Art Therapy

Art Therapy

I mentioned on the Forum a few weeks ago that I’m going to be doing some wet felting as art therapy at a well-being centre in about a month or two. The budget for supplies isn’t huge and will mostly go on wool tops, so I asked if any of our UK felters had any spare bits of wool or fibres they could donate so we had a nice variety of supplies. I was looking for anything really, especially those last little bits of wool tops that end up a half felted at the bottom of a bag. Teri, Galina and Lyn all kindly said they had a few bits they could spare. They weren’t really telling the truth though, they had a lot to spare! In fact, they were so unbelievably generous, I just had to show everyone! There were a few small odds and ends of wool tops and I had a few small bits too, so I carded up a few colourful and variegated batts:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThere were also some nice blended tops:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALots of natural and neutral wool tops, some of which I carded into batts too:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALots of gorgeous natural fleeces and locks:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd lots of beautifully dyed (by hand, I think) locks:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAn unbelievable amount of embellishment fibres:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALots of fabric:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd last, but not least, lots of yarn:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI was talking to the others involved about what direction the group may take long term after the initial learning and exploring and expressing stages. Maybe being part of some local or national project or initiative, or taking part in some kind of exhibition, something that would give the group a theme to work on and an aim. I don’t have any previous experience of anything like that, and don’t even know where to start looking, I see events ‘featuring local community art groups’ all the time, but never see the initial invitation for groups to take part, so if anyone has any info that might help, even if it’s just where or how to start looking, I’d be really grateful 🙂 You can contact me on the forum or using the Contact Form here, or even on Facebook. Thanks so much to Teri, Galina and Lyn for being so generous 🙂

    1. I can, I’ve looked at them all a million times! Not everything is in all the photos actually. Some of your neutral terracotta and mossy green tops and the cream tops are all in the neutral photo. The green silk sari ribbons are in the fabric photo. They do all look nice don’t they 🙂

    1. Ha, a bit 🙂 A few other people were expressing interest in getting involved with something similarly locally, so hopefully once I know more about it, how it works, getting contacts etc, I can pass info on for anyone wanting to start or join something similar.

  1. It all looks fabulous Zed, especially the carded batts from scraps, I just want to dive in! I don’t have any experience of setting up community project exhibitions either, but I would start by approaching anywhere (shopping centres, libraries, any public spaces really) where you have previously seen community projects. Have you thought about calling your local paper to see if they have any contacts? They might even run a story for you and obtain some extra funding. Having an exhibition to work towards sounds like an excellent idea or even just a large collaborative piece so it feels like less of a competition. I imagine most people recovering from mental health problems don’t need any extra stress 🙂

    1. Thanks, Teri 🙂
I did actually ask at their local big arts centre and library yesterday, the arts centre didn’t have anything we could be involved with, but have similar groups, and gave me email contacts. I’ll have to ask if they have a local paper, or might just contact the council. I think they do generally do collaborative pieces.

  2. Good luck with the project, Zed! And kudos to Teri, Lyn, and Galina for their awesome generosity.

  3. I think Teri has some good advice. That’s where I would start especially with the local newspapers. It’s great that you, Teri, Galina and Lyn are so generous with time and supplies. I’m sure the project will be a big success you’ve got a great start with supplies.

    1. Thanks, Marilyn 🙂
I think they’ll be happy with what we have!

  4. What a wonderful donation. They were so generous, I’m sure everyone will be very appreciative of their generosity. Is there somewhere to display anything at the centre? If you had the exhibition or group project there, then when people came to the exhibit, they would learn more about what happens at the centre and how it works. Perhaps get more donations that way too?

    1. I don’t think there is much space, really, Ruth. The centre is jam packed with lots of groups, music studios, dance etc. I wonder if they have temporary display boards, that could work too. I think it’d have to be outside to generate donations as the centre is mostly visited by people who use the services.

  5. I think you’re very kind to tackle this project – it’s a lot of work but there should be a lot of satisfaction in the doing of it.

    1. Thanks, Lyn 🙂
I think it will benefit me just as much as anyone else really, I never get out of the house and meet people, so there’s not much difference than if I attended one of the classes really. Except I might get a brew made for me! 🙂

  6. what a lot of lovely goodies! Good luck with your project. I’m busy sorting out my stash, should have a few bis and bobs. 🙂

  7. Everything looks lovely Zed. So nice of everyone to send your their bits. the library is great. My tiny branch( the smallest one in the area) even has a big board they put art displays up on. The bank does too.

    1. Thanks, Ann 🙂
I’ll have to see if there’s a library near the centre who would be interested.

  8. Wouldn’t mind sending stuff, but the postage rate to UK is a killer.Baa Baa FeltPhyllis Gropp

    1. Thanks for the sentiment anyway, Phyllis 🙂
The postage from other countries is why I just asked our UK felters! There might be a group near you, though.

  9. What wonderful fibre you got for your projects, Zed! Would you be interested in some white alpaca?

As for where to look for initiatives… how about your local spinning guild? They might have information on local fibre activities, as I’m sure they get contacted for that sort of events (mine does, at least).

Looking forward to seeing what you make with all that lovely wool!

    1. Thanks, Leonor 🙂
I am sure they’d love some alpaca, thank you!
We don’t have a spinners guild anywhere near here, unfortunately. It’s weird considering that Manchester and surrounding areas are built on the fibre industries. I’m thinking of asking at MOSI when I do the Makefest if they know anything or have anything planned. They have a massive textile gallery.

    2. That’s a shame, there not being a guild near you. I’d think there’s one in every corner of the UK judging the fibre interest I see here 😊
Remind me via email about the alpaca? You know I’m a fish brain…
