2020 FOURTH QUARTER CHALLENGE
Here’s the final challenge of 2020 for felters, spinners, weavers, stitchers, knitters, crocheters and mixed media fibre artists …
… make an item for your home for the festive season!
It could be anything at all – practical or just decorative. Here are a few of the things we’ve made over the years.
These felt tree hangers were re-purposed, by adding a wire loop, from a previous decoration.
The star was made origami-style from a piece of fabric and the snowflake was crocheted then stiffened with equal amounts of pva and water.
This bunting was very quick and simple to make. The fabric flags were cut with pinking shears (no hemming) then pegged onto a length of string with mini-pegs.
We used fancy children’s socks, stuffing and oddments to make snowmen.
We’ve made festive felt artwork (some of which was used to print Christmas cards). ‘Rudolph’, pictured at the top of this post, is made from fabric with free motion stitching.
This ‘Partridge Sitting in his Pear Tree’ was made in the same way.
‘Figgy Pudding’ is wet-felted art embellished with hand stitching and beads.
This wet felted snowman, decorated with hand stitching, was going to be a Christmas card but he looked so good sitting on the hearth that’s where he stayed.
Who doesn’t have sweets around during the festive season? We thought it would be fun to make ‘Christmas Podding’ and ‘Sid the Snowman’ to keep our favourite chocolates in.
We always decorate the table at Christmas – something different every year – and one year we made placemats…
…and coasters…
A wet-felted tea cosy, that was plain on one side, was decorated for Christmas with yarn, a reindeer cut out of white pre-felt and needle-felting.
These machine embroidered organza crackers were made many, many moons ago. Apologies for the poor quality photo, but this was back in the day when we didn’t consider photos to be that important.
We hope you have lots of fun with this challenge!
Please post your photos on https://feltandfiberstudio.proboards.com/ in ‘Studio Challenges’.

I’ve actually spent the last couple of years making crochet snowflakes with the intention of giving them to our local museum shop to sell in December to raise funds. That’s out of the window now though, the museum and shop are so cramped I don’t know when (or even if) we’ll be able to open again. I’ll just have to put them on my own tree. I’ve been following some of the patterns in “100 snowflakes to crochet” by Caitlin Sainio.
I love your past creations, particularly the grumpy partridge! The teacosy is lovely, and the sweet “jars” will make fantastic Christmas presents. Ideas are beginning to bloom!
Thank you Ann.
As children at school, the best part of advent was making decorations and that feeling has never left us.
Whatever anyone makes for the festive season, it doesn’t have to be perfect – the fun is in the making and sharing.
We hope you enjoy this challenge!
If it’s possible, we’d love to see your snowflakes Ann.
Such beautiful, imaginative and joyful creations. These really made me smile on a very wet and dreary morning. I love them all but particularly the bird and pudding hanging decorations and the drinks coasters. I like your suggestion that Ann posts photos of her snowflakes – I’m sure many of us have made festive fibre things over the years and it would be fun if people posted these as well as newly made things on the forum.
Thank you Lindsay.
We’re hoping that this challenge will appeal to nearly everyone and why not post photos of old makes as well as new ones?
What a lovely idea for a challenge and a fabulous selection of your makes to inspire us on! It’s going to be fun seeing what folk come up with.
Thank you Karen.
We’re really looking forward to seeing the entries for this challenge and we’re confident that they will be inspirational for us all.
Very lovely items and examples of such creativity!
Thank you Carol.
With the shorter days and more time indoors now, getting creative and making stuff is good for you!
This should be fun. I should have time later in the quarter. Lots of time to think and be inspired.
Thank you Ann.
It should feel more like ‘play time’ than a challenge!
What a fabulous collection of fibre Christmas artefacts. Like members above I have my favourites too….then I look at them again and I see a different favourite for a different reason.
With your opening post line, my thoughts & ideas started….I could do….oh, there is a photo, well, I could do….they have done that, ok possibly….nope, they have done that too!
So with no ‘new’ ideas thus far and most of my previous advent makes not being fibre, my current status is….‘stumped’! So yes it will be a challenge. 🤔
Thank you Antje.
It doesn’t have to be a new idea for a seasonal make – how many Christmas robins have you seen? – just put your own style onto it.
This Christmas robin was made back in 2013

Your Robin is fab.
Love seeing these all together. I hope we get to see loads of good ideas for the holidays. I will post some soon.
Thank you Ruth.
We’re confident that there will be lots of photos posted so we can all swap ideas for stuff to make for our homes.
Tis the season! Great ideas!
Thank you Marilyn.
The makes don’t have to be complicated or time consuming either! And there are so many fibre mediums from which to choose.
