Valentine hearts.

Valentine hearts.

Valentine’s Day is almost here, and many a lovesick young man or woman will be in agonies deciding whether to buy, or make, a love token or two for their heart’s desire. Or, will they wonder if all that effort infused with such emotion, will be appreciated or even reciprocated?

No? Yes? Too much drama? Stick with some tasty snacks, yummy chocolates and a lovely bottle of red to enjoy on my own? That will be me then!

Anyway.

I will join in, my grandchildren will have my love with these felt and fabric hearts filled with lavender from my garden, to place with their clothing in their wardrobe or chest of drawers. And as always grandchildren are my heart’s desire these days.

I have used some left over pieces of my flat felt, and some fabric that I have cut into heart shapes.

This is the front and reverse of each heart

A felt heart shape multi coloured.

Two fabric hearts, a lovely purple batik. This was a small piece of fabric picked up in a charity shop.

The hearts have been stitched these together using hand sewing, and decorated each with another smaller heart shape, mostly for interest.

I have a jar dried lavender left over from last summer, a couple of spoonfuls used to fill the heart shapes, and after filling the shapes, the opening has been securely stitched closed.

A little ribbon attached to the top and secured with a pretty button and these little hearts can be hung on a garment /clothes hanger if wished, or stored in a drawer. Either way the lavender fragrance will hopefully remind them of me.

Red buttons and ribbon 2 red heart shaped buttons, and 2 other red buttons

This is the finished look of my felt and fabric hearts. I think they are pleasing to look at and they smell lovely too!

It is pleasing to see that my lavender shrubs are all putting on a fresh show of growth for the new year, and I can look forward to another crop of lavender for drying in the summer. Must remember to leave some for the bees though.

PS.

I seem to have got all my photo sizing mixed up this time, despite all best intentions of Ruth and Helene. I am sorry. I have a new phone too, mine had developed the battery life of a gnat, and had become very annoying.  The new photos on my phone are not behaving on my laptop. Hopefully I will figure it out before my next post – fingers crossed!

  1. Your lavender hearts are adorable! Such thoughful gifts and the scent of lavender is so calming.
Your plants are doing well and there will be plenty for both you and the bees 🙂

    1. Thank you both. 2 of the grandchildren were here today and choose theirs! Nothing quite like hugs from grandchildren.

  2. Now that’s what I call a lavender bush, I’m sure it’s alive with bees when it flowers Marie.
I think your “smelly” hearts are a lovely idea and they look great finished with the ribbon & little buttons.
I can’t see anything wrong with your photos.

    1. Thank you Ann. Yes – the photos look alright in the post to me too! It just seemed different as I was doing it!
So many bees when it is flower. This is quite a mature shrub now, and I am very careful to keep it flowering as best as possible. Not sure what variety either – but the perfume is so good.

  3. I could smell summer as I was reading your post Marie. What lucky grandchildren to have such an adoring Gran! I love all the hearts and you will be in their thoughts every time they open a drawer or a wardrobe – or maybe they might put them under their pillows when sleeping and you will be in their dreams.
The memory of a gnat! Love it! If you think I can help just send me a quick message (though they look fine here).
    Happy valentines day (in advance)!
    Helene

    1. Thank you Helene. They do look fine on the actual post, so that is a relief. Yes lavender is always welcome. I will email you during the week – you may have a magic solution.

  4. Wonderful hearts for the grands, Marie! I think your photos are fine but if you have questions, do let me or Helene know. I might have to create one for Hubby. Your lavendar bush looks gorgeous. Still snow on the ground here and cold, so no hope of anything growing yet.

    1. Thank you Ruth, I will include you with the email to Helene. Your weather makes me shiver!!

  5. Lucky grandchildren! I am sure that the lavender smell will be their most treasured memory when they will be grown ups. The little hearts can be refilled and reused for many many years: very useful and beautiful gift to loved ones. I still use a small fabric lavender sachet that my friend gifted me more than twenty years ago, it just needs filling once a year and makes me think of her everyday.

  6. Marie, your lavender hearts are gorgeous and beautifully finished with the ribbons and buttons.
Not only will the sight of the hearts remind your Grandies of you, but the waft of the scent too….Whenever and wherever they are, any lavender smell will conjure up your image and I’m sure, will bring a smile to their faces.

I love lavender too, both for its scent and colour (in my case Hidcot, which is the beautiful dark, although not so prolifically scented, lavender) and my garden has several bushes that I religiously chop in Autumn. I usually dry the stalks in bunches for display (as I said I love the colour). you’ve now inspired me to create some sachets….thank you.

We'd love to hear your thoughts!
