Giveaway Winner 3 and New Things

The winner for giveaway number 3 is Donna (comment at 1.33am, November 22, 2014) Congratulations Donna, I’ll email you to find out which set of books you’d like 🙂

Last week I tried a plaid design on a piece of felt. I thought I’d laid the wool out thinly enough to work how I wanted, but it’s not as see through as I’d imagined. It still turned out alright though.

??????????????????????I’ve been wanting a large fold-away felting table for years. Every now and again I start looking again, but I never see one I want which is affordable. Last time I mentioned it, Marilyn said something about a board on a table. I started wondering where I’d get a good one, then realised I was staring at an old door I’d removed years ago. It’s an inside one so it’s flat, and cheap so it’s light. I tried it out on top of a table and it worked! This is it set up for felting in the hall, I’m looking down on it from the stairs:

??????????????????????And this is what I made: A yak scarf just for me, it is so soft and warm, I wore it when I went to the Post Office the other day.

  1. See how inventive we the felters are! Even in the picture your yak scarf looks so soft. It looks really nice.

  2. The plaid felt is wonderful combo of colours – any plans for it?

I got sidetracked, whilst admiring your new door/table in the hallway, by the lovely tiles on your hall floor.
It’s a good arrangement – felting on the floor is not an option for anyone past their teens. And what a lovely scarf you made!

  3. p.s. just realised how handy stairs could be in the photography department (I live in a bungalow) – there are plenty of times when it’s difficult to get the camera high enough to take a shot from above.

    1. Thanks, Lyn 🙂
I just thought the plaid felt would make a nice sideboard or table mat. I never thought of using the stairs for ‘aerial shots’, I usually get a wobbly stool 🙂

  4. Gongrats Donna!

Hah, I love that the answer for a new table has been staring at you all this time… glad you finally got to use that door 🙂

    1. I took that door off 16 years ago, I’ve been wanting a big table at least 5 years. I got there in the end 🙂

    1. Oh, I wouldn’t go so far as no aching back! But no aching or wet knees, but the scarf was worth it 🙂

  5. The scarves are gorgeous. The plaid had to be a challenge to lay out. I’m glad you were able to use the door. Sometimes, we don’t see the things around us. It’s great you thought of it before you invested in a table. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Marilyn 🙂
Once you mentioned a board, I had a look on our local DIY shop’s website at large pieces of wood or particle board, it was wondering how I’d get a piece home that had me staring at the door!

  6. The plaid is wonderful and I’m glad you have a DIY table with your door. That will be really useful for larger pieces of felt. Your yak scarf is lovely too.

    1. Thanks, Ruth 🙂
I need to hunt down my clamps now, it does shift a bit when I’m rubbing, and that’s only a light scarf!

  7. I like the plaid piece and I think it came out nice. I really like the yak scarf too. I like the design of the lighter color in it.

    1. Thanks, Angie 🙂
The lighter parts are yak too, Marilyn sent me some a while ago, which is how I discovered how soft it is.

  8. A win win all round then Zed, well done. Must admit to being distracted by the tiles also. Love the look of your yak scarf, where did you get the fibre from? you have yaks in your part of the world?

    1. Thanks, Jane 🙂
I got the tiles from one of the £1 shops years ago (10 or more), the whole hall probably cost me less than £10. Now that was a lot of work down on my knees! I got my Yak from World of Wool, de-haired yak top, I think (£10 for 100g). I don’t think we have yaks, I’ve seen Bison at a wildlife park in Scotland though 🙂

  9. So glad you found a way to do bigger pieces without having to crawl around on the floor. Isn’t it funny how you can walk by something all the time and not really see it. Both peices look great.

  10. I suspect your Minton tiles are original. We have dark red in the same pattern but they aren’t sadly. Lots of work in that. Great scarf but best of all I love the plaid.

    1. Thanks, Liz 🙂
I had to google ‘Minton tiles’, I wish that’s what I had! These aren’t even Poundland tiles, they’re from a Pound Shop we used to have in Piccadilly, the whole hall must have cost less than £10 🙂
I do like the plaid too.

We'd love to hear your thoughts!
