What Would You Have Done?

What Would You Have Done?

I have a confession to make…. Actually 2 confessions, if I am totally honest….

The spinners among you will know all too well that spinning wheels are a lot like sheep, if you don’t get the tension just right they can be a little skittish, they need feeding (with fibre) and of course they are always happiest when gathered in a flock. 🙂 I suspect you already see where this post is headed….

My first, beloved wheel is an Ashford Traditional fitted with a jumbo flyer. She is a lovely wheel. I have spent many happy hours learning to spin and making some (prize-winning) art yarns on her but I have been hankering for a e-spinner almost since the first time I plied 2 singles together.

Mr TB likes a good engineering challenge, so he offered to design and 3-D print an e-spinner for me. Three years later we are surrounded by various iterations of e-spinner parts but nothing that could function as an e-spinner.

Sexy eh?

In January a friend posted on FB that she had signed up to the Electric Eel Wheel Kickstarter for his newest e-spinner, the Fold. As the name suggests it is a decent size but folds down to make it much more convenient to travel with. I had to have one! So I signed up but soon realised I would have to wait until March 2026 for it to be shipped! Oh well, I’ve already waited 3 years for my first e-spinner, what’s another year? So I resigned myself to having an only child (wheel) for another year.

Phew! that’s confession #1 revealed, that wasn’t so hard but Mr TB was rather disappointed that I had given up on him producing an e-spinner.

Earlier this month was the annual Pukekohe Spin-in, I was trading at the event, and overheard a conversation about an e-spinner on the pre-loved equipment stand. The other traders were still setting up their stands and the doors weren’t due to open for another 30 min. I was just going to have a look, there’s no harm in looking right?

Ten minutes later I was happily putting the e-spinner through her paces in the hall kitchen, I was in love! I knew I was breaking the first rule of selling at craft fairs – “don’t spend more than you’ve earned”, but I didn’t care, she was coming home with me! 🙂

Next, to “sneak” my new purchase into the house….

Mr TB just rolled his eyes at me.

The first few evenings I had her sitting on the coffee table but it was a little too far away for comfort, so I started looking for a height adjustable trolley and came across various tables that are probably meant for people who are bed-bound. I ordered one and braced myself for the inevitable barrage of jokes from Mr TB, but as yet he’s not made any comment. I suspect he doesn’t realise what the table is…

It’s perfect for spinning with my feet up on the Lazy-boy in front if the TV and the castors make it a doddle to wheel out of the way when not in use.

I’ve only had the spinner for a few days but this was the first skein she has produced for me:

I am delighted with my purchase, she wasn’t cheap but e-spinners seem to keep their value on the second-hand market here. I will probably sell my Ashford e-spinner once the EEW Fold arrives. Mr TB thinks I’m crazy buying 2 e-spinners just a few weeks apart, do you think I made the right call?

  1. oooooooo yes! absolutely Teri. I think you have come to the right place for affirmation. What sumptuous results too. Love your thinking!

  2. I’m not a spinner but I can see how finding an e-spinner that you could try out first was definitely the reason to buy two. As you say, you can always sell the other one. I’m sure that three spinning wheels is not a high number for fiber enthusiasts.

  3. I’m not a spinner, but knowing my passion for other fibre things I can totally relate.
Your yarn looks wonderful and I’m looking forward to seeing how you use it.

  4. Congratulations!! your herd is growing!!
i have both a nano and EEW6 for electric wheels. i found the nano had bobins that were too small for me so got the EEW6. i was looking at the Fold since it looks like it will be easyer to change bobins and i like the idea of being able to see what my RPM’s are.
i miss teadling with the electric wheels but they are a lot more portable! i find althogh i love my ashford tradional that got me started with wheels, i use the Lendrum Rook, the new to me Thumblena (another small upright wheel), Road bug or Hatbox most of teh time. its good to have choices and then the wheels dont get lonely!!
i am glad you lept at the opertunty to get the type of wheel you wanted. second hand and in good shape is not predictable as a shopping option so its best to get it when you see it. and its always good to have a test drive of a wheel!! i have found treaddle angle or treadle placement uncomfortable on some so have opted not to perchus them.
CONGRATULATIONS again!! i am shure you will have lots of fun!!

    1. I confess I looked into the nano, they are uber portable (small enough to fit in a handbag!) but really limited to only spinning laceweight, so not something I currently have much use for. I am impatiently waiting to get my paws on the EEW Fold thought.

Still trying to convince Mr TB that different wheels are good for different yarns / purposes, I don’t think he really understands that the jumbo flyer on my Ashford Traddy sets her apart from the e-spinner.

    2. You are right! differnt wheels do or teach you different things. i got the Robideau to teach me to treadle slower, that didnt work but the Luiet is trying to get me to slow down. the diminutive greate wheel shows me how to spin big fluffy yarn, everyone else wants to spin worsted or semi worsted!!! i will keep trying. the flax wheels are greate for flax but the traditional with its normal head will spin flax as well (just dont mention that to glenn). have you considered adding a cuple of wheels for MrTB so he can join you spinning and wont feel left out? (it also meens you get a cuple more wheels). i am still drooling after a Majacraft with an accelorator and ether a dela or pigtail as the orifice. it would give lots of scope for spinning. lace wate to novelty yarns! not that i realy need another wheel.
for my EEW6 i picked up a portable plasic file holding box with lid. it fits the wheel assembed with space for extra bobins and room for fiber. it even has a handle. i want to make it a cloth bag as a cover with a sholder strap for even more ease of carrying.
you have a saxony style wheel and an electric stay at home, and are getting an electric go out and play moddle. so you still could add a castle style or a spindle wheel or both!!! if you wanted a variation on a spindle wheel thats small and portible you might like a book charka? so many options on how to make yarn or thread! if your realy creative you may be able to explain the travle wheel catagory as a type of wheel too!!!
Have fun spinning!!! (and collecting more wheels)

  5. You can’t have just one wheel, it would get lonely. I no longer have a wheel, mine when to join another flock of wheels. But you do need more than one going at a time. I have at least a dozen spindles and 4 of them are in my travel basket at any time and they often all have yarn in progress. You never know what you might feel like spinning.
