Dyeing for Class

Dyeing for Class

This weekend and next I am teaching nuno felt scarves. I had to dye silk for bases and wool so there would be a good variety to work with.

For the scarves I used the scrunch method in mason jars. To do this you use fiber reactive dyes. You have to pack you scarf blanks tightly into a container. Next use 2 colours, pouring one then the other over the silk so that it is covered. After 10 min to an hour you pour the sodium carbonate over the whole thing.  Then leave it for at least an hour but really can leave it till tomorrow if you need to. When you rinse you get great mixed patterns. For complete instructions go to Paula Burch’s amazing dye site. http://www.pburch.net/dyeing/lowwaterimmersion.shtml

I also renewed dyed wool supply. I spent 2 days with a large pot dying in 100 gram lots.  this is two thirds. of the wool I split one third off each ball and fluffed them out for the students to use.

There are a couple of colours that are from using up the dye left in the pot after doing a colour. I hope my student like the colours I picked.

Hi Everyone and sorry this is late !!

I’ve been well and truly getting into this mixed media lark now, I’m having so much fun trying new things, being inspired by amazing mixed media artist and well just plain having a go lol

I”ve finished off a few little tags using cardstock, gesso, paints, lots of bits and bobs, sari ribbon and yarn, mechanicals, buttons, coins, papers, silks anything and everything that I can get my hands on !! And waiting for the postman as we speak 🙂

I’ve also made a little teeny sort of a house, I’ve followed a tutorial on Luthiuns blog http://www.alteredalchemy.com/ she makes the most amazing things,  originally made from copper sheet , this one is my practise one using card stock and I even made the little leather  book, the whole thing is only about an inch long and it was so much fun.  I’m now waiting for some copper sheets to arrive so that I can make a real one lol

house  i think i went a bit mad and made some little books,  just in case !

Ive made another foil art journal to and im just trying to keep myself very busy

I know I’ve gone away from felting for a while but I really cant help it, I’m having a great time and learning lots, im going to try to and make some silk paper today to use

Now for some news and I wasn’t sure I was going to say anything but I decided that I would.

I was talked into taking some of my things into our local gallery, I had to sit in with their members and kind of have an interview, ( if I had have know about that I probably wouldn’t have gone,)   having to show what I make and explain how its done was fairly intimidating, but  once I was there I couldn’t back out ( the lady that talked me into it was there waiting for me lol   So once we’d talked through everything   I had to leave so they could discuss me !!!!   and i’d hear from them out in a day or so for the verdict 🙂 .  Well as you know me I thought ok, that’s the end of that 🙂    But to my surprise the president rang and said they’d wanted my things  in there !!!!!!  Im meeting with her again on the 1st of may and taking the  mixed media pieces,  (that’s what they wanted) .  So now I’m quite excited and hopefully I can sell some things in their gallery.  I have to add that was a huge huge huge thing for me to do but Im  glad now and looking forward to seeing what comes of it .

Then I was also offered a fantastic sewing machine as a gift, I haven’t had a chance to collect it yet but I know its an awesome one coming from the lady that owns it.  She has no need for it anymore and she’s more than happy for me to become the new owner, so im excited !

Do you think it was my week, yeahhhhhh    and after the last few weeks we’ve had here it feels good to have some happy positive things happen 🙂

Pink!

Pink!

On my last post I showed you a sneaky peek of the ripples and ruffles of the nuno felted piece I made for Ann’s challenge. Well, here’s the finished piece in full:

pink nuno fullHere it is from another angle:

nuno rufflesIt’s kind of double-nuno because I started with some pieces of cotton gauze that I’d dyed a while ago. I wanted it to be extra sturdy to make a camera case out of it:

pinky gauzeI really liked how it turned out, so I thought I’d make a similar piece. I measured this one carefully to make a book cover out of it. I also added some wisps of orange, beige and white to the merino at each end to match the patterns and colours of the fabric.

nuno notebookYou can see the texture more from this angle:

pink nuno flapsI have just one more piece I made from this fabric, but it is still drying.

