Small things and help with visor problem

Small things and help with visor problem

I am working on my May slow stitch I have a few things done but it’s not finished quite yet. I plan on finishing it at our guild social on Monday  I think the “May” should be bigger. It’s not a very full page this month but it will have to do. I am liking working with the wash-away stabiliser. We will see if I am still happy after it is dissolved.

I have done a little spinning and plying so I have a few new balls of yarn to play with. I got a Moodie Blues pack from Carlene. It’s one of the World of Wool collections.

I still need to ply the one on the left. I only have one more to go, the top left one. It amazes me the way the wool changes as you spin it. I think because the colours are side by side they become more subtle. I really like the dark one with the blue slubs in it.

Lately, I need some advice on my mirror cover for the visor in my car. I had stuck it on with some Velcro squares. It worked fine all winter but no it’s hot the glue has melted and it has fallen off. What else can I use to attach the cover?

  1. May’s coming along Ann. Your embroidery should sit nicely on top of the felt once you’ve fully rinsed out the stabilizer. Sometimes it does take quite a bit of washing out if you want to avoid ending up with a stiff piece of felt. On the other hand it might work ok in your book if it is a bit stiff.
I can’t help it, I love those balls of blues tops, but having seen them first I found the yarns, however well spun, disappointing. I tend to think that wonderful fibres, especially blends of colours like these, are spoiled when they are spun. But then I also think that lovely yarns are spoiled when they are woven into fabric or knitted/crocheted up. That’s one reason why I gravitated to just felt making, though some blends don’t do well when felted. Perhaps I should just frame the fibres!
You could try putting loops of elastic on the back of your visor cover so that you can slip them over each end of the visor to position the cover over the mirror.
Best of luck avoiding your own gaze whilst driving!

    1. Fingers crossed about removing the stabilizer that I don’t find something odd. Predicting how a yarn will look is not a skill I have. Carlene knows lots of different spinning techniques so is good at manipulating how things look. The elastics are a great idea. Maybe if I wasn’t so gorgeous it would be easier not to look. 😜🤣

  2. Ann’s idea of loops of elastic is a good one 🙂

Love the blues collection – shame to use it – just sitting there looking pretty is enough isn’t it?

The word ‘May’ is big enough – any bigger and it might detract from ‘Mom’? Like very much the heart-shaped ‘O’, and overall the page is lovely and it’s full enough.

    1. I knew if I asked, you all would have a great simple idea. They are lovely in a pile. It would be good to put them in a shadow box to hand on the wall. Thanks Lyn I will probably leave “May” the way it is.

  3. I also think elastic straps will work, although I think the elastic will need to be quite tight to stop any droop. Maybe 3 straps will work.
Love those colours, as soon as you said ‘moody blues’ I immediately started humming ‘Nights in White Satin’ one of my favourite songs ever (1968 I think)

    1. I will start with 2 elastics but I think you maybe right that 3 may be needed. I love the moody blues too. I love music from that era. I was born at the wrong time for the music I like most.

  4. Ann, May is comeing a long and you still have a few days to add anything else!

can we talk about magnets? a cuple glue on magnets on the merror houseing and them sew on magnets on the back of the felt should work.

  5. I thought I posted a comment but it seems to have disappeared. Elastic straps should work but magnets sound like a fun idea too. Looking forward to the finished May page.

  6. May will be a beautiful addition to your book Ann. I love the water soluble stabilizer too – looking forward to seeing your page soon.
Plying seems to take the tops to a different dimension. I think all the colours look more interesting when they have been spun. Lovely blue tones to cool you down for the summer.
Sounds like the straps are the way to go!

  7. I am back to making my batts again, now that I can finally spin them! I haven’t tried any slippery fiber combinations yet, but I think if I take my time, and trust the process it should work. I have some of those same WOW bundles. I usually use them in my batts for added depth and interest. I think I will try spinning one, just to see?

I have tried to think of another way of attaching your mirror cover, but elastic was my initial thought. I do like the magnet idea though, if you can make it work. The cover is so pretty, I feel like the elastic will detract from it. 🤔 Good luck.
