Computer Problems and Fimo

Computer Problems and Fimo

I mentioned in my last post that I’d started working on a Fimo tutorial. I thought I’d have it finished now, but it hasn’t been as easy as I thought. After all the nice cloudy stormy days that weren’t great for photos we’ve had about 2 weeks of non stop sunshine, and when I say non stop, I mean about 17 very long, hot hours a day 🙁  I never have much luck with photos at this time of year as it is, the light isn’t sharp like in winter, but for some reason it seems even softer than usual. I ended up re-doing my photos about 4 times.
Then my computer died. It temporarily revived for a few days and I managed to copy all my photos onto dvds. I’d started on the editing when it died for good about a week ago. I managed to borrow a computer for a few days, so I did manage to organise the  2,000+ photos into folders and start sorting through them at least. I set my new computer up over the weekend, took about 2 days to find out where things are hidden (Windows 8, I thought Vista was bad!) and made a start on writing the tutorial and lightening and cropping the final photos.
This was the piece I showed part of last time, that I dropped the camera on, it has been baked.

I had some spare pieces of clay left over from the demonstration pieces so I had a play around and made a few things just for myself. This is a pendant, it’s resting on a glass pebble to catch the light.

I used some of the leftover pieces together to make multi coloured pieces, this is a heart shaped button.

I made quite a few buttons, you never know when you might need one, I might have to do a few more though, I have a pile of purses that would look good with buttons made to match.

What projects have you been working on lately?

  1. I seem to be in limbo land right now. I am sure you understand that statement. I always worry about my photos, even though I have them saved onto a flash, I think I need another backup. A DVD would probably make it more secure. I await your clay tutorial. You work is wonderful with clay and everything you do.

    1. Thanks, Judy 🙂
Yeah, I know what you mean. DVDs really are a good way to back up, ever since I first got a digital camera I’ve added the previous months’ photos to a dvd, just to be safe.

  2. I’m so sorry to hear about your computer problems. It never fails when you want to finish something the equipment gives you trouble. I had that problem this weekend. I had been working on a transfer for a tshirt and my printer broke.

The fimo pieces are beautiful. I’m sure the tutorial will be awesome when you get things straightened out. You put so much effort into it. I look forward to the final.

    1. Thanks, Marilyn 🙂
The tutorial has just kept growing and growing!
I hope you got your printer problem worked out. I’ve got a feeling mine won’t work with the new computer.

  3. Love the fimo buttons…wonder how durable they are. I have never used fimo but am tempted, as if I don’t have enough projects on hand! I make felted purses and garments from regular fabric, and sometimes want a special button.
    thanks!

    1. Thanks, Nancy 🙂
Yeah, like Ruth says, they are durable and you can make them as thick as you like and any shape, and they’re baked in 30 minutes!

  4. Nancy – I have some of Zed’s fimo buttons and they are very durable.

Zed – I love the top piece. I’m sure the tutorial will be full of information and I look forward to seeing it.

    1. Thanks, Ruth 🙂
Hopefully it won’t be too long before it’s finished, fingers crossed.

  5. Wow – dropping the camera on the green one didn’t do it any harm – it’s beautiful. And I really like the heart – a set of those would look fantastic on clothing.

Have you thought about backing up your photos onto a free remote server? Picasa?

    1. Thanks, Lyn 🙂
I often take at least 40 photos a day, I do other photography too. I did often use flickr for if I wanted to re-use a photo, but it’s not quite so easy now. And I’m trying to be better about getting rid of some photos, you don’t really need 7 supermacros of every felt piece do you? 😉

  6. Changing computers can be a challenge. I hope your printer will talk to windows 8.
The buttons and pendant look great. is the bigger one a button? it looks like it would make a nice hair clip.

    1. Thanks, Ann 🙂
The top one isn’t anything yet, I’ve made similar ones into brooches and fridge magnets, but hair clips is a good idea too 🙂

    1. Thanks, Kaz 🙂
Maybe you can give it a test drive for me, you always say you wouldn’t know where to start 😉

We'd love to hear your thoughts!