Future Felting

Future Felting

Future felting comes from lambs. Here are some of this years lambs outside enjoying the spring sunshine. Most of our lambs were born in the winter so they are not tiny anymore but they are very cute non the less.

I love the face markings on the two above.

Here is the bottle lamb that was born Christmas day, Chrisy. she thought you would like to she her woolly head close up.

This week we had a non fiber animal born. We had a little Dexter calf.

calf and mom calf

Despite appearances she is a little girl.  I had a really hard tome getting any pictures. Her mom is very protective and seem to think having her picture taken is a dangerous thing.

Also hanging out with the sheep is Geoffrey the goose and some chickens with their very fancy rooster.

chickens geofery

Soon it will be shearing time I have plans along with a willing friend to make some coats. I hope to get some usable wool. Right now they get so many burs and so much hay in their wool it really isn’t usable. I would also like to get a few black fleeces that aren’t bleached out by the sun.

That’s a snapshot of what going on in the barn yard this week. I hope you enjoyed the pictures.

Trip to the Garment District in New York City

Trip to the Garment District in New York City

My friend Paula recently visited New York City and made a trip to the Garment District while she was there. I thought you might like to hear about her visit. So here’s Paula…

Lobby of Waldorf-Astoria

I went to New York City with my husband who was on a business trip. We were lucky enough to stay at the historic Waldorf-Astoria. This is the lobby and we were on the 27th floor.

Doorbell at Waldorf-Astoria

My room had a doorbell, go figure. My doorbell at home doesn’t even work.

Another View of NYC

Here’s a view from on of the windows.

View of NYC from Waldorf-Astoria

Here’s a view of Park Avenue from our room. While my husband was in meetings, I explored the city on foot. My main goal was to visit the Garment District for fabric to nuno felt.

Wooden Escalator - Going to Habu Textiles

My first planned stop was Habu Textiles. I took a cab so I wouldn’t get lost but the cabbie didn’t even know where it was. He dropped me off and told me I would have to ask how to get there but it should be in this block. I could tell I was in a garment district because of this really ugly bridal supply store so I went and asked. After giving the woman the address she said “Oh that’s three blocks south.” I walked down three blocks and a very helpful man showed me where the building was. I had to get into a really old elevator to the second floor and then off to take this escalator to the next floor.  The escalator is made out of wood! When I saw the entrance to Habu Textiles, it didn’t even really look like a retail business but I bravely forged ahead.

Habu Textiles

I opened the door to this feast for the eyes. I ended up on my hands and knees looking through all the baskets at all the various yarns and threads.

Habu Textiles

And there was more on the walls. Most of the work that Habu produces is for yarns and knitting. They use all natural fibers such silk, bamboo, hemp, linen and more and blend them together to make wonderful yarn. They use all natural dyes and produce one of a kind fabric.

Habu Textiles

They even combine metals such as bronze and stainless steel into their yarns.

Habu Textiles

I wish I had a better photo of these little squares on the wall. They were 3-4″ squares of fabric that were layered and stitched with sashiko. They were really beautiful.

Bamboo Cloth

This cloth is made from bamboo.

Haul from Habu Textiles

Here’s my entire purchase. It includes the bamboo fabric, silk wrapped cotton, Kasumi (polyester), linen paper, cotton paper, bronze buttons and French safety pins.

Habu Textile - Various Yarns

These are pieces of the yarns that are bundled in the photo above that I bought to use for embellishing felt. I can’t wait to try them out. I spent an hour and a half at Habu and it was time well spent. The next planned stop was B&J Fabrics which was only two blocks away.

B and J Fabrics Bag

Luckily, I found the building right away and could see the fabric in the window five floors up. There weren’t any signs but I went into the building concierge and he directed me to the right place.

