A Felted Winter Trees Table Centre

Annie (rosiepink)
I made this felted snowy winter trees table centre as my idea for the Q4 challenge which was to create a textile item inspired by the work of Eric Ravilious. It is approx 60cm / 24″ across.
This turned out to be a double challenge for me as I chose his woodcut work for my inspiration, with a monochrome palette, and as you may know, I usually love love love to use lots of colours.

I just really liked the subject and the way he stylised it. The over sized snow flakes really appealed to me!

I had started off thinking I was going to make a bowl but once I’d felted it I decided I liked it as it was for now. I may well change that later though. I did make the centre thicker when laying out the base as I thought it might need the reinforcement if stitched into a bowl due to its size.
The base is made from white Merino wool tops (laid out over a wire ring for wreath making to attempt a decent circle shape!)
Then for the majority of the trees I used some very fragile t-shirt material that I’m really pleased didn’t disintegrate since I couldn’t be bothered to make a sample this time. I also used some other reclaimed fabrics from other garments and some yarns.

I found it hard to keep the design simple and took it apart a few times after over complicating it (and adding then removing colour!) but got there in the end. I’m surprised how much I like it as I would not normally have made something in one colour (it’s all shades of blue but does look black in places in the photos).

I noticed I made the branches a bit short since it was more pattern based to make the circle, but in reality they would have been longer and overlapped a bit but I like the way it turned out, and might even go on to make a picture in the same way.

LOVE THIS
Thank you! 🥰
I like this a lot,i its so different and original and the colors too.
Thank you! 🥰 It is something quite different for me, and I really enjoyed making it 😊
WOW Annie, that is really gorgeous, it really reflects your Ravilious pictures. I’m not normally one for simplified pictures but his and yours I really like. The trees do look black and white and I was going to twit you on getting some blue in with one of the “barber pole” yarns. Then I saw the blue sky behind the tops of the trees and then you said it was all blue not black. Whatever, the whole thing looks really good and I think that a table mat is better than a bowl here as you can see the trees from a distance rather than having to get close up to look inside a bowl.
I like the decorations on the branches in your early image too.
Ann
Thanks Ann! Ha ha, yes I did keep on sneaking extra colour on in bits of fabric then made myself take it back off, and stick to blues! But I do think it really worked in the end. As for the decorations I thought I’d get more mileage out of my autumn felt beads as they are so pretty just dangling about the place! 😊 Annie
Fantastic! This is quite inspiring. =) Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! 🥰 I’m so pleased you like it and find it inspiring, that makes me happy, Annie 😊
Absolutely gorgeous, Annie. I love it as a table mat. Wonderful design, it works so well and you definitely hit the mark with it looking inspired by Ravilious but not copying his work. I hope you keep it as a table mat.
Thank you Lindsay 🥰 I’m really pleased with it, and am loving how it looks on the table so it will definitely get a decent reprieve from any further fiddling! 😊
What an inspiring piece! I love that it is all blues, and reading through the comments, I had to go back and re-visit and re-visit. Wow. There is so much to see, and with the circular design, it is like looking up in a snowy forest. Just lovely.
Thank you Deb 🥰 So happy that you find it inspiring! The circular shape did work out really well for the subject, I’d like to say it was designed to be like standing in the middle looking up in a snowy forest but that sort of happened through playing! 😊 Annie
Just gorgeous! A memorable keepsake!
Thank you! 🥰 So pleased you like it, I will definitely get some enjoyment out of seeing it on my table 😊 Annie
Wow Annie! This is wonderful and really gives the feel of the Ravilious prints. I love the subject of trees too, always my favorite 🙂
Thank you Ruth! 🥰 Yes you and me both love our trees don’t we, always a fab subject! 🌲🌳 Annie 😊
Do keep it as a flat piece Annie. It is simply stunning. You have shown me that you can create amazing work in both monochrome and colour, you clever lady! I fell in love with this on social media, so it is really good to be able to read the back story. Love it!
Hugs

Thank you Helene! 🥰 I feel like I’ve been sent to top of the class! I was pleasantly surprised how the limited colour use came out, it is very effective and something to explore more! Although I feel like my next thing might be using bonkers colours! Annie 😊
Absolutely gorgeous, I love the colour choices, and a lovely Art Deco feel.
Thank you Marie 🥰 The monochrome worked really well for this subject! Ooh I hadn’t thought of Art Deco, just did a quick internet search and that is definitely another subject to explore, those shapes and patterns, yum! 😍Annie
A stunning homage to Ravilious Annie….and your feeling of being placed at the top of the class is well deserved 🤪
How long did it all take to felt? And if the finished size is 60cm, what was the starting size?
Wow….you working in monochrome!!! Go girl….you cracked it. Wish I lived closer, I might just have paid you a visit, leaving with a ‘fuller’ bag than on my arrival 😇😜
Thanks Antje 😇
I’m never really sure how long things take since I tend to leave them out and then come and go until they are done! The first layout photo I took was 26 Nov and the last photo I took was 7th Jan! Hmmmm!! I think the actual felting part took a couple of hours (ish!). Ahhh, the starting size. Again, I’m not sure but I’d guess around 65-70cm, I don’t think there was a huge amount of shrinkage. Must remember to measure next time!
You can see I’m laser focused and very technical with my felting (Not!) 🤪
I know, where did the colour go? I’m glad it worked out well! I’ll remember to frisk you if you should visit! 🤣🥰 Annie
This turned out beautifully! Everything about it ‘sings’ – as my Mom used to say when something pleased the eye and spirit! thanks for sharing your process and wonderful work.
Thank you! 🥰 I’m so pleased that you like it and that you find it sings! That is a lovely expression 😍 Annie
I love the piece, it really fits the brief of being inspired by Ravilious. It is so nice flat I think it is nicer than a bowl. It must have taken ages to layout all the trees and branches.
Thank you Ann 🥰 Yes sometimes the piece tells you what it wants to be doesn’t it, and in this case it just looked good flat! The laying out did take a while but got faster after the first couple of trees as I decided to think less and be more free with it! 😊Annie
Annie, what a magnificent piece! Did you have difficulty felting the fabric into the wool? Generally. I “scotch tape” the fabric with very fine threads of wool but I don’t always like the look of wool over fabric.
Thank you Jackie! 🥰 It was surprisingly easy to felt this, I think I got lucky with my choice of fabrics! I had been worried about the tshirt fabric but it was fine. It doesn’t always work that way though! If I have serious doubts about something felting in I do the same as you with a very fine wisp of fibres over the fabric, depends on what mood I’m in, more often these days I might sample a fabric first to see if it wants to felt in or not! 😊 Annie
Wow, I really love this piece, Annie. It is totally different from your usual flamboyant colours and yet so yours in the style of the trees. The trees are gorgeous, and the effect of the whole is so balanced! Flat surface is perfect for this piece, I agree with the others.
Thank you! 🥰 I’m so pleased you can still see me in it, despite the lack of colours! 😊 This theme definitely has scope for more experimentation! 😊Annie
