I decided to take the plunge and open an Etsy shop. Don’t worry, that doesn’t mean I’m going to start making sticks with feathers and crystals stuck to them or adding ironic moustaches to all my notebooks ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  Lyn was telling me that etsy have started doing instant downloads, but it appears to be in the trial stage at the moment. I added a digital download to my shop and applied to join their ‘team’ in the hope I can try it too, but I’m still waiting to hear.

I don’t have much in there at the moment, mostly some silk fibre packs and a felted notebook cover. But on Friday I was having a rummage through my fabric and with 3 large boxes and 5 shoe boxes open and contents all over, I thought it might be nice to put together a fabric sample pack of the different fabrics I used in my e-book. How long could it take? About 20 minutes or so? Ha! 2 hours later I was still cutting and measuring, taking photos, making piles on the floor, standing on the tape measure and almost slicing my neck open, getting sidetracked with a pile of fabric perfect for this, that or the other! And then I had to edit the photos and do the listing. I don’t know how people find the time! Of course, I’m pretty sure my fabric supply is dangerously low now, so I’ll probably have to re-stock ๐Ÿ™‚

fabricsYesterday I found a bit of time to go through my box of felt pieces to make things with. I had quite a large piece I’d made with black merino and strips of coloured cotton gauze. The back was blues and greens with silk embellishments. I thought it’d make a nice purse or wallet, with two sections. I’ve almost finished it, I just need to add the button and button hole.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI still had quite a big piece of the felt left, so I cut the pieces out for another one:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe other project I found time for was sewing a notebook cover. I made a piece of nuno felt a while back from a patterned pink, green and blue silk scarf. I had always intended to make a notebook cover out of it but really liked it and didn’t want to cut it up! I think time has made it a little easier though ๐Ÿ™‚

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe texture is really nice:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI had a few ideas for making things with some of the natural white felt pieces I have spare. I started to cut them up, but you’ll have to wait and see what I make from these ๐Ÿ™‚

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHave you had time for making anything lately or is everyone battling the weather, it seems like half of us are under feet of snow. I’m glad it’s cooled off a bit down under though, only about 32C now in Victoria, Kaz has probably got her woolly jumpers out and the fire on ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. I don’t get the moustache thing either! Your fabric packs are brill, so good luck with Etsy.

Beautiful textures on those pieces. The first piece looks like a landscape and has made a pretty purse.
The white could be made into something bridal.

    1. Thanks, Lyn ๐Ÿ™‚
Bridal Ugg type boots maybe, it’s quite thick ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Your fabric packs look very tempting Zed. I always love your purses and notebook covers – great job. I need to make some felt. I have several ideas of what I want to make but still have to finish up the last of my stitch homework. I’m wishing for spring here – still cold.

    1. Thanks, Ruth ๐Ÿ™‚
I really like making the book covers too. The purses are easy to cut out, but quite a lot of work really. We did get blizzards, but it didn’t stick for long here. It’s so cold in the wind though.

  3. I thought it looked like a landscape too. I really must get some of my cotton dyed.
The fabric packs look great. Are you going to make little kits that would work with some of the tutorials?
I always like the white on white stuff.

    1. Thanks, Ann ๐Ÿ™‚
I did think of making kits that would go with the e-book or tutorials, but that might have to be some time in the future. Also the postage prices are so high now, it’s risky buying stuff that won’t be bought.
White on white is always nice, isn’t it? ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. You are down one of the felting packs now – I just purchased it – thanks! Now I don’t have to go trolling around all the thrift shops and fabric stores trying to find bits and pieces of silk. This is great.

    1. Thanks a lot, Jane ๐Ÿ™‚
I hope you like it! And I’d love to see anything you make with it.

  5. Took a class on Etsy last year and decided that it was just not worth all the effort. I would have to spend all day making art small enough to go into the mail. I might as well just become a crafter and do the local craft shows. I did that when I was young, but not interested in doing it now. Hope you get a lot of customers. You have some quality merchandise.

    1. Thanks, Judy. I think if I approach it as I have some things I could sell, then it’ll be manageable, but as a ‘business’ I have to work at stocking, it would be too much.
I think small printed ATCs or ACEOs of your larger work would be very popular, actually, Judy.

  6. Good luck with the store. I may do the same in the future, but not until I can accumulate enough to make it worthwhile. I’ll be interested in hearing your experience and seeing new items in the store. I think the digital items are a great idea. Will you sell your book there as well?

    1. Thanks, Marilyn ๐Ÿ™‚
I think my book is too large to sell there, I think they have a 20 MB limit and it’s over 24 MB. I might consider other tutorials though when the instant download is open to everyone.

    2. Will they let you put a link to where you can buy it? Or at least put something on there that you have one available?

    3. I’ve put a link in my profile. And there’s an ‘About’ section for the shop, I could fill that out and put it in there too. I don’t think there’s anything more prominent, though.

    4. I guess I didn’t notice when I peeked at the store. I was engrossed in the pictures. That’s great that you can include the links.

    5. I don’t think it’s that obvious really, because it’s ‘my’ profile so kind of separate from the shop. Still, it’s better than not having it ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Your fabric packs look scrumptious Zed and I’ve always loved your note book covers and purses, Congrats on the Etsy shop i’m sure you’ll do very well. Haha no jumpers yet but we are wearing more clothes now , 26c today so its definitely getting colder lol

    1. Thanks, Kaz ๐Ÿ™‚
26C is still about 10 degrees too hot for me! ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Don’t be shy about promoting your book. You put a lot of love and time into it and it shows. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thanks a lot, Marilyn ๐Ÿ™‚
I might have to think of something to promote it, there isn’t much interest in it anymore.

We'd love to hear your thoughts!