B and J Fabrics

There were piles and piles of fabric none of which you could reach. If you wanted to buy something, you had to take a sample to the desk and then they would find the bolt of matching fabric and cut your requested fabric. I was looking for silk chiffon to use in nuno felting and they had wonderful printed chiffon. They had all kinds of “fabric” there including fox, skunk, coyote and even an entire alligator skin. The store is used by designers, design students and Broadway costume design.

Silk Chiffon

I chose about 15 different printed silk fabrics and wanted a half yard of each. It took a long time to choose and I have to avoid those beautiful ones that were $89 per yard.

Silk Chiffon

Once I had chosen, I took the samples up to the desk and then I waited on the couch for an hour. I had asked only for silk chiffon although some of the print samples were on silk charmeuse.

Silk Chiffon

When the woman brought out my pieces, I noticed that not all of them were chiffon and that she had cut some in charmeuse. The manager was very nice about it and went to see if he could find the same patterns in chiffon. After another hour, I finally had my purchases.

Silk Chiffon

I spent over 5 hours at B&J Fabrics.

Silk Chiffon

My husband even called to find out where I was and came and found me.

Silk Chiffon

I had plans to go to more fabric stores and a yarn store but never made it out of B&J. That was day one. The second day I went to Purl Soho which is a knitting store and spent all day there. I was so exhausted after those two days that I never made it back to the garment district. If you decide to go, make sure that you have good directions and your walking shoes.

Coppery Bronze Felt

Coppery Bronze Felt

I hadn’t handmade any new felt for a few months until this week. I knew I’d have a spare couple of days for doing layouts and felting, so I went through my supplies and got a few things together. I wanted to make a texturey piece in coppers bronzes and metallic tones, so I chose some commercial art yarns, ribbon, silk tops and silk throwster’s waste in those shades:

metallic suppliesI also looked through my organza and found a few different gold shades:

organzaI mainly used a shade of Merino from World of Wool called ‘Rust’, but used a few other shades and blends aswell so it wasn’t too ‘flat’. I really like the way it turned out.

metallic feltI can’t resist a couple of Supermacro close ups of the texture 🙂

textureThis is one of the organza pieces.

organza textureAnother piece I felted yesterday was a nuno felted piece for Ann’s challenge. I found a quite gaudy vintage pink synthetic headscarf in my supplies and thought I’d make a piece using that. The weather was great yesterday: storm clouds, lightning, thunder, hailstone, but it kept going too dark to take good photos so here’s a sneaky peek at some close ups and I’ll post the whole piece soon. Prefelt

Prefelt

There are two kinds of prefelt. One is needled prefelt. Commercial prefelt is done this way. It is needled just enough to hold together.  I use this sometimes, it works very well. I get it in small pieces and by the yard from Dreamspin Fibers. http://www.dreamspinfibres.ca/  (shameless plug for a friend).

The second is wet felted and this is easy to make yourself. Lately that is what I have been doing. You layout your felt as usual but you stop when it is just holding together.  Rinse it out carefully and let it dry. it is till fragile but strong enough to cut out shapes when you don’t want the fuzzy edges that traditional layout gives you.   I have been making  small pieces and some from the ends of some batts that are not big enough to do much with. They are very helpful when you want very definite shapes.

prefelt on table

I don’t have any exact plans for them but they are very handy to have around.

A Fiber Nest

A Fiber Nest

I was planning on posting about my friend Paula’s recent trip to New York City and her visit to several cool fabric shops. But Paula got distracted and didn’t get the photos sent to me. Instead, she sent me photos of a fiber nest that she created. If you’re on the forum, you might know Paula as ‘sula’smom’. Sula is her dog and after a storm, Sula was really interested in something in the yard. Sula’s dad went to check out what was going on and found this:

squirrel 001So he brought it into the house and Paula went into rescue mode.

squirrel 002

Baby squirrel was really cold and barely breathing so Paula got him warmed up.

squirrel 007And put him into a nest of fiber. I do know squirrels really like wool because I had one steal my entire bunch of wool I put out for the birds to use for nests.

squirrel 005Isn’t he the cutest little thing?

squirrel 029He started perking up a bit after he got warmed up and got over the shock of falling from his home.

