Playing with Book Pages
I have been playing around with different techniques and creating a few book pages for the book I’m repurposing that I showed you here. This is another book that will be added to over a long period of time and these pages may change as I go along or might stay the same. Who knows? I’m going to make a bunch of pages and then put them together at some point. Some might not get used or torn up and used on something else. It is a fluid type process that is ongoing.
Our play with alcohol ink left me with pieces of colored tape to use and so I taped them down to a page spread from the repurposed book. You can still see most of the page underneath and it gives an interesting. Very shiny though, which isn’t my favorite look. It seems a bit overwhelming all on one page so this might get cut up into smaller pieces but for now, I left it as is.
I had gotten a free trial from Golden paints of Light Dimensional Ground that I wanted to try. I painted it on the book page first and then added some different natural inks over top of it. The ground is supposed to be used to be a surface for watercolor paints on surfaces that don’t accept watercolor paint well. It is clear when dry and gives a bit rougher surface than regular paper. It worked well with the ink as it didn’t soak into the paper the same way it usually would. Then I added some other pieces of collage and a small painting on a ledger page.
This is just one page as opposed to a spread. This page is gessoed first then painted with acrylic and ink. Next I printed with a small stamp that reminds me of tree rings and added another small ledger painting.
This last spread has the undercoating of Light Dimensional Ground and then ink. On the right page, I added a couple of layers of painted tissue that was part of our mark making session.
You might notice that I am sticking to a color scheme this time, more neutral than my last book. Sticking to the tree theme though, I can’t seem to help that. It’s my favorite subject if you couldn’t tell.

Ruth your pages are looking interesting and if placed anonymously in a pile I would know the owner 😜
As our group’s challenge this year is to alter a book, something I find hard to let myself go with, I will take encouragement from your lovely free flowing efforts.
Xx
Thanks Antje, altering books is fun once you get used to injuring the book. Find a book that is already falling apart and it’s easier. Have fun!
Trees are a great subject and one of Annie’s favourites too 🙂 I quite like the ‘overwhelming’ page but I can see that it doesn’t really fit with the style of the rest so it’ll be interesting to see how you deal with it. The pages are very attractive so far.
Thanks, yes Annie and I definitely love the same subject. It’s interesting to see our different takes on the same ideas.
This looks an interesting project Ruth. It’s nice to have a piece you can dip in and out of as the inspiration grabs you. Looking forward to seeing more pages.
Thanks Karen, I do like to have an ongoing project that is easy to pick up and put down. And with a recurring theme, I don’t have to think too hard 🤪
Absolutely love the idea! Such a great way to let your creative juices flow from page to page. 😃
Thanks, it is a fun way to get creativity going.
It looks really interesting. so may different way to make marks. But I have the same problem and Antje. Not sure I could paint or alter a book. Maybe an old textbook.
Thanks Ann, yes, everyone’s marks are different. Most of these old books are going to end up in a landfill so I figure making them into “art” is better than that.
I’d happily look at your tree-themed papers all day, Ruth. They’re beautiful!
Thanks Leonor, too bad you can’t drop by for a visit and you could see all my tree themed stuff at once 😜
These are very beautiful Ruth. I love that you work with nature’s colours too – they fit in perfectly with the book’s theme. I will need a lot of courage to alter a book for some reason. It is totally stupid. I have some books here that I saved from the skip in my husband’s aunt’s house. They have fallen to pieces (one is over 150 years old and is only part of a book) and I still recoil at the thoughts of touching it (even though I know it will be destined for a skip in years to come). How can I get over this?
Thanks Helene, I like the natural, neutral colors with old books too. Bright colors seem to be “too much”. The first book that I altered was an old reference book that was going to be thrown away. I guess I don’t have a very sentimental nature as it doesn’t really bother me since I know they would probably just go to the landfill. I figure art is better than waste. Start with a book that has no meaning to you at all and that’s falling apart. Once you find what you want to do with this type of book, then you can try books that are more “precious”. But it’s just like not using certain supplies in your stash because they are too precious or you don’t want to mess them up. Be brave and just do it!
You are so right Ruth. I have a torn edition of Punch cartoons. Might be the place to start (i’ll leave the first editions for another day lol) x
