2024 Christmas Card Exchange
I participated in the card exchange again this year and got matched up with Ruth Lane. Of course, I put off making her card until she sent me an email telling me that my card was going out in the mail very soon. Nothing like pressure to get things done!
I didn’t really want to make something that could only be displayed at Christmas time. But I knew I wanted red in it. I have several bins of hand dyed fabrics so I started looking there and found this piece.

Since I didn’t have a lot of time, I thought I might try fusing some shapes onto this background. I have quite a bit of fussy cut shapes that had already been fused to Wonder Under so I started playing with those.
I first tried using just the circles and it wasn’t doing much for me. Then I came across the bag of fussy cut fish and thought these would become my Christmas Fishies!

Then I thought it needed some seaweed so I found some fancy yarn that I thought might help to bring some of the blue color in.

Next, I needed to quilt it and zig zag the edges and get it put onto cardstock.
Ta-Da! Christmas Fishies all ready to be mailed off. Approximately 5″ x 6 1/2″.

Hope you all had a marvelous Christmas!
Happy New Year!

Lovely fishy card that’s Christmassy but all year round too! Your machine stitching really made the picture and the multi-colour thread frame is perfect.
Thank you! Sometimes the variegated thread is a life saver!
Best wishes to you in 2025!
That’s a great all year round card Tesi and I love the multicoloured framing too.
You mentioned “fussy cut” twice. I’d never heard of this and thought you were being funny, till I thought to ask Mr Google if it was a specific technique. You learn something new every day! It sounds like a good idea if you can be bothered to do it – definitely something to do while listening to an audio book! I suppose fusing it to fusible web would help to stop fraying of delicate shapes too. It certainly worked well with your fishes.

Fusing definitely helps with the fraying plus it helps to keep the cuts stuck onto the background fabric until you can stitch them down. I’m not a fan of glue sticks. Happy New Year!
What a great design Tesi! I like how the circles carry through, from the applique, the fish and the FM stitching. The colour scheme is beautiful too.
Thanks Karen. The FM stitching definitely helps to tie it all together.
Hope your holidays have been joyful!
Caught the dreaded lurgy travelling home last weekend Tesi so been isolating for a few days. Looking forward to getting my taste buds back!
Hope yours was a healthier one.
I had to google “lurgy” Karen. Now I know a new word! Hope you’re feeling better each day.
Thanks Tesi!
Thanks Tesi, I love my fishies! It’s fun to see how you put it together.
Thanks Ruth! I love my card from you too!
Happy New Year!
What a fab fun year-round card. I love the design and the colours which is enhanced by your FM stitching.
Thanks Antje! Hope your holiday has been wonderful!
This is a lovely card. The fish are splendid, and I love the colour choices and the stitching.
Thank you so much!
Great card, I love the fish. The fusing sound interesting. I have only seen stuff that does one or both sides at the same time. Never one that does one side and then can be fused to something else later.
Wonder Under (which is Pellon 805) works well for my art quilt fodder. I can fuse one side to my fabric pieces, usually fat quarter size, and then draw on the paper side to make my shapes. I read a blog from another artist that uses it for her art quilts, too and she said her last bolt was smaller and also felt much different and that it wasn’t sticking as well to her fabrics. I guess I’ll find that out once I’m done with my current bolt.
I do hope that the Pellon manufacturer hasn’t got it wrong. Why is it that manufacturers keep insisting on “improving” things? Rarely do the changes they make turn out to be better than the old. What happened to the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mantra? My husband is of the view that changes aren’t for “our” benefit, what they mean is that what they’ve done allows them either they to put the price up, or it costs them less to manufacture – or both! 😠 😤😬

Oh WOW Tesi. I love your card and the fact that it can be displayed all year around. I am sure Ruth loves it too.
Happy new year

Thanks Helene!
Love your fishy card. So neat to see the design phases and then see the finished project. Well done.
Thanks Carlene. Happy New Year!