I hope Paula has all her shots up to date 🙂

dinner 002And now it’s dinner time. I don’t usually post things that aren’t really fiber related but there is the “fiber nest” after all and he was just too darn cute. Yes, I know that you shouldn’t keep wild animals. I’ll let you know the outcome.

Paula sent me more photos as she was trying to get on the forum and couldn’t find her password. So Rocket J or Rocky for short, was helping her.

ForumsquirrelHere’s Rocky trying to help Paula.

Oh no! What’s that? Animal fibers? What are you doing with animal fibers?

Rocky got spooked by seeing that category animal fibers and had to retreat to the pocket of safety on Paula’s shirt. Time for a little nap.

Not more Journals :)

Not more Journals :)

Hi Everyone

I think I’ve gone a bit mad on these journal covers and I just wanted to show you the new ones ive made,  I finished off my friend Mary’s Dream Time Journal and passed it over to her, she loves it and looking forward to using it.

Ingredients used lol  are foil, foam, sand paper, mesh, cellophane, paint, bitumen and spirits oh and of course a key

The next one’s are smaller ones but using the same principles with added beads and tiny rocks

journey

I love the effect in the top right hand corner on this one, its were i added in the cellophane and it went nice and crinkly

This last one has corregated cardboard, buttons, steel wool , egg shells, paint, bitumen and spirits and I took this one back a bit more to expose some of the foil underneath,

journal

Ive just given this one a dose of bitumen and i love the effect of the orange cellophane underneath,  once its dry it should be interesting to take off , i think if you click on the pic for a closer look you’ll see what i mean !

love

Im not sure what i’m going to do with all of them yet and thinking i might just have to have a give away shortly 🙂

I have a couple more going to but haven’t had much time to myself lately and I should have had this post up last week but unfortunately Hubby landed in hospital with pneumonia so everything got waylaid for a while,  He’s home and resting nicely now, or should I say getting spoilt lol   Have to be careful he doesn’t get to used to that lol

Happy Creating 🙂

Synthetic Fibres and Fabrics

Synthetic Fibres and Fabrics

A couple of felt pieces I chose to make into things for etsy recently were both made using nylon fibres. This first piece has crimped nylon fibre which I dyed myself, blended with merino tops. The felt had a really nice feel to it, thick and kind of spongy but still light, and the nylon gave it a nice texture and sheen, a kind of wet look.

Nylon rainbowoIt was the perfect length for making into a notebook cover, and I got to keep the natural edges again too.

notebook coverI decided to use the orangey yellow side as the front cover:

OrangeThe other piece was one I made a while ago with trilobal nylon. It comes as rainbow tops and I carefully separated out some of the colours and blended them with merino. The result was hard to capture on camera but it gives a nice texture and shine to it, and when the light catches it, it really sparkles. The piece was big enough to make two camera or gadget cases out of. I’m just finishing a slightly larger one than this, but this is the first one I made:

stripey nylonI hadn’t realised how small my new camera was until I used some props for demonstrating the size of the cases, apparently mine is about the size of a pack of cards, it makes the new iPods look huge 🙂 I used a standard sized camera to test the ‘fit’ here:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI was really pleased with the way the flowery camera cases came out. These were made from a piece of nuno felt I made with a polyester scarf on the top and muslin underneath.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnd because I keep moving all my sewing stuff from upstairs to downstairs and back in a shoe box, I thought I’d make myself a little case to keep my glasses safe. It was made from a piece of felt I made ‘just for fun’ last year and has as many different fabrics and embellishment fibres on there as I could find room for!
