Happy Holidays
Happy holidays, everyone. Christmas for us this year will be late. We won’t have family dinner until Sunday, when everyone can be together. The littles will still get Christmas day and Santa, but we big people will wait. I am hoping that that means I can play in my studio on Christmas Day. I think that will be a great present for me.
Currently, I am still working on my picture from Jan’s class. This is how it was in the last post. I don’t like the tree trunks I added at the end, and I am not fussy about the fog.
First thing, take the tree trunks off and pull back the fog. I also want to soften the bottom edge of the fog. Although we do get fog that is just like that, with a hard line bottom sitting several feet off the ground, it’s not looking great in the picture.
I did try adding a leafless tree near the shed, but I pulled it off again before I took a picture. I also do not like this fogound tree. The branches are too round. I like the trees behind it and to the right. That will have to be next.
Jan suggested I try a frame on to get a better look at it. The picture is a little bigger than the frame opening, so I tried it with a little less sun and with a little less snow. Sorry about the bad( worse than usual) pictures. I thought I had them straight when I took them. I think I like it better with a little less snow and a lower horizon. What do you think?
I am still thinking about a fence along thetee line. Jan suggested making it at an angle across and out the side. I am not sure. I like the snow. I was thinking of adding just a small clump of grass in the snow on the right to balance things.

Yes to a little less snow and lower horizon. It’s funny how things don’t look right in a picture, like the fog, even though you might see it exactly like that in real life! The picture is developing nicely 🙂
thanks, one vote for less snow and more sun. It is funny how things look different in a picture. I have driven though fog that is 4 feet off the ground but it looks really odd even in a photo.
It’s lovely – yes to the grass if sparse, but the rest looks just right to me! Love the sun/moon just visible in the misty sky
Thanks, yes, just a clump or two of grass.
Fog is always difficult. I have a picture I want to do, it is of Corfe Castle (an iconic castle sitting on top of a hill) and it is just appearing up out of the mist which surrounds the hill on which it stands. But how to represent the mist? I like how you’ve done it by thinning out the foggy fibres. And yes, your with less sun and image looks really good, with just a suggestion of where the sun is. I do think that for the sake of balance you need something towards the bottom right hand corner, possibly a bush or as you suggest a clump of grass.
Enjoy your Christmas Day in the workshop.

I am happier with the fog now. I did wonder about using either silk hanky or lap to do the fog, it might be to shiny. one for less sun and more snow. Yes a few weeds/grass sticking up in the bottom right should do it. The original picture has weeds/grass all over.
I agree with the others that the cropped image with less snow is more appealing. If you take that photo, print it out (you may need several copies) and then you can “make changes” with a pen or a pencil to see what it would look like before you try it in wool.
I personally think that perhaps the line of trees is a bit too straight across on the bottom. If you added more on the right side bottom of the trees to bring the line into a diagonal towards the right lower corner, that might help.
Merry Christmas and I hope you get a studio day for Christmas!
Thanks, two for more sun less snow. Yes I should pint a few more copies off. I started adding the fence so that may make the strait line of trees better or more logical. To me it looks right. That’s want the edge of our fields look like.
There is a lot of atmosphere in your picture Ann, but I am glad the fence/tree trunks is gone. I love the sky, it has a great colour on your photo. Tracks leading to the cabin perhaps?
I hope you have a lovely family day on Sunday.
Thanks Marie. Yes I don’t think adding the branches would have helped much. They were to dark and regimented. Tracks may be a good addition.
Your picture is developing nicely and I too am in favour of the less snow lower horizon version.
To off set the sparse r-h-side, as mentioned above, a track to your hut would give value to the hut being in the picture. I see a slightly meandering path.
If you don’t want to print too many pictures….print one, then overlay with transparent film/acetate sheets and draw on those with a marker pen. Once your picture is complete, you can wipe off the marker with meths & voila your sheets are available for re-use!
