Take One, Take Two and Roll

Take One, Take Two and Roll

While I was getting organized for our trip to Europe, I realized I could use something to keep my jewelry in other than little plastic bags like I have done previously for travel.

I devised a jewelry roll with netting inside to hang my earrings.  But my first attempt didn’t go well.  Even though I knew in my mind netting wouldn’t shrink, I proceeded anyway.

I used two layers of purple prefelt with a small pocket at the bottom.  I’m not sure what I was thinking then either. On the front side I used a strip of from a silky scarf down the middle then hand dyed cheesecloth on both sides for decoration.

On the inside I put the netting in and two panels of the scarf with a thin layer of plastic wrap so the panels wouldn’t felt to the inside.  I thought perhaps I could control the shrinkage so the netting would work, but I also wanted that texture the scarf and cheesecloth would provide. Hah!

I got my texture, but the netting just puffed out. I cut it out, but wasn’t happy with the way I could fix it.

So, on to the second try.  Same layout only without the netting and the small pocket at the bottom.  I put an extra narrow piece of felt along the edges of the panels to help them felt in straight and give it some extra strength.

After I got the ruching I wanted and the felt was dry, I hand sewed the netting around the edges and a line through the middle to keep it from stretching out.  The panels were a little puffy, but their job was to hold in the earrings after being rolled so they wouldn’t fall out the sides.

I hung the earrings from the netting.

Success! I sewed on a matching ribbon to tie the roll and I was done!

  1. Ah, trial and error – that’s how we learn. 😉 But it turned out both beautiful and functional in the end. Perhaps the first one could be adjusted to hold necklaces and bracelets, with a few ribbons to tie them down with?

  2. Well done, Marilyn! Not a lot of people would persevere after a first failed attempt 🙂 I think the end result looks great, and as for the first piece of felt… frame it as a reminder to keep going? 😀

    1. Thanks Leonor! I’m not always so persevering, but I really wanted this for my trip. It is pretty enough to frame. Hmm.

  3. You got great textures with the silk and cheesecloth, Marilyn 🙂
I was thinking similarly to Zara, or you could add a piece of waterproof fabric to the back and sew up for a make-up/bathroom bag.

    1. Thanks Zed! I’m glad I had enough to do a second one the same. So many good ideas for repurposing the first one!

  4. If at first you don’t succeed…Well done, Marilyn! I like Leonor’s idea…you could hand embroider your slogan on the first piece of felt. Or, as a second idea, make another jewelry roll for those of us who still wear clip-on earrings!

    1. Thanks Cathy! Oh, so many good ideas. I may have to make several more for matching personal items. 🙂

  5. It’s a great jewellery roll – pretty and very protective. What a good idea to have netting from which to hang the earrings.

What to do with the other piece? Put it in your ‘box’ – never know when it may come in handy for something.

    1. Thanks Lyn! I had used netting on a sewn piece many, many years ago that was pulled over a plastic stand. Not for travel but for convenience on my dresser. Now I have too many earrings for that. With all these great ideas I’m sure it won’t stay in the box long.

  6. It’s great Marilyn. The museum that has my scarves wanted some travel jewelry cases and I had no idea how to do it. I didn’t want to fiddle with zippers. I think I can incorporate your idea with some of the other suggestions to make something they might like.

  7. Thanks Ann! Go for it! Let us know how they turn out. It is really handy for travel.

  8. The final piece is very classy and elegant. I could see women buying this for their travels. I’m glad you didn’t give up on it. 🙂

    1. Thanks Angie! I’m glad I didn’t either. It really came in handy and does look better than plastic bags. 🙂

  9. Great idea Marilyn. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get what you want. Looks like you have some good suggestions for the first piece. I made a roll to hold knitting needles for a friend but mine had sewn pockets, only the outer portion was felt.

    1. Thanks Ruth! The knitting needle roll sounds good, too. You could probably do the same with all felt, but it would require more planning and a lot of resists. 🙂
