of sunday too, jsut getting up to write bits of the post then back to bed. my life is very exciting! i took my loot in to photo graph and for show and tell for the meeting but by about 4 i was fading i made it untill Ann arived then headed home. i am going to make it all the way to a meeting yet. lets try next month!

Yes vertual shopping is a lot cheeper than actual shopping. i spent hours looking at an old sears robuck cataloge at my grandparents, giving myself a buget and seeing what i could buy. i am sure Glenn would have got the expencive blacksmith starter set for 17.00!!(anvil, leg vice, drill, forge and tools) i remember seeing that, but i dont think it was on my lists.

i missed the fly through shot!! if only i was quicker or had bot the newer camera with the multiple picture option. mine is over 10 years old now and there are some new features that would be fun and helpful. i tend to shot foto documentation type shots but landscape and wildlife are fun too. at school i love the macro/zoom lens and took a lot of very close up shots, textures of bricks, werd artsy stuff! my present camera cant get as close as i want i have to crop from farther back. but it still take prity good pictures.

i am so glad you enjoyed the shopping trip, i will envite you to Cangames (you can be the second felter or just go and enjoy the various board or table games, the chariot race is lots of fun but remember to slow down on the corners!) i am not at all sure what to expect at Furgus but there are promises of men in kilts too so it should be fun!

  6. Very envious of your fibre trip, Jan. I’m sure I would have emptied the piggy bank (and then some) if I’d been there. I’m glad you were able to enjoy it too, even though it took a while to recover. I look forward to our next trip (though can’t deny that I prefer actual to virtual shopping!)

    Great heron picture too.

    1. Thanks Lindsay! i am sure we can fit a lot of vertual people in my poor little car. i am hopeing to go to can games on the long weekend, then Furgus ontario at the end of the month. you are rite, vertual fiber dose not spin or felt as well as acutal fiber but its still fun to look at.
i am going to investigate a new cammera so i hope for even better pictures soon. the Heron was a suprize, i wasnt sure what had flown through the shot but it looked big and swooped quickly.

  7. What a lovely show it seems to have been! I miss going to one where I’m not working 🙂 Have you started processing the new fleece you bought?
