2024 THIRD QUARTER CHALLENGE

Hello Summer! Hello to wearing silly hats and enjoying Annie’s garden!
This quarter’s challenge is to capture the essence of summer in a textile representation. Realistic or abstract, large or small, practical or not, it’s a free choice.
Summer is a time to sit and enjoy the view;

to feel the sand between your toes;

to walk in the shade of trees in full leaf;

to dine al fresco on a warm evening;

to eat home grown fruit

and to bring summer indoors with garden flowers picked in July.

This little summer study, in felt and machine stitching with a little bit of acrylic paint, was done by Annie back in 2016 and was inspired by the bees buzzing around the chive plants on her patio.

To recap – the challenge is to make a textile piece that says ‘Summer’. Realistic or abstract, large or small, practical or not, it’s a free choice.
Please post your entries in the Studio Challenges section on the The Felting and Fiber Forum

Nice idea for a theme Lyn! One of the many things that sprung to mind when I read this is “dragonflies”. Did you know there are 17 species of Damselfly and 23 different Dragonflies native to the UK? I love to see them on my walk across the fields in the Summer and there have been some enormous ones recently.
I can feel a 3d mixed media piece coming on. It won’t be on the scale of the wonderful Mr Finch but certainly big enough to get noticed on my wall!
Funny you should say that Karen because we had too many photos for this post so we discarded many – one of them was a close-up of a dragonfly on the garden fruit 🙂
Would love to see a 3D from you!
What a lovely theme for the challenge, and you both looked the epitome of ‘summer’ in your hats. Oh and the flowers….just gorgeous.
Thanks Karen – I did not know that there were so many different dragon & damsel flies….right up your creative street.
Here, we fleetingly saw and were teased with, summer for about a week – just hope it comes out of hiding again and that the temperature stops yo-yo-ing between 25 & 12C….each day we get up with the thought – is it a jumper or not a jumper today? 🤪
But with your theme & lovely photos I can conjure up a warm summer – thanks.
Thank you Antje. It’s a bit yo-yo-ey here too. One day we’re sweltering and the next it’s just about warm enough.
The flowers all came from Annie’s garden and they are gorgeous in a vase – so much prettier than a high street florist would offer.
The best bit about summer is being able to have the doors and windows open and to be able to flop into a garden chair with a cuppa 🙂
Great challenge! You are both adorable in your hats.
Thank you Ruth!
A great Challenge ladies. Your hats need some felt flowers. I had been thinking about doing flowers lately. Now I will need to think more. I have so many felting and woolly things I want to get done this summer but I am slow to get going. So far just enjoying being off work.
Floral decoration for a sunhat – that would be a great summer project Ann !
WOW that is some view of feald of flowers!!!! i would love to trade yards!!!
ok a challange, i will think on this! i still have a few things to finish while i think…. ok i can see a problem with having lots of projects ongoing. oh well i will just have another one and hope to get it finished! maybe i can get Ann to work with me and we will both get the challange done.
It certainly is a beautiful view! A joint challenge piece would be interesting 🙂
Sorry Lyn. I have been remiss in my following of all these fantastic posts. Things have gotten stupidly busy on the family front of late.
I love the theme (and all of the accompanying inspiration! Can you please send some blue skies this way – we are still waiting for summer in Ireland. Annie’s picture from ’16 definitely makes me feel summery. Must try to set aside time for this gorgeous challenge!

My brother (in Dublin) always complains about the weather when I phone him so I make sure to tell him I’m sitting in my sunny garden (even if I’m not) 🙂
Look forward to seeing if you have time to take part – thoroughly understand the busy family front.
Sounds like you ladies had a lovely time, Lyn! I’m particularly envious of that outdoor meal, it seems like Summer said hello in England but is still being shy in Scotland!
Thank you Leonor. We’ve had eating outside weather (love it) but we’ve also had our share of eating indoors. We shouldn’t be surprised though – summer in the UK is always a lottery! It’s said that you can tell when it’s summer because the rain is warmer 🙂
