Art Retreat

Art Retreat

Last weekend my surface design group went on an art retreat. We stayed at the Kiwanis Lodge in Marion, Montana which is right on a lake. The weather had been rainy and cold and I thought it would continue into the weekend. But a small miracle occurred and we had beautiful weather all weekend. We did eco printing most of the weekend but a couple of us did some gelatin plate printing as well.

The Lodge

Here’s a few of us getting ready to start on Friday afternoon. We had all collected a lot of leaves so we had two full tables covered with leaves.

A Variety of LeavesHere’s just a small selection of what we used. Some worked great and others not as much. But almost everything we tried printed on paper.

Cards from the Florist

Louise got some leaves from a local florist and they gave us little cards with different sayings on them. This was mine.

We soaked our papers in alum water and then applied the leaves that had been dipped in iron water. Some of used plastic in between to resist the leaves printing where we didn’t want them. Then we put ceramic tiles on both sides of the paper leaf sandwiches and tied them up.

We had several steaming stations and pretty much kept them going all weekend. There was also an onion skin bath that some of the items were boiled in.

After steaming for an hour, the fun part of opening the packages began.

We got some beautiful results. The bright blue is from blue carrots.

Some of us also did eco printing on fabric and larger paper. I didn’t manage to get any photos of the fabric that was printed. But I will try to get some photos at our next meeting to show you.

We also played with gelatin plate printing again which was fun and colorful.

Sunset at Kiwanis Lodge

And I’ll leave you with this photo I took of the gorgeous sunset. It was a gorgeous weekend and we had a great time. It’s always so nice to allow yourself dedicated time to “play” with like-minded friends.

  1. You certainly achieved some gorgeous, clear, colourful prints which isn’t always the case with eco printing!! Well done and thank you for sharing.

  2. Beautiful prints – I was surprised by the bright blue. What a wonderful setting for a weekend retreat. I may have been tempted to put a deckchair on the edge of the lake and dip my toes in the water whilst enjoying the view.

  3. Very nice article and great pic! I love my fabric. Sally

  4. It looks like a lot of fun in a great setting. Did you know which leaves would print or did you take a chance to experiment? Your results were great. I’ve never heard of blue carrots. I’ve seen purple ones. Interesting. Great sunset.

    1. Hi Marilyn, somehow missed your comment, sorry. Paula has been doing all the experimenting and knew which leaves worked best. But we had some she hadn’t tried before so we just experimented. I think the blue and purple carrots are the same. Perhaps they are called purple but they print blue. I hadn’t seen them before.

  5. It looks like a gorgeous place to relax and be creative! The prints are brilliant, I love the blue too, but also the red onions skins. And the geliprints are great too 🙂

    1. Thanks Zed! The lodge is really great and as my husband is in the organization, it isn’t expensive to use. It’s amazing how red the onion skins get on the prints. And the carrots were really cool too. Who knew? 🙂

  6. Looks like you had a great time. I wish I lived closer! I wonder if the blue will stay or face. Blue veg dye is usually fugitive. I bet the blue and red all the way through potatoes would make great prints too.

    1. Thanks Ann, I wish you lived closer too. It would be great fun to get together. Not sure how the blue dye will keep. I just used it on paper and it looks great right now. Will have to check with the others that used it on fabric and see what it looks like after washing. Haven’t tried potatoes, so no idea if that works or not.

  7. Looks like you had a great time – and in such a fab location! Your ecoprints turned out really well – must try some blue carrots. Here in the UK they are sold as heritage carrots so are more expensive – mustn’t tell my partner. 😉

  8. What a wonderful setting for a retreat, I also wish I lived nearer! The Eco prints look incredible and it would be good to see some of the printed fabrics if you do get the chance to show them.

    1. Thanks Karen! i always have this dream of being able to visit with all my blogging and forum friends easily where we could all get together but no one had to travel very far. Beam me up Scotty! 🙂 I will try to get photos of the fabric at our next meeting.
