2024 Second Quarter Challenge
This challenge is for all members: weavers, beaders, sewists, felters, crocheters, knitters and textile mixed media artists.
Make a ‘topper’ for a greetings card that doubles as a small gift e.g. a brooch, a coaster, a hanging decoration, a bookmark, or of course a card can just be a small artwork too. The gift could be themed e.g. a birthday brooch, a coaster for a new home, a decoration for a nursery … there are so many possibilities!
We were so enthusiastic about the idea that we got straight to it and made an Easter card with a detachable hanging decoration for someone who puts a white twig-tree in her window every Easter with her growing collection of Easter Egg decorations.

Everything came from stash. A piece of scrap felt gave us two easter egg shapes that were hand stitched with a bunny outline.
Thank you to Kaitlen for the free printable bunny outline:

The bunny tails are hand-rolled merino beads stitched into place.

The two sides were machine stitched together before bows were added to each top.
We used a piece of white A4 size card, folded in half, to make the card then we printed a creamy coloured egg-shape and ‘Happy Easter’ that we stuck to the card before attaching the hanging decoration with a simple stitch at the top of the ribbon.
We bet you’ve already thought of several possibilities for ‘gift-cards’ and we look forward to seeing them!

I like that idea.
I’m afraid that I didn’t get anywhere at all with the last challenge. I was all set to get on with my “me cover” (UFO patchwork nuno felt jacket) when my husband tried to cut off his left thumb with his circular saw! He actually only managed to graunch down the inside of the thumb, missing bone and sinew, but because his blood sugar was way too high it wouldn’t heal. Anyway, long story short, I’ve had to be around to do those things you need two thumbs to do for nearly the whole of the last 3 months (and counting) and haven’t been able to look at craft work (other than reading posts). However things are improving (it says here!) so I’m looking forward to making some special occasion cards.
Great idea Lyn & Annie.

Ouch! Hope your husband fully recovers soon Ann.
We hope this challenge is not only fun but that the cards made will bring a smile to the recipients’ faces 🙂
I’m in agreement with Ann. Things haven’t been calm in my realm either. My online EPP quilt group, has failed to impress: not the supportive group I was hoping for. The person who sold the pattern, papers, and idea of the “helpful” environment, is not participating 🤔 in the group. 🧐 hmmm?? I might be showing my age here, but whatever happened to the idea of having integrity, in the things you sell, say, and do? My mistake! So, the quilt pieces I’ve done are likely to become a couple pillows and a large pincushion or two. Onward and upwards to better things.
This is a challenge I can get my head around quickly. I’m spending a bit more time with my Mom at the memory care facility. She’s been more anxious lately, and when I can get her to listen to classical music, she calms right down. The other residents respond to game show reruns, and old tv 📺 shows. 🙄 I try to take small things with me, to encourage participation, or let her watch what I am doing.
Thank you ladies, I will get on it soon, before I forget! 😬
Sorry to hear about the quilt group – live and learn eh Capi?
Yes, this challenge is portable and should be one that can be picked up and put down when you have time. Maybe when you are listening to classical music with your mum she might enjoy watching you work 🙂
A great idea for the challenge! I make handmade cards on a regular basis but rarely do I make a card with a separate piece as a gift. But it’s a wonderful idea and I love your little bunny, he’s adorable. Perfect for the Easter season.
Thank you Ruth – the bunny Easter-tree decoration was enjoyable, and quite quick, to make. It will be fun seeing what little card gifts everyone comes up with.
Great challenge Annie and Lyn, one that’s not to hard to think up, perfect for a busy life. The bunny is very cute.
Thank you Ann – something ‘doable’ for this time of year when the outdoors is beckoning!
